Comparison of Studies on Mobile Phone Use and Risk of Tumors

2010

published results of ameta-analysis of studies on mobile phone use and risk of tumors. Intheir analysis, the authors included 23 case-control studies, covering abroad spectrum of tumor entities including uveal melanoma, testicu-lar cancer, parotid gland tumors, and brain tumors. However, the authors give no rationale for pooling these hetero-geneous, biologically rather diverse cancer sites, for which the local-ized exposure from the use of mobile phones is completely different. The key difference between this particular meta-analysis com-pared with earlier ones is the use of a quality score. Bayesian joint modeling of bivariate longitudinal and competing risks data: An application to study patient-ventilator asynchronies in critical care …

2017

Mechanical ventilation is a common procedure of life support in intensive care. Patient-ventilator asynchronies (PVAs) occur when the timing of the ventilator cycle is not simultaneous with the timing of the patient respiratory cycle. The association between severity markers and the events death or alive discharge has been acknowledged before, however, little is known about the addition of PVAs data to the analyses. We used an index of asynchronies (AI) to measure PVAs and the SOFA (sequential organ failure assessment) score to assess overall severity. To investigate the added value of including the AI, we propose a Bayesian joint model of bivariate longitudinal and competing risks data. Th…

The Stroke Riskometer (TM) App: Validation of a data collection tool and stroke risk predictor

2014

Background The greatest potential to reduce the burden of stroke is by primary prevention of first-ever stroke, which constitutes three quarters of all stroke. In addition to population-wide prevention strategies (the ‘mass’ approach), the ‘high risk’ approach aims to identify individuals at risk of stroke and to modify their risk factors, and risk, accordingly. Current methods of assessing and modifying stroke risk are difficult to access and implement by the general population, amongst whom most future strokes will arise. To help reduce the burden of stroke on individuals and the population a new app, the Stroke Riskometer™, has been developed. We aim to explore the validity of the app fo…

Balance with logic-measuring the performance and sustainable development efforts of an NPO in rural Ethiopia.

2021

The analysis of performance of Not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) is difficult because there are several objectives and perspectives to NPO performance and accountability, especially if considered sustainably and in long term. This suggests that performance analysis and measurement of NPOs might also involve multiple perspectives, such as in Balanced Scorecard (BSC) or in the Logical Framework (LF) models. This article is a case study of analysing the sustainable development and performance of an NPO in rural Ethiopia. We propose the Logic Balanced Scorecard (LBSC) model that combines elements of BSC and LF. This proposal was preliminarily used and tested in a five-year interventionist acc…

Vasoactive peptide urotensin II in plasma is associated with cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and constitutes a potential …

2019

National audience; OBJECTIVECerebral vasospasm (VS) is a severe complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Urotensin II (UII) is a potent vasoactive peptide activating the urotensin (UT) receptor, potentially involved in brain vascular pathologies. The authors hypothesized that UII/UT system antagonism with the UT receptor antagonist/biased ligand urantide may be associated with post-SAH VS. The objectives of this study were 2-fold: 1) to leverage an experimental mouse model of SAH with VS in order to study the effect of urotensinergic system antagonism on neurological outcome, and 2) to investigate the association between plasma UII level and symptomatic VS after SAH in huma…

Increased serum miR-193a-5p during non-alcoholic fatty liver disease progression: Diagnostic and mechanistic relevance

2022

Background & Aims Serum microRNA (miRNA) levels are known to change in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and may serve as useful biomarkers. This study aimed to profile miRNAs comprehensively at all NAFLD stages. Methods We profiled 2,083 serum miRNAs in a discovery cohort (183 cases with NAFLD representing the complete NAFLD spectrum and 10 population controls). miRNA libraries generated by HTG EdgeSeq were sequenced by Illumina NextSeq. Selected serum miRNAs were profiled in 372 additional cases with NAFLD and 15 population controls by quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR. Results Levels of 275 miRNAs differed between cases and population controls. Fewer differences were seen wi…

Estratificación del riesgo de pacientes con dolor torácico sin elevación del segmento ST en la puerta de urgencias

2003

Objectives. To investigate the prognostic factors in patients who come to the emergency room with chest pain but without ST segment elevation. Patients and method. 743 consecutive patients were evaluated by recording clinical history, electrocardiogram and troponin I determination, and early (< 24 h) exercise testing was done for the low-risk subgroup of patients (n = 203). All patients were followed during 3 months for major events (acute myocardial infarction or death). Results. Major events occurred in 71 patients (9.6%). Multivariate analysis (C stadistic = 0.79; 95% CI 0.730.84; p = 0.0001) identified the following predictors: age ≥ 72 years (OR = 1.7; 95% CI, 1.0-2.9; p = 0.05), insul…

Adjuvant Imatinib in Patients with GIST Harboring Exon 9 KIT Mutations : Results from a Multi-institutional European Retrospective Study

2022

[Purpose] The effect of high-dose imatinib (800 mg/day) on survival in the adjuvant treatment of patients with resected KIT exon 9–mutated gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) is not established. Here, the association of dose and other clinicopathologic variables with survival was evaluated in a large multi-institutional European cohort.
