2020
Post-fit BDT distributions after the VBF event selection for the $\tau_{\mathrm{lep}}\tau_{\mathrm{lep}}$ DF analysis channel. The VBF signal is shown for $\mu = 0.73$ and $\tilde d = -0.01$. ''Other bkg'' denotes all background contributions not listed explicitly in the legend. The size of the combined statistical, experimental, and theoretical uncertainties is given.

Post-fit BDT distributions after the VBF event selection for the $\tau_{\mathrm{lep}}\tau_{\mathrm{lep}}$ SF analysis channel. The VBF signal is shown for $\mu = 0.73$ and $\tilde d = -0.01$. ''Other bkg'' denotes all background contributions not listed explicitly in the legend. The size of the combined statistical, experimental, and theoretical uncertainties is given. The exact value of the $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ cut on the leptons depends on the trigger.

Coronary artery calcium score on low-dose computed tomography for lung cancer screening
2013
Aim: To evaluate the feasibility of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) on low-dose non-gated chest CT (ngCCT). Methods: Sixty consecutive individuals (30 males; 73 ± 7 years) scheduled for risk stratification by means of unenhanced ECG-triggered cardiac computed tomography (gCCT) underwent additional unenhanced ngCCT. All CT scans were performed on a 64-slice CT scanner (Somatom Sensation 64 Cardiac, Siemens, Germany). CACS was calculated using conventional methods/scores (Volume, Mass, Agatston) as previously described in literature. The CACS value obtained were compared. The Mayo Clinic classification was used to stratify cardiovascular risk based on Agatston CACS. Differences and corre…
Validating Test Score Interpretations by Cross-National Comparison
2015
Cross-national assessment of students’ competences in higher education is becoming increasingly important in many disciplines including economics but there are few available instruments that meet psychological standards for assessing students’ economic competence in higher education (HE). One of them is the internationally valid Test of Understanding in College Economics (TUCE), which has been adapted and employed successfully in HE systems in various countries, but the test results have seldom been used for international comparisons of students’ Economic Content Knowledge (ECK). Here, we compare the German and the Japanese test adaptations of the TUCE with reference to the American origin…
Sepsis at ICU admission does not decrease 30-day survival in very old patients : a post-hoc analysis of the VIP1 multinational cohort study
2020
AbstractBackgroundThe number of intensive care patients aged ≥ 80 years (Very old Intensive Care Patients; VIPs) is growing. VIPs have high mortality and morbidity and the benefits of ICU admission are frequently questioned. Sepsis incidence has risen in recent years and identification of outcomes is of considerable public importance. We aimed to determine whether VIPs admitted for sepsis had different outcomes than those admitted for other acute reasons and identify potential prognostic factors for 30-day survival.ResultsThis prospective study included VIPs with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores ≥ 2 acutely admitted to 307 ICUs in 21 European countries. Of 3869 acutely admi…
Structure and function of the vacuolar Ccc1/VIT1 family of iron transporters and its regulation in fungi
2020
Iron is an essential micronutrient for most living beings since it participates as a redox active cofactor in many biological processes including cellular respiration, lipid biosynthesis, DNA replication and repair, and ribosome biogenesis and recycling. However, when present in excess, iron can participate in Fenton reactions and generate reactive oxygen species that damage cells at the level of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Organisms have developed different molecular strategies to protect themselves against the harmful effects of high concentrations of iron. In the case of fungi and plants, detoxification mainly occurs by importing cytosolic iron into the vacuole through the Ccc1/V…
Antimicrobial Lubricant Did Not Reduce Infection Rate in Transrectal Biopsy Patients in a Large Randomized Trial Due to Low Complication Rates
2018
Abstract Background Transrectal prostate biopsy (pbx) is the most frequent outpatient procedure in the urological field. Septic complications are a major health issue. Objective To evaluate complication rates with or without an antimicrobial lubricant. Design, setting, and participants A total of 1000 patients received pbx between 2013 and 2015. Information about complications was collected by a 3-wk questionnaire. Return rate was 73.2% (n = 732). Intervention Randomization for pbx with the instillation of an antimicrobial lubricant (intervention group, n = 385) or the standard lubricant (control group, n = 347) was performed. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Multivariable anal…
Measuring the impact of tourism: a 'territorial' approach
2012
The nature of tourism and the spheres of activity relevant to managing it are changing both in character and in scope. Consequently, traditional statistical and management information resources are not adequate for effective tourism planning and for tourism impact evaluation because they are deficient both in scope and focus. To adapt to the evolving nature of tourism and realize the full value creation potential for all stakeholders, planners, managers and operators must adopt a new conceptualization of the “space” over which relevant tourism related activities occur and over which these activities must therefore be comprehended and managed. A “territorial space”, which is not defined simp…
Selection bias ed incentivi alle imprese nei programmi per lo sviluppo locale: una valutazione ex-post
2015
This paper focuses on the evaluation of an aid scheme included in a larger local development program realized in Italy during the 2000-2006 cycle of EU Structural Funds. It follows a previous analysis (Cusimano, Mazzola, 2014) on the ex-post evaluation of the effects of the aid schemes included in the so-called territorial integrated projects (tips) and aims at identifying the possible presence of selection bias in measuring the effectiveness of the policy. After running an empirical analysis based on several propensity score matching (psm) methods, we show that, at least partially, the positive results previously obtained may not be related to an effective success of the policy, but could …
