2011
International audience; This study opposes, on the one hand, the concept exposed by linguist and theoretician Charles Nodier (1780-1844) in his Elementary Notions in Linguistics (1834) referring to the inalterable spelling of proper nouns, and, on the other hand, his practice as a storyteller and creator in his Trilby (1822). We will also consider answering the question of the gallicization of the toponym "Argyle" (allusion to the lake region in Scotland), spelled "Argail" by Nodier in his tale, contrary to all expectations. "Argail" , beyond the mere process of transliteration and trompe-l’oeil justifications revealed by Nodier himself in the preface of his book, opens up to subtle manipul…

Papers on the Conservation of Ancient Monuments and Remains. John Ruskin, Gilbert Scott e la Carta inglese della Conservazione (Londra, 1865)
2019
A novel murine model of aging of the human retina
2008
Purpose Accumulation of lipids, and especially of cholesteryl esters, under the retinal pigment epithelium and within Bruch’s membrane is a normal feature of aging and has also been observed in human eyes with age-related maculopathy. Our objective was to evaluate the retinal phenotype of apoB100,LDLR-/- mice, a model for lipid metabolism dysfunction and potentially of aging of the retina. Methods ApoB100,LDLR-/- mice were studied at 7 and 14 months of age by standard scotopic and photopic electroretinography by comparison to control animals. Fundus images were obtained with a confocal SLO (Heidelberg Retina Angiograph). The integrity of the vascular system was investigated by means of fluo…
PRCD is concentrated at the base of photoreceptor outer segments and is involved in outer segment disc formation.
2019
Abstract Mutations of the PRCD gene are associated with rod-cone degeneration in both dogs and humans. Prcd is expressed in the mouse eye as early as embryonic day 14. In the adult mouse retina PRCD is expressed in the outer segments of both rod and cone photoreceptors. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that PRCD is located at the outer segment rim, and that it is highly concentrated at the base of the outer segment. Prcd-knockout mice present with progressive retinal degeneration, starting at 20 weeks of age and onwards. This process is reflected by a significant and progressive reduction of both scotopic and photopic electroretinographic responses, and by thinning of the retina, and spec…

Problematics of Bonds in Hugh MacDiarmid's Poetry
2012
Hugh MacDiarmid is considered the most important Scottish poet of the 20th century. He is mostly celebrated for the Scots lyrics he wrote in the 1920s and his long poem A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle, published in 1926. Because of their fragmentation, the poems of the Thirties, most of which were part of the unpublished project Mature Art, and In Memoriam James Joyce (1955), have not attracted the same critical attention. However, they represent the culmination of a very complex stylistic crisis that this study offers to analyse thanks to the question of bonds, especially problematic bonds. The poetry portrays humanity torn by social division, treason and death, but it deals with loss too…
AUTONOMIA DEL DIRITTO PRIVATO SCOZZESE E DEVOLUZIONE DI POTERI AI SENSI DELLO SCOTLAND ACT DEL 1998
2012
The essay is aimed at briefly describing the ways in which the relationship between English law and Scottish law has been regulated over the centuries since the Act of Union, 1707 saw the light. In particular, an historical outline of the often re-adfirmed autonomy of Scottish law is here given, with regard to its firm upholding by Scottish Courts in famous cases. The inquiry that is at the heart of the present analysis touches upon the consequences that the passing of the Scotland Act 1998 by the Parliament of Westminster may have had on such autonomy. So, the question is whether or not this law has acted in a way to reinforce, rather than weaken, the idea that Scottish private law continu…
Direct measurement of NO3 radical reactivity in a boreal forest
2018
We present the first direct measurements of NO3 reactivity (or inverse lifetime, s−1) in the Finnish boreal forest. The data were obtained during the IBAIRN campaign (Influence of Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions on the Reactive Nitrogen budget) which took place in Hyytiälä, Finland during the summer/autumn transition in September 2016. The NO3 reactivity was generally very high with a maximum value of 0.94 s−1 and displayed a strong diel variation with a campaign-averaged nighttime mean value of 0.11 s−1 compared to a daytime value of 0.04 s−1. The highest nighttime NO3 reactivity was accompanied by major depletion of canopy level ozone and was associated with strong temperature inversion…
