In Search for an Integrated Design Basis for Audio and Haptics
2008
Audio and haptics as interaction modalities share properties, which make them highly appropriate to be handled within a single conceptual framework. This paper outlines such framework, gaining ingredients from the literature concerning cross-modal integration and embodied cognition. The resulting framework is bound up with a concept of physical embodiment, which has been introduced within several scientific disciplines to reveal the role of bodily experience and the corresponding mental imagery as the core of meaning-creation. In addition to theoretical discussion, the contribution of the proposed approach in design is outlined.
A View from the Inside: The Dawning Of De-Westernization of CEE Media and Communication Research?
2015
The Editorial outlines some characteristics of the development of the Central and Eastern European (CEE) media and communication scholarship during the past 25 years. In the majority of CEE countries, the media and communication research was re-established after the collapse of communism. Since then, a critical mass of active scholars has appeared who form an integral part of the larger European academia. A gradual integration of East and West perspectives in media and communication research is taking place along with moving away from the barely West-centred approach, and utilizing the research done by CEE scholars. Certain 'de-westernization' and internationalization of the research in ter…
Metal complexes of oxadiazole ligands: An overview
2019
Oxadizoles are heterocyclic ring systems that find application in different scientific disciplines, from medicinal chemistry to optoelectronics. Coordination with metals (especially the transition ones) proved to enhance the intrinsic characteristics of these organic ligands and many metal complexes of oxadiazoles showed attractive characteristics for different research fields. In this review, we provide a general overview on different metal complexes and polymers containing oxadiazole moieties, reporting the principal synthetic approaches adopted for their preparation and showing the variety of applications they found in the last 40 years.
Publishing studies
2015
In some parts of the world, Publishing Studies are a fairly well-established field of research as well as of higher education. Not least since this is not so much the case in continental Europe, the Publishing Studies community increasingly sees a more elaborated self-concept as an important prerequisite for a prosperous further development of the field in research as well as in teaching. This paper starts off by relating the question for an advanced self-concept of Publishing Studies to the question what criteria have to be fulfilled to call a field (like Publishing Studies) a scholarly discipline. As the second source for the possible formation of a more elaborate self-concept, the paper …
Mathematical skills in undergraduate students. A ten-year survey of a Plant Physiology course
2012
In the health and life sciences, as well as in other scientific disciplines, problem solving depends on mathematical skills. However, significant deficiencies are commonly found in this regard in undergraduate students. In an attempt to understand the underlying causes and to improve students' performance, this paper reports a ten-year survey (2000-2010) on mathematical skills of undergraduate Spanish students enrolled in a Plant Physiology course, based on data from tests performed throughout this time period. The results show that the percentage of correct answers decreases for questions requiring some mathematical skills, particularly those needing some calculations. Interestingly, perce…
Una revolución científica a la que Educación Química quiere contribuir
2014
AbstractSustainability Science aims to integrate the study of social development and natural processes to fa a new paradigm thatvour both of them and make possible the transition to Sustainability. This deep scientific revolution cannot be the result of just a new knowledge discipline: it must become a new paradigm that impregnates the ensemble of scientific disciplines and social activities.
Attuning to a changing ocean
2020
The ocean is a lifeline for human existence, but current practices risk severely undermining ocean sustainability. Present and future social−ecological challenges necessitate the maintenance and development of knowledge and action by stimulating collaboration among scientists and between science, policy, and practice. Here we explore not only how such collaborations have developed in the Nordic countries and adjacent seas but also how knowledge from these regions contributes to an understanding of how to obtain a sustainable ocean. Our collective experience may be summarized in three points: 1) In the absence of long-term observations, decision-making is subject to high risk arising from na…
ABOUT THE IDENTITY AND OBJECTIVES OF TOURIST LAW
2019
This paper undertakes the considerations on the issues of the identity of law in tourism. Law in tourism is one of many disciplines that has a complex and comprehensive character. As in the financial law or the public procurement law, in the tourist law simple dichotomous divisions into private law, public law does not bring the expected results. In such cases, the justifications for distin-guishing the law in tourism and seeking criteria for independence and identity lie outside the disciplinary divisions. In case of law in tourism, the reference to the methodological criteria for justifyingits distinctiveness seems less convincing. One of the possible ways to demonstrate the distinctivene…
La economía social como enfoque metodológico, como objeto de estudio y como disciplina científica
1999
This article continues an article written by the same author and published by CIRIEC-España in 1997 (no. 25). It analyses social economy at three cognitive levels: first, as a social reality (Social Economy); second, as a scientific discipline which studies its previous reality (the science of Social Economy); third, as a methodological approach in social sciences (the approach of Social Economy). The author claims that, at these three levels, social economy becomes an alternative way of “making the economy”.
Reframing Teacher Education: Towards the Integration of Phenomenon-Based Curriculum Reform and Organizational Culture
2021
In this article, we report a case study of our experiences of a curriculum reform process based on the principles of phenomenon-based learning in higher education in the context of Finnish teacher education. We explore how democracy and participation were present in the decision making process, highlighting the challenges of promoting the phenomenon-based approach and collaboration. First, we describe the reform’s rationale, then the theoretical framework, methodology and the reform process. Next, we reflect on our experiences through documen tary and interview data. The change process included representative and participative democ racy approaches as well as an aristocratic approach. An in…
