A new approach for critical resources allocation
2009
This paper presents a solution based on Artificial Intelligence using Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms to optimize the allocation of teachers and classrooms. The implementation was created in order to optimize the process in both cases, allowing them to compete so as to establish a balance and arrive at a feasible solution quickly and efficiently.
The COVID-19 Assessment for Survival at Admission (CASA) Index: A 12 Months Observational Study
2021
Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease with a high rate of progression to critical illness. However, the stratification of patients at risk of mortality is not well defined. In this study, we aimed to define a mortality risk index to allocate patients to the appropriate intensity of care. Methods: This is a 12 months observational longitudinal study designed to develop and validate a pragmatic mortality risk score to stratify COVID-19 patients aged ≥18 years and admitted to hospital between March 2020 and March 2021. Main outcome was in-hospital mortality. Results: 244 patients were included in the study (mortality rate 29.9%). The Covid-19 Assessment for Survival at Admi…
Lopinavir/ritonavir and darunavir/cobicistat in hospitalized covid-19 patients: Findings from the multicenter italian corist study
2021
Background: Protease inhibitors have been considered as possible therapeutic agents for COVID-19 patients. Objectives: To describe the association between lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) or darunavir/cobicistat (DRV/c) use and in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients.Study Design: Multicenter observational study of COVID-19 patients admitted in 33 Italian hospitals. Medications, preexisting conditions, clinical measures, and outcomes were extracted from medical records. Patients were retrospectively divided in three groups, according to use of LPV/r, DRV/c or none of them. Primary outcome in a time-to event analysis was death. We used Cox proportional-hazards models with inverse probability of…
Phase I dose-escalation single centre clinical trial to evaluate the safety of infusion of memory T cells as adoptive therapy in COVID-19 (RELEASE)
2021
Abstract Background Effective treatments are still needed to reduce the severity of symptoms, time of hospitalization, and mortality of COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 specific memory T-lymphocytes obtained from convalescent donors recovered can be used as passive cell immunotherapy. Methods Between September and November 2020 a phase 1, dose-escalation, single centre clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the infusion of CD45RA− memory T cells containing SARS-CoV-2 specific T cells as adoptive cell therapy against moderate/severe cases of COVID-19. Nine participants with pneumonia and/or lymphopenia and with at least one human leukocyte antigen (HLA) match with the don…
Ceftazidime-avibactam use for klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing k. pneumoniae infections: A retrospective observational multicenter study
2021
Abstract Background A growing body of observational evidence supports the value of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) in managing infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Methods We retrospectively analyzed observational data on use and outcomes of CAZ-AVI therapy for infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase–producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) strains. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify variables independently associated with 30-day mortality. Results were adjusted for propensity score for receipt of CAZ-AVI combination regimens versus CAZ-AVI monotherapy. Results The cohort comprised 577 adults with bloodstream infections (n = 391) or nonba…
Intelligibility in microbial complex systems: Wittgenstein and the score of life
2012
Knowledge in microbiology is reaching an extreme level of diversification and complexity, which paradoxically results in a strong reduction in the intelligibility of microbial life. In our days, the “score of life” metaphor is more accurate to express the complexity of living systems than the classic “book of life.” Music and life can be represented at lower hierarchical levels by music scores and genomic sequences, and such representations have a generational influence in the reproduction of music and life. If music can be considered as a representation of life, such representation remains as unthinkable as life itself. The analysis of scores and genomic sequences might provide mechanistic…
Vascular risk factors in Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment: population data from the Zabùt Aging Project
Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in older adults, accounting for about 60% of cases. However, autopsy studies suggested that mixed dementia, with vascular and neurodegenerative AD pathology, accounts for nearly 20% of dementia cases. Aims: Aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between isolated or clustered Vascular Risk Factors (VRFs)/diseases and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or AD. The study was conducted using a Sicilian population-based cohort dataset collected in low-educated, rural subjects, the Zabùt Aging Project (ZAP). The effect-modification by age, sex, education, genetic factor (APOE4 allele carrier), undernutrition,…
The Artek cup for total hip replacement of dysplastic hip joints.
2003
One specific difficulty in total hip replacement for developmental dysplasia of the hip is a shallow acetabulum with a short anteroposterior diameter. In a prospective cohort study we investigated the short-term results of the Artek cup, designed with a shallow outline and a height-reduced metal inlay for a large size 38 mm metal head, in a group of female patients with mild dysplasia of the hip.Fourteen consecutive patients with 17 dysplastic hip joints were included in the study. Their average age was 42 years. Fourteen hips had dysplasia Crowe grade I; 3 hips had dysplasia Crowe grade II. The femoral head centre was localized according to Pagnano in zone 1 in 3 cases, in zone 3 in 6 case…
Evaluating protein structures determined by structural genomics consortia.
2006
Structural genomics projects are providing large quantities of new 3D structural data for proteins. To monitor the quality of these data, we have developed the protein structure validation software suite (PSVS), for assessment of protein structures generated by NMR or X-ray crystallographic methods. PSVS is broadly applicable for structure quality assessment in structural biology projects. The software integrates under a single interface analyses from several widely-used structure quality evaluation tools, including PROCHECK (Laskowski et al., J Appl Crystallog 1993;26:283-291), MolProbity (Lovell et al., Proteins 2003;50:437-450), Verify3D (Luthy et al., Nature 1992;356:83-85), ProsaII (Si…
