Practical Movements: Kinetic rituals in the Ancient Western Mediterranean

Scholars have studied the long-distance movements of people and goods in Phoenician and Punic society between the eighth and the second centuries BC in considerable depth. However, little attention has been paid to travelling, walking and sailing as common activities in their daily lives. it was through living in and moving through landscapes and seascapes that people constructed their sense of place. Sacred places may have been nodal points in these settings and everyday movements may well have become ritualized. International audience; A transversal reading of Derek Mahon's poems reveals his predilection for coastal landscapes: vistas of sea and seashore, harbour towns or seaside resorts. Suffused as they are with elemental symbolism (waves, wind, rain and storm, rocks, cliffs and misty piers), those liminal spaces take on a metaphysical dimension. The landscapes that the poet invests are the objective correlatives of his sense of alienation and vulnerability; they are mindscapes (paesagio mentale or reflections of the inner self) as much as territories to be paced and explored. Biographical materials and the writer’s journals show that Ann Radcliffe had some personal knowledge of the sea and to some extent of sailing. She was also a lover of nature, an enthusiast of 17th -century landscapists, a connoisseur of Pre-Romantic poetry, who was also familiar with contemporary esthetic tastes and theories. In this context, the article analyzes seascapes, maritime and nautical references, motifs of storm and shipwreck in Radcliffe’s Gothic romances, including some poetical lines inspired by the sea with which The Mysteries of Udolpho is interspersed.
