Sector reputation and public organisations
2008
PurposeEconomic pressures and rising stakeholder expectations have led public sector organisations to measure their reputation. The paper aims to highlight the importance of reputation for the public sector, define sector reputation and report findings on a quantitative study of sector reputations of four different types of Finnish public sector organisations.Design/methodology/approachInspired by stakeholder theory and the value of organisational reputation, a quantitative survey of stakeholder assessments on reputation was carried out in the 12 organisations from the field of the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in 2003. The organisations represented four sectors: research, a…
Social Responsibility and Health Care Public Sector: Some Notes on the Concept of “Value”
2013
This chapter outlines the concept of value specifically within the context of public sector. Starting from the literature, it defines a new concept of value that better fits with the public sector organizations characteristics. In doing this it proposes a shift on the established doctrine for making the expectations of multiple stakeholders converge. Firstly, basic framework of the characteristics of public health agencies is made; secondly, the identification of the main stakeholders of public health agencies and their expectations towards these institutions; and finally a definition of health value, intended as a specification of the concept of “public value” in the context of public heal…
Practitioners’ conceptions of ethical practice in social networking in career services
2018
AbstractThis article reports on a phenomenographic investigation into practitioners’ conceptions of ethical practice in social networking in career services. The results show that ethical practice was conceived as stemming from: (1) an information orientation, (2) a networking orientation, (3) an educational orientation, and (4) a collaborative orientation. Differences appeared along six dimensions including: approach, activities, level of usage, perception, strategy and ethical principles. The findings give us a more profound understanding of critical aspects that may have an important role in relation to further developments and the successful implementation of existing and emerging techn…
Professionalization of the Finnish voluntary sports sector : case study of the Tennis Club of Jyväskylä 1993-2016
2018
Professionalization of sports is an on-going phenomenon. Voluntary sports clubs have been based on the values of amateurism. Recently, the trend of professionalization has had effects on the voluntary sports sector. The main aim of the thesis is to explore, describe, understand, and highlight the development, changes, and challenges of the Tennis Club of Jyväskylä (JTS) while moving towards professionalism from 1993 to 2016. At the end, the goal of the study is to enhance our understanding of the voluntary sports club´s operational environment. Qualitative research method, a case study, was used in this study. The data of the study was collected through semi-structured interviews with five …
Combination of Searches for Invisible Higgs Boson Decays with the ATLAS Experiment
2019
Dark matter particles, if sufficiently light, may be produced in decays of the Higgs boson. This Letter presents a statistical combination of searches for H → invisible decays where H is produced according to the standard model via vector boson fusion, Z(ℓℓ)H, and W/Z(had)H, all performed with the ATLAS detector using 36.1 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV at the LHC. In combination with the results at √s = 7 and 8 TeV, an exclusion limit on the H → invisible branching ratio of 0.26(0.17-0.05+0.07) at 95% confidence level is observed (expected).
Evaluating the Efficiency of Water Distribution Network Sectors Using the DEA-Weight Russell Directional Distance Model: The Case of the City of Vale…
2021
In many cities, sectorization projects of the drinking water distribution network have been implemented. This study provides a methodology to evaluate the efficiency of the sectors of a water distribution network by applying a data envelopment analysis weighted Russell directional distance (DEA-WRDD) model. This non-radial DEA model gives the overall efficiency of each unit of analysis, as well as each input, output, and undesirable output considered in the evaluation. The variables used in the analysis provide a multidisciplinary view: economic factors (covering costs), water quality parameters, and technical aspects. The empirical analysis was performed for the sectors of the water distri…
Legislative reforms and market dynamics in the provision of urban water service by private contract operators in Spain
2022
Abstract This paper studies the dynamics of concentration in the Spanish market for the provision of urban water service by private contract operators in the 2000–2020 period. The market is highly concentrated. Concentration increased until 2007, at which point it started to decline when Law 30/2007 on Public Sector Contracts and Organic Law 8/2007 on Political Party Financing were passed; before rising again from 2016 onwards. This latter trend results from strategic behaviour by the two leading operators, acquiring smaller companies with a notable presence in some regional markets. Further legislative reforms aimed at safeguarding space for competition are thus proposed.
Industrialization Strategies and Regional Actors
2021
Against the backdrop of the partly normative, partly empirical policy framework, the major regional industrial policy documents of the African Union, EAC, ECOWAS, SACU and SADC are examined as to their applicability. The empirical cases of the West African dairy and textile value chains are used to discuss the difficulties of regional priority-setting. The precise roles of (a) regional financial institutions, (b) regional development aid, including the panoply of ‘private sector development’ (PSD) projects and (c) regional business associations are defined. A concise summary of the essentials of common industrial policy concludes the chapter.
The Need of a Dynamic Performance Management Approach to Foster Sustainable Organizational Development
2016
The concept of organizational growth concerns the strategic domain of management. It underlies the aptitude of an organization to attain a set of results leading to its long-term success and continuity.
FINLAND: The Importance of the Private Sport Sector Has Increased in the 2000s
2017
The voluntary sector and the public sector continue to be the main actors in the Finnish sport system; however, in the last decades their importance has declined. Along with the economic downturn, the number of services offered in the public sector has been reduced, and the nature of volunteering has also changed. Voluntary work has received market-based and consumer-like features. Services previously produced by volunteers are currently settled by payments. Owing to changes in the voluntary sector and in the public sector, the importance of the private sector has increased in the 2000s.
