The forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon contains a wealth of information on nucleon structure, relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. We report on a complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of low-energy VVCS in chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT). Here we focus on the unpolarized VVCS amplitudes $T_1(\nu, Q^2)$ and $T_2(\nu, Q^2)$, and the corresponding structure functions $F_1(x, Q^2)$ and $F_2(x,Q^2)$. We examine the polarized doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon using chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT). The polarized VVCS contains a wealth of information on the spin structure of the nucleon which is relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. FluorMODleaf: A new leaf fluorescence emission model based on the PROSPECT model

International audience; A new model of chlorophyll a fluorescence emission by plant leaves, FluorMODleaf, is presented. It is an extension of PROSPECT, a widely used leaf optical properties model that regards the leaf as a pile of N absorbing and diffusing elementary plates. In FluorMODleaf, fluorescence emission of an infinitesimal layer of thickness dx is integrated over the entire elementary plate. The fluorescence source function is based on the excitation spectrum of diluted isolated thylakoids and on the emission spectra of isolated photosystems, PSI and PSII, which are the main pigment–protein complexes involved in the initial stages of photosynthesis. Dynamics-function correlations are usually inferred when molecular mobility and protein function are simultaneously impaired at characteristic temperatures or hydration levels. In this sense, excitation energy transfer in the photosynthetic light-harvesting complex II (LHC II) is an untypical example because it remains fully functional even at cryogenic temperatures relying mainly on interactions of electronic states with protein vibrations. Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering in a lysozyme–water mixture: An unusual behavior around 343K

Abstract This article describes Rayleigh and Brillouin light scattering studies on a lysozyme–water mixture from 293 K to 355 K. The scattering intensities from this system are compared with those from a sodium acetate buffer used to dissolve the lysozyme. It is found that in the vicinity of 343 K the lysozyme–water mixture becomes opalescent, and the intensity of the Brillouin peaks decreases and almost vanishes, to be restored at temperatures above 343 K. Around the same temperature the intensity of the central, unshifted Rayleigh peak, however, increases strongly. No such behavior was observed for the sodium acetate buffer. Thermomagnetic Properties Improved by Self-Organized Flower-Like Phase Separation of Ferromagnetic Co2Dy0.5Mn0.5Sn

A thermodynamically stable phase separation of Co2Dy0.5Mn0.5Sn into the Heusler compound Co2MnSn and Co8Dy3Sn4 is induced by rapid cooling from the liquid phase. The phase separation forms an ordered flower-like structure on the microscale. The increased scattering of phonons at the phase boundaries reduces the thermal conductivity and thus improves thermoelectric and spincaloric properties.

Role of the co-surfactant nature in soybean w/o microemulsions.

Abstract The influence of the co-surfactant on physicochemical properties of w/o soybean oil microemulsions (MEs) has been studied. In spite of the similarity in phase diagrams, the MEs display remarkable differences when examined by electrical conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and linear voltammetry. When different short-chain alcohols were employed as co-surfactants, together with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant, the DLS results indicated the systems to be monodisperse.
