Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating neurologic condition with tremendous socioeconomic impact on affected individuals and the health care system. The treatment of SCI principally includes surgical treatment and marginal pharmacologic and rehabilitation therapies targeting secondary events with minor clinical improvements. This unsuccessful result mainly reflects the complexity of SCI pathophysiology and the diverse biochemical and physiologic changes that occur in the injured spinal cord. Engineered axon tracts within tubular biohybrid scaffolds

[EN] Injuries to the nervous system that involve the disruption of axonal pathways are devastating to the individual and require specific tissue engineering strategies. Here we analyse a cells-biomaterials strategy to overcome the obstacles limiting axon regeneration in vivo, based on the combination of a hyaluronic acid (HA) single-channel tubular conduit filled with poly-L-lactide acid (PLA) fibres in its lumen, with pre-cultured Schwann cells (SCs) as cells supportive of axon extension. Profilin 1 is required for peripheral nervous system myelination

Myelination allows rapid saltatory propagation of action potentials along the axon and is an essential prerequisite for the normal functioning of the nervous system. During peripheral nervous system (PNS) development, myelin-forming Schwann cells (SCs) generate radial lamellipodia to sort and ensheath axons. This process requires controlled cytoskeletal remodeling, and we show that SC lamellipodia formation depends on the function of profilin 1 (Pfn1), an actin-binding protein involved in microfilament polymerization. Schwannoma or neurilemmoma is an infrequent benign tumor in the oral cavity that originates from the Schwann cells on the neural sheath of the peripheral nerves. Schwannomas are frequently located in the soft tissues of head and neck region, but only a 1 to 12% of them are located in the oral cavity. Some histological variants of schwannoma have been described including the cellular, plexiform, epithelioid, ancient, and melanocytic types. Late-Onset Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy: Unusual Ultrastructural Pathology and Subtotal β-Galactocerebrosidase Deficiency

An 11-year-old girl was found to have severely reduced β-galactocerebrosidase activity as evidence of late-onset globoid cell leukodystrophy, while her mother had almost normal enzyme activity in circulating white blood cells. Clinically, the patient showed a remitting course marked by seizures, ataxia, white-matter disease on computed tomographic scan, and reduced conduction velocities of peripheral nerves. Symptoms improved somewhat around the age of 10 years. Two sural nerve biopsies, performed 6 years apart, disclosed a demyelinating neuropathy. Ultrastructural pathology of dermal axons and Schwann cells in lysosomal diseases

THe role of autologous nerve fragments implantation in enhancing peripheral nerve regeneration

ntroduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of seeding a nerve suture with autologous nerve fragments. Our hypothesis is that the fragments could improve axonal regeneration.
