Sedimentation properties of chitosomal chitin synthetase from the wild-type strain and the 'slime' variant of Neurospora crassa.
1989
Marked differences in the pattern of sedimentation of cellular structures were observed after isopycnic centrifugation of crude cell-free preparations from the Neurospora crassa wall-less 'slime' variant and mycelial wild-type strain. Kinetic studies of particle sedimentation showed that the various types of subcellular components, as revealed by turbidity, UV absorption, polypeptide patterns, and chitin synthetase activity determinations, sediment independently of one another. An important feature was the finding that chitin synthetase from 'slime' peaked at a median specific gravity of 1.1201 +/- 0.0036, whereas that from wild-type strain sedimented at a higher buoyant density (specific g…
Pyostomatitis vegetans und Morbus Crohn: Eine spezifische Assoziation zweier Krankheiten
2008
HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS A 27-year-old man was referred to the dermatological out-patient clinic because of inflammatory changes in the oral mucosa of unknown cause. 5 months earlier he had been diagnosed as having Crohn's disease of the terminal ileum. On both sides of the buccal mucosa there were rough erythematous vegetations and disseminated miliary abscesses, which extended to the labial gingiva and the soft palate. Further physical examination was unremarkable. INVESTIGATIONS Several inflammatory parameters were increased: C-reactive protein 100 mg/l, erythrocyte sedimentation rate 55/88 mm, eosinophilic cationic protein 35.8 ng/ml (normal range 2.3-16 ng/ml).
One My scale subsidence of carbonate sedimentary bodies and the viscosity of the lower crust
2004
Abstract The possibility of flow of the lower crust under the load produced by carbonate sedimentary accumulations is investigated through the example of the Paris basin during the Middle Jurassic (i.e. Bathonian). Depositional geometries, water depths and sedimentary environments have been estimated and correlated for 164 sites spread over a surface of 380 per 220 km for three successive periods lasting each less than 0.8 My. A signal of relative vertical displacement has been extracted from water-depth and sedimentary thickness. Data have then been interpolated to produce maps of velocity of vertical displacement, sedimentation rate, water depth, and water-depth variation between two peri…
Aggregation and sedimentation of active Brownian particles at constant affinity.
2019
We study the motility-induced phase separation of active particles driven through the interconversion of two chemical species controlled by ideal reservoirs (chemiostats). As a consequence, the propulsion speed is non-constant and depends on the actual inter-particle forces, enhancing the positive feedback between increased density and reduced motility that is responsible for the observed inhomogeneous density. For hard discs, we find that this effect is negligible and that the phase separation is controlled by the average propulsion speed. For soft particles and large propulsion speeds, however, we predict an observable impact on the collective behavior. We briefly comment on the reentrant…
Some techniques for improving the resolution of finite difference component-wise WENO schemes for polydisperse sedimentation models
2014
Polydisperse sedimentation models can be described by a system of conservation laws for the concentration of each species of solids. Some of these models, as the Masliyah-Locket-Bassoon model, can be proven to be hyperbolic, but its full characteristic structure cannot be computed in closed form. Component-wise finite difference WENO schemes may be used in these cases, but these schemes suffer from an excessive diffusion and may present spurious oscillations near shocks. In this work we propose to use a flux-splitting that prescribes less numerical viscosity for component-wise finite difference WENO schemes. We compare this technique with others to alleviate the diffusion and oscillatory be…
Flotation with sedimentation: Steady states and numerical simulation of transient operation
2020
Abstract A spatially one-dimensional model of the hydrodynamics of a flotation column is based on one continuous phase, the fluid, and two disperse phases: the aggregates, that is, bubbles with attached hydrophobic valuable particles, and the solid particles that form the gangue. A common feed inlet for slurry mixture and gas is considered and the bubbles are assumed to be fully aggregated with hydrophobic particles as they enter the column. The conservation law of the three phases yields a model expressed as a system of partial differential equations where the nonlinear constitutive flux functions come from the drift-flux and solids-flux theories. In addition, the total flux functions are …
COMPARING PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS BY SEDIMENTATION AND LASER DIFFRACTION METHOD
2009
In this paper a brief review of the laser diffraction method is firstly carried out. Then, for 30 soil samples having a different texture classification sampled in Sicilian basin, a comparison between the two techniques is developed. The analysis demonstrated that the sand content measured by Sieve-Hydrometer method can be assumed equal to the one determinated by laser diffraction technique while an overestimation of the clay fraction measured by Sieve-Hydrometer method respect to laser diffraction technique was obtained. Finally a set of equations useful to refer LD measurements to SH method was proposed.
Comparison between grain-size analyses using laser diffraction and sedimentation methods
2010
A comparison between laser diffraction method (LDM) and the sieve-hydrometer method (SHM) was carried out for 228 soil samples representing a different texture classification sampled in a Sicilian basin. The analysis demonstrated that the sand content measured by SHM can be assumed equal to that determined by LDM technique, while the clay fraction measured by LDM was lower than that measured by the SHM. A set of equations to transform LDM results to SHM results was proposed. The influence of the LDM measurements of clay on the estimated percentage of silt + very fine sand particles (particle diameter ranging from 0.002 mm to 0.1 mm), which is useful for estimating soil erodibility, was also…
