Problems of electron detection in Depth-Selective Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Applications of Depth-Selective Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy (DCEMS) are limited by the long measuring times needed for collecting sufficient data statistics. To shorten the recording time, the background should be reduced and the detection efficiency for conversion electrons should be improved. For57Co/57Fe DCEMS, systematic studies were performed to investigate the origin, shape, and structure of the background components in DCEMS data distributions for various samples using channeltrons and low-noise scintillation counters as electron detectors.

Effects of scintillation light collection on the time resolution of a time-of-flight detector for annihilation quanta

Monte Carlo methods were used to simulate the production and collection of scintillation light in a BaF/sub 2/ crystal. The calculated results were compared to measured values for detectors with different heights. Based on this simulation, a TOF (time-of-flight) detector consisting of two conical BaF/sub 2/ crystals (base radius 18 mm, top radius 15 mm, height 25 mm) was assembled. The total time resolution of this system was (210+or-5) ps FWHM (full width at half maximum) for 511-keV annihilation quanta and was found to be independent of the source position between the detectors. Liquid-scintillation detection of preseparated 257Rf with the SISAK-system

Abstract The fast liquid–liquid extraction system SISAK with continuous liquid scintillation detection was coupled to the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator to enable studies of the chemical properties of α -decaying transactinide elements. The preseparated transactinide 257Rf (4.7 s), was transported via a He/KCl-jet directly into the scintillation solution. This permitted the first unambiguous detection of transactinide atoms by the means of the α -liquid scintillation detectors of the SISAK-system. During the experiment, 89 257Rf atoms were observed. Inverted-conical light guide for crosstalk reduction in tightly-packed scintillator matrix and MAPMT assembly

Abstract In this paper we present the Inverted-Conical light guide designed for optical crosstalk reduction in the scintillator-MAPMT assemblies. The research was motivated by the 30% crosstalk observed in UFFO X-ray telescope , UBAT, during the preliminary calibration with MAPMTs of 64 2.88 × 2.88 mm2 pixels and identically gridded YSO crystal matrices. We began the study with the energy and crosstalk calibrations of the detector, then we constructed a GEANT4 simulation with the customized metallic film model as the MAPMT photocathode . Quantitative Determination of Renal 99mTc-MAG3 Clearance. A Comparison of Results Acquired Simultaneously in Whole Body Geometry and with a Gamma Cam…

289 patients were simultaneously investigated with a partially shielded whole body counter (Oberhausen) and in camera technique to correlate the values of the MAG3-clearance. Good correlation was found for the often used times schedules of taking blood samples. Late blood samples increase high clearance values in both methods slighly. The shape of the ROI has no influence using camera technique. We conclude, that camera technique can replace the Oberhausen method with a partially shielded whole body counter.

Proof-of-principle measurements with a liquid-scintillator detector using wavelength-shifting optical modules

Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.

Angular resolution of an array of tracking-chamber detectors for use in high-energy gamma-ray astronomy

We describe a method of analysis for the reconstruction of the arrival direction of a high-energy photon impacting on the top of the atmosphere by using the directions of the particles on the shower front as measured by a ground-based array of tracking chambers uniformly distributed on a square surface; as an example, an array with enclosed surface of (120×120) m2 has been considered. Estimates on the accuracy of reconstruction are given, after application of the method to computer-simulated shower directions as a function of the number of «smapling» detectors and of their accuracy in the measurement of the «local» shower direction.

The optical instrumentation of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter

The purpose of this Note is to describe the optical assembly procedure called here Optical Instrumentation and the quality tests conducted on the assembled units. Altogether, 65 Barrel (or LB) modules were constructed - including one spare - together with 129 Extended Barrel (EB) modules (including one spare). The LB modules were mechanically assembled at JINR (Dubna, Russia) and transported to CERN, where the optical instrumentation was performed with personnel contributed by several Institutes.
