Relaxation phenomena in mixed isomeric alcohols by Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering

1991

Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering data in mixed isomeric alcohols n-pentanol (nPe-OH) and 2-methyl-2-butanol (2Me-2BuOH) are presented. The hypersonic velocity and normalized absorption are measured as a function of the scattering angle, in the temperature range from - 15-degrees-C to + 45-degrees-C, and as a function of n-PeOH molar fraction going from the pure n-PeOH to the pure 2Me-2BuOH. The experimental results confirm the existence of a shear relaxation phenomenon in the GHz region, that has been previously detected in pure liquids. The temperature dependence of the relaxation time tau-s and of the shear modulus G-infinity evaluated within viscoelastic liquid models, support the existen…

Structural investigation of the confinement of finite amounts of trehalose in water-containing sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate reversed micell…

2006

The structural effect of trehalose confined in water-containing sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reversed micelles at water to AOT molar ratio W = 5 and 10 as a function of the trehalose to AOT molar ratio T (0 < T < 0.1) has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS data analysis is consistent with the hypothesis that trehalose is encapsulated within the quite spherical hydrophilic micellar cores of water-containing reversed micelles, causing an increase of the aggregate size and a decrease of the polydispersion. Moreover, SANS results suggest that the trehalose confinement in water-containing reversed micelles involves marked changes on the molecular pac…

Time propagation of the Kadanoff–Baym equations for inhomogeneous systems

2009

We have developed a time propagation scheme for the Kadanoff-Baym equations for general inhomogeneous systems. These equations describe the time evolution of the nonequilibrium Green function for interacting many-body systems in the presence of time-dependent external fields. The external fields are treated nonperturbatively whereas the many-body interactions are incorporated perturbatively using Phi-derivable self-energy approximations that guarantee the satisfaction of the macroscopic conservation laws of the system. These approximations are discussed in detail for the time-dependent Hartree-Fock, the second Born and the GW approximation.

Incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering in isomeric alcohols

1992

Abstract Incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering (IQENS) data on liquid isomeric alcohols normal-pentanol (n-PeOH) and 2-methyl-2-butanol (2M-2BuOH) and on their mixture are presented. The diffusive motion of protons, as a function of temperature, is analyzed in the framework of the random jump diffusion model. The temperature dependence of the parameters obtained confirms the more “fragile” behaviour of the more sterically hindered 2M-2BuOH with respect to that of the linear n-PeOH.

Orthogonality Catastrophe and Decoherence in a Trapped-Fermion Environment

2012

The Fermi edge singularity and the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe describe the universal physics which occurs when a Fermi sea is locally quenched by the sudden switching of a scattering potential, leading to a brutal disturbance of its ground state. We demonstrate that the effect can be seen in the controllable domain of ultracold trapped gases by providing an analytic description of the out-of-equilibrium response to an atomic impurity, both at zero and at finite temperature. Furthermore, we link the transient behavior of the gas to the decoherence of the impurity, and, in particular to the amount of non-markovianity of its dynamics.
