The nucleosome-remodeling ATPase ISWI is regulated by poly-ADP-ribosylation.

ATP-dependent nucleosome-remodeling enzymes and covalent modifiers of chromatin set the functional state of chromatin. However, how these enzymatic activities are coordinated in the nucleus is largely unknown. We found that the evolutionary conserved nucleosome-remodeling ATPase ISWI and the poly-ADP-ribose polymerase PARP genetically interact. We present evidence showing that ISWI is target of poly-ADP-ribosylation. Poly-ADP-ribosylation counteracts ISWI function in vitro and in vivo. Noncanonical RNAs from transcripts of the Drosophila muscleblind gene.

It has become increasingly evident that eukaryotic cells produce RNA molecules from coding genes with constitutions other than those of typically spliced mRNA transcripts. Here we describe new cDNAs from the Drosophila melanogaster muscleblind (mbl ) locus that identify two such atypical RNA molecules: RNAs containing an incomplete exon 2 tandem repetition (mblE2E2#) or having exons with a different order compared to the corresponding genomic DNA (mblE2E3#E2#; exon scrambling). Oligodendrocytes in mouse corpus callosum are coupled via gap junction channels formed by connexin47 and connexin32.

According to previously published ultrastructural studies, oligodendrocytes in white matter exhibit gap junctions with astrocytes, but not among each other, while in vitro oligodendrocytes form functional gap junctions. We have studied functional coupling among oligodendrocytes in acute slices of postnatal mouse corpus callosum. By whole-cell patch clamp we dialyzed oligodendrocytes with biocytin, a gap junction-permeable tracer. On average 61 cells were positive for biocytin detected by labeling with streptavidin-Cy3. Background— Estrogens can upregulate endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in human endothelial cells by increasing eNOS promoter activity and enhancing the binding activity of the transcription factor Sp1. Resveratrol, a polyphenolic phytoalexin found in grapes and wine, has been reported to act as an agonist at the estrogen receptor. Minimal Absent Words in Rooted and Unrooted Trees

We extend the theory of minimal absent words to (rooted and unrooted) trees, having edges labeled by letters from an alphabet \(\varSigma \) of cardinality \(\sigma \). We show that the set \(\text {MAW}(T)\) of minimal absent words of a rooted (resp. unrooted) tree T with n nodes has cardinality \(O(n\sigma )\) (resp. \(O(n^{2}\sigma )\)), and we show that these bounds are realized. Then, we exhibit algorithms to compute all minimal absent words in a rooted (resp. unrooted) tree in output-sensitive time \(O(n+|\text {MAW}(T)|)\) (resp. \(O(n^{2}+|\text {MAW}(T)|)\) assuming an integer alphabet of size polynomial in n.

Relationship between the risk of falling and prescribed medication in community-dwelling elderly subjects.

Abstract Introduction: The risk of falling increases with age. A third of the population over 65 has one or more falls per year. Objetive: to know the relationship between drug prescription and falls in the elderly. Materials and Methods: a study was carried out through a community intervention in individuals ≥ 70 years of age. Results: The sample was composed of 249 participants, 160 women (64%), with a mean age of 74.47 years (SD 5.33). During the 12 months prior to the study, the mean of falls per person was 0.5 (SD 0.94), the mean of the risk factors was 2.73 (SD 1.4) and the mean of the medication prescribed was 4.2 (SD 3.0). The limited efficacy of available treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) requires the development of novel therapeutic approaches. We synthesized a novel cationic polymer based on α,β-poly-(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA) for drug delivery to HCC cells.
