Effects of integrated weed management in cropping systems on soils, microbial activity and N2O fluxes
2012
International audience; Cultivated soils have been widely highlighted as a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. This suggests that greenhouse gas emissions should be taken in account when evaluating the impact of new cropping systems. The development of integrated weed management in cropping systems introduces new agricultural practices (combinations of crop rotation, soil management, fertilization, and mechanical and chemical weed control, etc.), which may affect the microbial processes responsible for N2O production in soils. However, the effect of those practices remains to be assessed. Thus, the main objectives of our study is to provide (i) an accurate estimation of the inten…
What is the contribution of the residual weed floras to reduce nitrate leaching?
2018
International audience; Integrated crop protection tolerates residual weed floras if they are not harmful for crop production. Weeds are often solely considered with a negative viewpoint, but they may also provide beneficial services for agroecosystems, such as plant biodiversity promotion and trophic resources for other organisms such as pollinators. The role of residual weed flora as nitrate catchers, during the summer fallow, has seldomly been assessed, in spite of the high potential of some weed species to take up nitrogen. The present study aimed to (1) develop an indicator to account for the potential role of weed floras as nitrate catchers at the field scale, and (2) calculate this i…
2023
Redesigning agrosystems with more ecological regulations can help feed a growing population, preserve soils for future productivity and reduce environmental impacts. However, guidelines for redesigning agrosystems from natural systems are limited. Reviewing the last knowledge of ecosystem functioning, we outlined four ecological systems synchronizing the supply of soluble nutrients by soil biota to fluctuating plant nutrient demand. This synchrony limits deficiencies and excesses of soluble nutrient, which usually penalize both production and regulating services of agrosystems such as nutrient retention and soil carbon storage. We detail how ecological systems promoting synchrony can be ins…
