Addressing health literacy in schools in the WHO European Region

2019

Health literacy is a key determinant of health (1). Several studies have reported a positive association between high levels of health literacy and better health outcomes in children (2-4). For example, the WHO collaborative Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey found that health literacy is one of the main factors contributing to health differences and is associated with educational outcomes such as academic achievement and post-school aspirations (4). Health literacy is a useful phenomenon in the understanding and reduction of avoidable health disparities because it can be learned and developed (4–6). However, children’s health literacy should not merely be seen as a risk…

Health literacy as a learning outcome in schools

2012

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to define health literacy as a learning outcome in schools, and to describe the learning conditions that are relevant for targeting health literacy.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on theoretical and empirical educational literature, and also the experiences of the authors.FindingsHealth literacy is defined as consisting of five core components: theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge, critical thinking, self‐awareness, and citizenship. The first three components are rather similar to the commonly‐accepted health literacy concept, but the definition given in this paper expands the concept via two additional – but essential – components. It is emp…

Active commuting to school among 36,781 Spanish children and adolescents: A temporal trend study.

2021

This study examines trends in the rates of active commuting to school (ACS) in Spanish children (n = 18 343; 8.93 ± 1.68) and adolescents (n = 18 438; 14.11 ± 1.58) aged 6‐18 years from 2010 to 2017. Given the study period included the economic crisis in Spain (2008‐2013), the second aim of this study was to compare ACS rates during and after the economic crisis. Data were obtained from 28 studies conducted across Spain. The overall trends in ACS were evaluated using multilevel logistic regression analysis. Among Spanish children and adolescents, the rates of ACS to school ranged around 60% between 2010 and 2017. The rates of ACS in Spanish youth did not change significantly during the 2010…

Trends in perceived school stress among adolescentsin five Nordic countries 2002–2014

2019

Abstract Associations between school-related stress and poor health, risk behaviours and low well-being are well documented. The aim of this paper was to estimate trends of perceived school stress experienced by boys and girls of different ages in the Nordic countries, and to describe trends in school stress between the Nordic countries. Nordic data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC) between 2002 and 2014 were used. The participants were aged 11–16 years. School stress was measured by a single item; “How pressured do you feel by schoolwork?” The participants answering “some” or “a lot” were categorised as reporting school stress.   Sweden, Norway and Denmark had …

From investing to saving in education : principals and educational savings

2017

In autumn 2015, it was announced that the government would execute massive budget cuts to education. This was due to the efforts of the new government to save money and balance the state economics. The amount of money that the state intended to save from the basic education, also known as primary and lower secondary schools nationwide was estimated to be around 40 million euros. 30 million euros out 40 million euro savings was from group size money and 10 million of development money. Money directed to group sizes has been used by the schools to downsize the class and group sizes. The developing money on the other hand is for the development of the schools, for example to modernize equipmen…

"The English language and my world" : analysis of the new National core curriculum for upper secondary schools 2015 from EFL teaching perspective

2017

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan syksyllä 2016 voimaan tulleen lukion opetussuunnitelman perusteiden(LOPS 2015) eroja verrattuna edelliseen lukion opetussuunnitelman perusteisiin (LOPS 2003). Erojen mahdollisia vaikutuksia englanti vieraana kielenä -opetukseen (EFL) pohditaan. Aihetta lähestytään kyselymuotoisen tapaustutkimuksen avulla, jossa on haastateltu kokenutta lukion englannin opettajaa. Kyselyllä on selvitetty, miten uusi opetussuunnitelma vaikuttaa englannin opetukseen. Analyysissä selvisi, että englanti on uudessa opetussuunnitelmassa omana osanaan, erotettuna muista vieraista kielistä, toisin kuin vanhassa opetussuunnitelmassa. Tästä johtuen englannin kielen opetustavoitteet, kurssite…

2022

ObjectivesIn Italy, in 2013, a new school curriculum with a sport character was established in high schools, called Sports High School (SHS). The aims of this study were: (1) to assess the fitness levels of SHS students who, respecting all the safety rules to limit the spread of COVID-19, practiced physical education (PE) at school with continuity for almost all of 2021, and to compare them with Traditional High School (THS) students; (2) to evaluate as the SHS may have influenced the fitness levels in adolescents.MethodsThis is a case-control study in which thirty participants were enrolled (SHS: n = 15; THS: n = 15). Koti, koulu ja kasvatus – kohtaamisia ja rajankäyntejä

2004

Tutkimus on osa dosentti Tuul…
