A bioluminescence technique for quantitative and structure-associated imaging of pyruvate
2006
A novel bioluminescence assay has been developed for measuring pyruvate within sections of snap-frozen tissue in a quantitative manner as well as with a spatial resolution on a microscopical level. The assay was verified via HPLC and two independent photometric tests. The novel assay makes it possible to determine pyruvate concentrations in cryosections in the range of 0-5.0 micromol/g tissue (dry weight). Based on the analysis of samples of given pyruvate concentrations, the assay exhibits a recovery with a deviationor =15%. The minimal detectable amount was 0.02 pmol based on a 20 microm thick tissue section with an area of 1 cm(2). Combination of the already established imaging biolumine…
Analytical prediction of ultimate moment and curvature of RC rectangular sections in compression
2013
This paper presents closed form expressions linking the ultimate bearing capacity to the ultimate curvature of rectangular RC sections subjected to axial load and bending moment acting in one of the two symmetry planes of the section. With respect to possible simplified formulations the following effects are also considered: confinement of the concrete, hardening of the longitudinal reinforcement, and presence of reinforcing bars distributed orthogonally to the neutral axis. The formulation is proposed in dimensional terms after a preliminary definition of the geometrical and mechanical parameters governing the structural response of the class of sections considered. The analytical expressi…
Modeling traffic safety at urban four leg-signalized intersections
2013
According to the state-of-the-art of the methodologies, the development of safety performance functions (SPFs) for road sections and intersections requires the employment of statistical models to predict expected crash frequencies on the basis of traffic volumes and site characteristics to be surveyed and used as input to models. Nevertheless, literature reports several studies on issues deriving from data features or methodological approaches that may invalidate the efficiency of the models and the accuracy of the estimates. Drawing inspiration from the above mentioned considerations, the objective of this study is to develop safety performance functions for a sample of urban four leg-sign…
Handling Underdispersion in Calibrating Safety Performance Function at Urban, Four-Leg, Signalized Intersections
2011
Poisson basic assumption of equidispersion is often too much restrictive for crash count data; in fact this type of data has been found to often exhibit overdispersion. Underdispersion has been less commonly observed, and this is the reason why it has been less convenient to model directly than overdispersion. Overdispersion and underdispersion are not the only issues that can be a potential source of error in specifying statistical models and that can lead to biased crash-frequency predictions; these issues can derive from data properties (temporal and spatial correlation, time-varying explanatory variables, etc.) or from methodological approach (omitted variables, functional form selectio…
Fragilità e situazioni carcerarie tra circuiti, sezioni protette e diritti negati
2023
A look at the functions of the prison through the lens of fragility allows us to highlight the limits of the current penitentiary system, inviting the interpreter to reflect on possible solutions to contain its known neg…
Accounting for dispersion and correlation in estimating Safety Performance Functions. An overview starting from a case study
2013
In statistical analysis of crash count data, as well as in estimating Safety Performance Functions (SPFs), the failure of Poisson equidispersion hypothesis and the temporal correlation in annual crash counts must be considered to improve the reliability of estimation of the parameters. After a short discussion on the statistical tools accounting for dispersion and correlation, the paper presents the methodological path followed in estimating a SPF for urban four-leg, signalized intersections. Since the case study exhibited signs of underdispersion, a Conway-Maxwell-Poisson Generalized Linear Model (GLM) was fitted to the data; then a quasi-Poisson model in the framework of Generalized Estim…
Modelling Photoionisations in Tautomeric DNA Nucleobase Derivatives 7H-Adenine and 7H-Guanine: Ultrafast Decay and Photostability
2021
The study of radiation effects in DNA is a multidisciplinary endeavour, connecting the physical, chemical and biological sciences. Despite being mostly filtered by the ozone layer, sunlight radiation is still expected to (photo)ionise DNA in sizeable yields, triggering an electron removal process and the formation of potentially reactive cationic species. In this manuscript, photoionisation decay channels of important DNA tautomeric derivatives, 7H-adenine and 7H-guanine, are characterised with accurate CASSCF/XMS-CASPT2 theoretical methods. These simulation techniques place the onset of ionisation for 7H-adenine and 7H-guanine on average at 8.98 and 8.43 eV, in line with recorded experimen…
Search for high-mass resonances decaying to dimuons at CDF.
2009
We present a search for high-mass neutral resonances using dimuon data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. No significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed in the dimuon invariant-mass spectrum. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on sigma BR(pp -> X ->mu mu), where X is a boson with spin-0, 1, or 2. Using these cross section limits, we determine lower mass limits on sneutrinos in R-parity-violating supersymmetric models, Z(') bosons, and Kaluza-Klein gravitons in the Randall-Sundrum model.
Neutron cross section measurements at n_TOF for ADS related estudies
2005
A neutron Time-of-Flight facility (n_TOF) is available at CERN since 2001. The innovative features of the neutron beam, in particular the high instantaneous flux, the wide energy range, the high resolution and the low background, make this facility unique for measurements of neutron induced reactions relevant to the field of Emerging Nuclear Technologies, as well as to Nuclear Astrophysics and Fundamental Nuclear Physics. The scientific motivations that have led to the construction of this new facility are here presented. The main characteristics of the n_TOF neutron beam are described, together with the features of the experimental apparata used for cross-section measurements. The main res…
Al di là dell’opposizione tra “malessere concettuale” e “cattiva coscienza”. Sul disagio dell’antropologia contemporanea di fronte al maltrattamento …
2021
In this paper I propose a critical examination of the ways in which the intersections between violence, suffering and domination in some of the main new directions of the anthropological study of the relationships between humans and other animals, notably Ingold's approach, Descola’s theory of “schemas of the practice”, and multispecies ethnography. Apparently, and despite the emphasis given to the sentience and forms of agency of non-human animals, as well as to their being active coparticipants, together with humans, in the construction of social networks and the habitats that bind both, these intersections do not occupy a prominent place in these approaches, both from the point of view o…
