“SmartGlass” Obstacles for Dynamic Inducing of Light Scattering in Vision Research Experiments
2017
We describe a technique that allows control of visual stimuli quality through the use of a setup with a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film positioned in the optical pathway of one or both human eyes. Nowadays, PDLC films allow alteration of the resolution and contrast limits of the transmitted light due to continuous change in the light scattering that is obtained by the application of an AC electrical field. In our experimental setup, the use of a wide-aperture up to area of 20 x 15 cm2 PDLC sheet is combined with a flat-screen PC display or with a modified display emission block without its interference filter unit and with an installed individually controllable colored light-em…
Theoretical estimates of supernova-neutrino cross sections for the stable even-even lead isotopes: Charged-current reactions
2016
A detailed study of the charged-current supernova electron neutrino and electron antineutrino scattering off the stable even-mass lead isotopes A = 204, 206, and 208 is reported in this work. The proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) is adopted to construct the nuclear final and initial states. Three different Skyrme interactions are tested for their isospin and spin-isospin properties and then applied to produce (anti)neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections for (anti)neutrino energies below 80 MeV. Realistic estimates of the nuclear responses to supernova (anti)neutrinos are computed by folding the computed cross sections with a two-parameter Fermi-Dirac distr…
Theoretical study of supernova neutrino and antineutrino scattering off the stable cadmium and lead isotopes
2017
In this thesis work, an extensive study of neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleus interactions is performed. The work is focused on supernova-neutrino scattering off the stable cadmium and lead isotopes. The studied nuclei are of interest for the investigations of neutrino-properties and for neutrino-detection experiments. The adopted nuclear-structure models are based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) and the microscopic quasiparticle- phonon model (MQPM) and the cross-sections calculations are based on the Donnelly-Walecka formalism. The computed cross sections are folded with a two-parameter Fermi-Dirac distribution to obtain realistic estimates of the nuclear responses …
Spectroscopic and Structural Investigation of the Confinement of D and L Dimethyl Tartrate in Lecithin Reverse Micelles
2009
The confinement of D and L dimethyl tartrate in lecithin reverse micelles dispersed in cyclohexane has been investigated by FT-IR, polarimetry, electronic and vibrational circular dichroism (ECD and VCD), 1H NMR, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Measurements have been performed at room temperature as a function of the solubilizate-to-surfactant molar ratio (R) at fixed lecithin concentration. The analysis of experimental data indicates that the dimethyl tartrate molecules are solubilized within reverse micelles in proximity to the surfactant head groups in the same way for the D and L forms. The encapsulation of dimethyl tatrate within lecithin reverse micelles involves changes in i…
Seasonal Modulation of the $^7$Be Solar Neutrino Rate in Borexino
2017
We detected the seasonal modulation of the $^7$Be neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The period, amplitude, and phase of the observed time evolution of the signal are consistent with its solar origin, and the absence of an annual modulation is rejected at 99.99\% C.L. The data are analyzed using three methods: the sinusoidal fit, the Lomb-Scargle and the Empirical Mode Decomposition techniques, which all yield results in excellent agreement.
Dynamics of supercooled confined water measured by deep inelastic neutron scattering
2017
In this paper, we present the results of deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS) measurements on supercooled water confined within the pores (average pore diameter ~ 20 Ã ) of a disordered hydrophilic silica matrix obtained through hydrolysis and polycondensation of the alkoxide precursor Tetra-Methyl-Ortho-Silicate via the sol-gel method. Experiments were performed at two temperatures (250 K and 210 K, i.e., before and after the putative liquidâliquid transition of supercooled confined water) on a âwetâ sample with hydration h ~ 40% w/w, which is high enough to have water-filled pores but low enough to avoid water crystallization. A virtually âdryâ sample at h ~ 7% was also inve…
Experimental evidence for a liquid-liquid crossover in deeply cooled confined water.
2014
International audience; In this work we investigate, by means of elastic neutron scattering, the pressure dependence of mean square displacements (MSD) of hydrogen atoms of deeply cooled water confined in the pores of a three-dimensional disordered SiO 2 xerogel; experiments have been performed at 250 and 210 K from atmospheric pressure to 1200 bar. The " pressure anomaly " of supercooled water (i.e., a mean square displacement increase with increasing pressure) is observed in our sample at both temperatures; however, contrary to previous simulation results and to the experimental trend observed in bulk water, the pressure effect is smaller at lower (210 K) than at higher (250 K) temperatur…
The boson peak of deeply cooled confined water reveals the existence of a low-temperature liquid-liquid crossover.
2014
International audience; The Boson peak of deeply cooled water confined in the pores of a silica xerogel is studied by inelastic neutron scattering at different hydration levels to separate the contributions from matrix, water on the pore surfaces and "internal" water. Our results reveal that at high hydration level, where the contribution from internal water is dominant, the temperature dependence of the Boson peak intensity shows an inflection point at about 225 K. The complementary use of differential scanning calorimetry to describe the thermodynamics of the system allows identifying the inflection point as the signature of a water liquid-liquid crossover.
Rosenbluth separation of the $\pi^0$ Electroproduction Cross Section off the Neutron
2017
We report the first longitudinal/transverse separation of the deeply virtual exclusive $\pi^0$ electroproduction cross section off the neutron and coherent deuteron. The corresponding four structure functions $d\sigma_L/dt$, $d\sigma_T/dt$, $d\sigma_{LT}/dt$ and $d\sigma_{TT}/dt$ are extracted as a function of the momentum transfer to the recoil system at $Q^2$=1.75 GeV$^2$ and $x_B$=0.36. The $ed \to ed\pi^0$ cross sections are found compatible with the small values expected from theoretical models. The $en \to en\pi^0$ cross sections show a dominance from the response to transversely polarized photons, and are in good agreement with calculations based on the transversity GPDs of the nucle…
On the mathematical properties of multi-loop scattering amplitudes through the loop-tree duality
2023
