A partial micro-foundation for the ‘two-worlds’ theory of morality policymaking: Evidence from Germany

2020

The two-worlds framework is currently the most important account of morality policymaking in Europe. For this theory of elite behaviour to be valid, a number of implicit assumptions about political belief systems at the mass level must hold. This contribution spells out these assumptions and tests them within a structural equation modelling framework, using original survey data from Germany, a country that constitutes a crucial case for the two-worlds theory. The results showed that the implicit individual-level preconditions of the two-worlds framework were fulfilled. Political secularism and partisanship were strongly associated. Political secularism also had strong effects on morality p…

Faith- based diplomacy and cultural security: Between pluralism and particularism

2023

Two basic approaches to faith-based diplomacy (FBD) have developed over the last twenty years. For some, it is a synonym of supra-denominational conflict prevention and resolution, and for others, it is an element of the state’s foreign policy exploited to achieve not just cultural but also political goals. The purpose of the chapter is to present the interrelationships between FBD and cultural security in the context of the “return of religion” and the “post-secular turn”. The conducted analysis, which is theoretical in nature, contributes to the discussion on the role of the religious determinant, pointing to the existence of two fundamentally separate approaches to the application of rel…

Homeschooling, freedom of conscience, and the school as republican sanctuary: an analysis of arguments representing polar conceptions of the secular …

2016

This paper examines how stances and understandings pertaining to whether home education is civically legitimate within liberal democratic contexts can depend on how one conceives normative roles of the secular state and the religious neutrality that is commonly associated with it. For the purposes of this paper, home education is understood as a manifestation of an educational philosophy ideologically based on a given conception of the good. Two polar conceptions of secularism, republican and liberal-pluralist, are explored. Republican secularists declare that religious expressions do not belong in the public sphere and justify this exclusion by promoting religious neutrality as an end in i…

Religious Education in Secularist Kindergartens? Pedagogical Leaders on Religion in Norwegian ECEC

2022

According to the legal framework, religion forms a certain part of Norwegian early childhood education in publicly owned kindergartens. As the only Scandinavian country where this is the case, the object clause (statement of purpose) for Norwegian kindergartens defines basic values in the Christian and humanist heritage and tradition as the value foundation for the institution. In this article we explore the impact of the processes of secularization and pluralization on the pedagogical content of early childhood education, and how some pedagogical leaders understand the religious elements. Empirically, the article is partly based on qualitative interviews targeting seven public kindergarten…

Matrimonio e Chiesa d’Inghilterra oggi

2015

It seems to take growing root in the West a certain idea of marriage, which appears to descend from the French secularism model, in being “counter-traditional”, respectful of the individual autonomy, and devoted to an “integral” application of the principle of equality. The proof is that it putted down roots in legal contexts poles apart from the above model, for their way to set the space and the relevance of religion in the public sphere. The study examines the emblematic English case, where this notion has led to the introduction of “same-sex marriage”, without the peculiar framework of the relations between the State and his national Church, with his singular legal tecnical implications…

Modeling the Effects of Religious Belief and Affiliation on Prosociality

2021

To what extent do supernatural beliefs, group affiliation, and social interaction produce values and behaviors that benefit others, i.e., 'prosociality'? Addressing this question involves multiple variables interacting within complex social networks that shape and constrain the beliefs and behaviors of individuals. We examine the relationships among some of these factors utilizing data from the World Values Survey to inform the construction of an Agent-Based Model. The latter was able to identify the conditions under which – and the mechanisms by which – the prosociality of simulated agents was increased or decreased within an “artificial society” designed to reflect real world parameters. …

La religione laica di John Dewey e di Aldo Capitini

2021

The contribution proposes an analysis on a subject that, today, appears more controversial than ever and full of ideas for reflection for the pedagogical world: the religion. This will be done through a reference to the theoretical contribution of John Dewey, who, presenting the terminology difference between the word "religion" and "religiousness", has disseminated the idea of a secular religion, whose values, transcending the boundaries of multiple religious confessions, can be fulfilled by all, contributing to the realization of democratic society. The deweyan approach will be compared to that of Aldo Capitini who, in a similar way to the American thinker, has promoted a form of secular …
