Rituales, descentramientos territoriales y niveles de identidad: La Semana Santa Marinera de Valencia
2011
The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the Semana Santa Marinera processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. Media coverage of the ritual means that new virtual communities with no fixed territorial base are created, and the complexity of this phenomenon …

Eastern Spirituality and Democratic Citizenship: Teaching of Religion in Aldo Capitini’s Lessons (1949-1950)
2021
The aim of the present research is to retread the didactic and pedagogical proposal of Aldo Capitini regarding the teaching of religion. He is the founder of Non-violent Italian Movement and proposes a new religion inspired by the vision of the India Master Mahatma Gandhi. By using a phenomenological and hermeneutic method I examined various sources: literary (books, articles, critical literature), ar-chive files (epistolary, memos, lecture notes) legislatives, visual, audio-visual, in-ternet. Capitini elaborates an “open religion” to be taught in the “school of the future”, a laical religion that establishes a dialogue with all the different religious traditions and goes beyond the separat…
Religious Education in Secularist Kindergartens? Pedagogical Leaders on Religion in Norwegian ECEC
2022
According to the legal framework, religion forms a certain part of Norwegian early childhood education in publicly owned kindergartens. As the only Scandinavian country where this is the case, the object clause (statement of purpose) for Norwegian kindergartens defines basic values in the Christian and humanist heritage and tradition as the value foundation for the institution. In this article we explore the impact of the processes of secularization and pluralization on the pedagogical content of early childhood education, and how some pedagogical leaders understand the religious elements. Empirically, the article is partly based on qualitative interviews targeting seven public kindergarten…
Paths to the recognition of homo-parental adoptive rights in the EU-27: a QCA analysis
2015
ABSTRACTAlthough the recognition of the adoptive rights of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) couples is a socially salient topic, cross-national variation regarding this issue has been largely underexplored in social science research. With the aid of configurational analysis, this article fills this gap and shows the conditions that explain the recognition of the adoptive rights of homosexual couples in the countries of the EU-27. It is argued that two different paths led to this outcome. All countries where adoptive rights were recognized had higher degrees of secularization and lower levels of social homophobia. In addition, in Northern European countries, the Protestant back…
Social Geographical Patterns in Membership of the Established Church in Denmark
2019
The Church of Denmark was established in 1849 and is regarded as a pillar of traditional national identity. This status is being challenged by a steady decline in membership in recent decades. The Capital area is especially prone to low membership rates, and this regional pattern remains when the analysis controls for income and education. Furthermore, the local membership rate is also related to affiliation to the neighbourhood. Our detailed analysis is based on public register data on the individual level combined with geographical mapping information. Denmark is thereby divided into micro-aggregated areas in order to locate varying church membership rates. While some local variation can …
Secular growth changes in the stature and weight of Amerindian schoolchildren and adults in the Chilean Andes, 1972-1987.
1997
A positive secular trend for stature and weight is evident in rural Aymara-speaking Indians of the Parinacota Province (>3,000 m) in the northern Chilean Andes. The study is based on two cross-sectional growth surveys carried out in 1972 and 1987. In the survey of 1972, which was undertaken by other authors, a sample of 190 individuals was considered. The 1987 survey, performed by the present author, comprises a sample of 170 Indians. Both children and adults of each sex, ages 6-29 years, are included. Secular comparisons of age-grouped means indicate a secular increase in stature and weight in Aymara children, adolescents, and adults in the Parinacota Province between 1972 and 1987. The Ay…

Social relations in older adults: Secular trends and longitudinal changes over a 16-year follow-up.
2010
Abstract Drawing on population studies in Finland, we investigated secular trends and longitudinal changes in social relations. The cohort comparison data comprised on 974 persons aged 65–69 years from three cohorts born between 1919 and 1939 and interviewed in 1988, 1996 and 2004. Longitudinal analyses were conducted for 635 persons aged 65–74 years over a 16-year follow-up at three measurement points. Social relations were studied on the basis of frequency seeing one's offspring, perceptions of the sufficiency of these contacts, and by asking whom the participants considered as their closest person and how often and in how many tasks they helped someone. The cohort comparisons showed that…
