ProstateAnalyzer: web-based medical application for the management of prostate cancer using multiparametric MR imaging

2016

Objectives: In this paper, we present ProstateAnalyzer, a new web-based medical tool for prostate cancer diagnosis. ProstateAnalyzer allows the visualization and analysis of magnetic resonance images (MRI) in a single framework. Methods: ProstateAnalyzer recovers the data from a PACS server and displays all the associated MRI images in the same framework, usually consisting of 3D T2-weighted imaging for anatomy, dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for perfusion, diffusion-weighted imaging in the form of an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map and MR Spectroscopy. ProstateAnalyzer allows annotating regions of interest in a sequence and propagates them to the others. Results: From a representat…

Scoring systems for Oral Lichen Planus used by differently experienced raters

2017

BACKGROUND: Scoring systems have been widely used to evaluate the severity and activity of oral lichen planus (OLP). The aim of the present study was to compare two existing (one modified) scoring systems in the evaluation of OLP severity and correlation with pain. Three differently experienced raters were involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with OLP were assessed for pain using the Visual Analogue Scale and examined at 10 intraoral sites before starting (T0) and three weeks after (T1) steroid therapy (Clobetasol). Three differently experienced raters evaluated photographs using two scoring systems designated White-Erosive-Atrophic (WEA) modified from an older WEA system (…

The Importance of Lipidomic Approach for Mapping and Exploring the Molecular Networks Underlying Physical Exercise: A Systematic Review

2021

Maintaining appropriate levels of physical exercise is an optimal way for keeping a good state of health. At the same time, optimal exercise performance necessitates an integrated organ system response. In this respect, physical exercise has numerous repercussions on metabolism and function of different organs and tissues by enhancing whole-body metabolic homeostasis in response to different exercise-related adaptations. Specifically, both prolonged and intensive physical exercise produce vast changes in multiple and different lipid-related metabolites. Lipidomic technologies allow these changes and adaptations to be clarified, by using a biological system approach they provide scientific u…

Designing a new scoring system (QualyP Score) correlating the management of cardiopulmonary bypass to postoperative outcomes

2014

Aim: The aim of this study was to ascertain if a score, directly derived from CPB records, could correlate to major postoperative outcomes. Methods: An additive score (QualyP Score) was created from 10 parameters: peak lactate value during CPB, peak VCO2i, lowest DO2i/VCO2i, peak respiratory quotient, CPB time, cross-clamp time, lowest CPB temperature, circulatory arrest, ultrafiltration during CPB, number of packed red cells transfused intraoperatively. The PerfSCORE was calculated, as well. Multivariable logistic regression models were built to detect the independent predictors of: peak lactate >3 mmol/L during the first three postoperative days; the incidence of acute kidney injury ne…

Predicting patient outcome from acute renal failure comparing three general severity of illness scoring systems

2000

Predicting patient outcome from acute renal failure comparing three general severity of illness scoring systems.BackgroundA major problem of studies on acute renal failure (ARF) arises from a lack of prognostic tools able to express the medical complexity of the syndrome adequately and to predict patient outcome accurately. Our study was thus aimed at evaluating the predictive ability of three general prognostic models [version II of the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II), version II of the Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS II), and version II of the Mortality Probability Model at 24 hours (MPM24 II)] in a prospective, single-center cohort of patients with ARF …

Effect of Match Location, Team Ranking, Match Status and Tactical Dimensions on the Offensive Performance in Spanish ‘La Liga’ Soccer Matches

2019

The aim of this paper was to study the combined effects of tactical and contextual dimensions on achieving offensive performance in open play possessions from Spanish “La Liga” soccer matches. 1860 team possessions from 20 random matches were evaluated by means of multidimensional observation. Multilevel regression models were constructed to predict the probability to achieve offensive performance according to the tactical and contextual dimensions registered in each possession. Performing penetrative actions after recovering the ball (OR = 1.497; 95% CI: 1.022–2.192; P < 0.05), and progressing by fast attacks (OR = 3.588; 95% CI: 2.045–6.294; p < 0.001) or counterattacks (OR = 7.097;…

Validation of the revised international prognostic scoring system (IPSS-R) in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome: a multicenter study.

2013

The revised IPSS (IPSS-R) was developed aiming at a better prognostication, taking into account patients treated with best supportive care. We herein validated this model on the basis of data from 1314 patients who received BSC only as well as patients who underwent induction chemotherapy (n=214) or allogeneic transplantation (n=167). We could demonstrate a clear distinction of the IPSS-R risk categories with regard to survival and risk of AML evolution in all patient cohorts. When comparing IPSS-R, IPSS, WHO prognostic scoring system (WPSS) and Duesseldorf score, the best results regarding the ability to predict survival were obtained by the IPSS-R.

Single nucleotide polymorphism array karyotyping: A diagnostic and prognostic tool in myelodysplastic syndromes with unsuccessful conventional cytoge…

2013

Cytogenetic aberrations identified by metaphase cytogenetics (MC) have diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). However, in some MDS patients MC study is unsuccesful. Single nucleotide polymorphism array (SNP-A) based karyotyping could be helpful in these cases. We performed SNP-A in 62 samples from bone marrow or peripheral blood of primary MDS with an unsuccessful MC study. SNP-A analysis enabled the detection of aberrations in 31 (50%) patients. We used the copy number alteration information to apply the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) and we observed differences in survival between the low/intermediate-1 and intermediate-2/h…

Myelodysplastic Syndromes with 20q Deletion: Incidence, Prognostic Value and Impact on Response to Azacitidine of ASXL1 Chromosomal Deletion and Gene…

2020

Introduction : The 20q deletion [del(20q)] is a recurrent chromosomal aberration in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and, as a single abnormality, is associated according to the Revised International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-R) with a favorable outcome. However, the breakpoint of del(20q) is very heterogeneous and may cause deletion of the ASXL1 gene (20q11.21). This gene is an important epigenetic regulator of hematopoiesis and its mutations have been associated in MDS with a shorter overall survival (OS) and a lower response to azacitidine (AZA). Aim: To assess the incidence, prognostic value and impact on response to AZA of ASXL1 chromosomal alterations and genetic mutations in MDS…

Long-Term Survival Data in 652 Patients with Primary Myelofibrosis or Polycythemia Vera— Trends in Recent Years.

2009

Abstract Abstract 2910 Poster Board II-886 Background: Polycythemia vera (PV) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF) are stem cell-derived myeloproliferative neoplasms characterized clinically by increased red cell volume and bone marrow fibrosis, respectively. Phlebotomy is the cornerstone of treatment in PV whereas hydroxyurea has been the traditional drug of choice in both PV and PMF. Over the last 20 years, several new treatment approaches have been introduced and promoted (e.g. interferon-alpha, anagrelide, thalidomide, allogeneic stem cell transplantation) but their benefit in terms of survival has not been confirmed in controlled studies. Methods: Study patients were recruited form the Mayo…
