Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis outcome measures and the role of albumin and creatinine: a population-based study.

2014

Importance There is an urgent need to identify reliable biomarkers of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progression for clinical practice and pharmacological trials. Objectives To correlate several hematological markers evaluated at diagnosis with ALS outcome in a population-based series of patients (discovery cohort) and replicate the findings in an independent validation cohort from an ALS tertiary center. Design, Setting, and Participants The discovery cohort included 712 patients with ALS from the Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta Register for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2011. The validation cohort comprised 122 patients with ALS at different stages of…

The Clinical Picture of Uncomplicated Versus Complicated Diverticulitis of the Colon

2007

Purpose There is no consensus about the correct definition of uncomplicated diverticulitis (UD) in clinical practice. We evaluated therefore whether clinical picture of UD differs from complicated diverticulitis (CD). Fifty consecutive eligible patients (21 males, 29 females, mean age 63.6 years, range 47–75 years) were studied. Symptoms, the inflammatory indices, and Computerized Tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen were assessed at the time of admission. Results Thirty-nine patients classified were affected by UD and 11 patients by CD. CD patients showed more severe clinical picture than UD and required urgent Hospital admission. Conversely, most of the patients affected by UD were treated…

Liquefaction and re-liquefaction of sediments induced by uneven loading and glacigenic earthquakes: Implications of results from the Latvian Baltic S…

2021

Abstract Seven internally-deformed layers were recognised in the shallow marine bay sediments deposited during mid Marine Isotope Stage 2 along the Latvian Baltic Sea coast bluff at Baltmuiža. Detailed sedimentological analyses of these deformed layers indicate that liquefaction was responsible for the development of soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) including injection structures, load casts, flame structures and pseudonodules. Traces of both initial liquefaction and re-liquefaction were recognised within at least four of the seven layers with SSDS (two different generations of pseudonodules and injection structures, clastic injection pipes, disrupted load casts). This is a uniqu…

Coastal Evolution in a Mediterranean Microtidal Zone: Mid to Late Holocene Natural Dynamics and Human Management of the Castellò Lagoon, NE Spain

2016

We present a palaeoenvironmental study of the Castelló lagoon (NE Spain), an important archive for understanding long-term interactions between dynamic littoral ecosystems and human management. Combining geochemistry, mineralogy, ostracods, diatoms, pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, charcoal and archaeo-historical datasets we reconstruct: 1) the transition of the lagoon from a marine to a marginal environment between ~3150 cal BC to the 17th century AD; 2) fluctuations in salinity; and 3) natural and anthropogenic forces contributing to these changes. From the Late Neolithic to the Medieval period the lagoon ecosystem was driven by changing marine influence and the land was mainly exploited …

Long-term non-sustainable soil erosion rates and soil compaction in drip-irrigated citrus plantation in Eastern Iberian Peninsula.

2021

Abstract Agriculture is known to commonly cause soil degradation. In the Mediterranean, soil erosion is widespread due to the millennia-old farming, and new drip-irrigated plantations on slopes, such as the citrus ones, accelerate the process of soil degradation. Until now, the published data about soil erosion in citrus orchards is based on short-term measurements. Long-term soil erosion measurements are needed to assess the sustainability of drip-irrigated citrus production and to design new strategies to control high soil erosion rates. The objective of this study is to assess long-term soil erosion rates in citrus plantations and report the changes in soil bulk density as indicators of …

Environmental Constraints on Pathways of Organic Detritus in a Semi-enclosed Marine System (W-Mediterranean)

2001

In order to assess seasonal and spatial changes in water-sediment interaction processes in a semi-enclosed marine system of Western Sicily (Marsala lagoon; W-Mediterranean), the biochemical composition of suspended and sediment organic matter was studied, during a one-year sampling period. The observed dynamic balance of resuspension vs. sedimentation processes and the macroalgal and vascular plant coverage appear major factors in affecting both amounts and biochemical composition of suspended and sedimentary organic matter and allowed us to identify two different sub-systems. The northern area, characterised by frequent wind-induced sediment resuspension events and by a scant vegetation, d…

Can recreational scuba divers alter natural gross sedimentation rate? A case study from a Mediterranean deep cave

2010

Abstract Di Franco, A., Ferruzza, G., Baiata, P., Chemello, R., and Milazzo, M. 2010. Can recreational scuba divers alter natural gross sedimentation rate? A case study from a Mediterranean deep cave. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 871–874. Submarine caves are environments with features distinguishing them from other littoral habitats but, despite their ecological importance, their response to anthropogenic disturbance has been seldom verified. One potential threat affecting natural communities within caves is represented by recreational scuba diving. Divers' disturbance within marine caves is mainly related to physical contacts and increased sediment resuspension potentially affecti…

Sedimentation of halloysite nanotubes from different deposits in aqueous media at variable ionic strengths

2019

Abstract Halloysite clay is a natural nanomaterial that is attracting a growing interest in colloidal science. The halloysite aqueous dispersion stability is a key aspect for the configuration of a purification protocol as well as to establish the durability of a formulation. A physico-chemical study demonstrated the role of ionic strength and nanotube characteristic sizes on the sedimentation behavior. We highlighted the importance of the electrostatic repulsions exercised between the particles in the settling process. A protocol for image analysis has been proposed to provide robust information from time resolved optical images on the suspensions. In conclusion, we managed to correlate mi…

Record of latest Barremian-Cenomanian environmental change in tectonically controlled depressions from the Jura-Burgundy threshold (Jura Mountains, e…

2019

The area of the western Jura Mountains constitutes the former Jura-Burgundy threshold between the Tethys Ocean and the epicontinental Paris Basin Sea. During the Barremian, the area was covered by a shallow-water Urgonian carbonate platform. Tectonic processes influenced the architecture of the Urgonian platform and were notably responsible for the formation of fault-related depressions on top of the Urgonian series, which were subsequently transformed into incised valleys and then to marine depocenters. Their sedimentary infills are mostly represented by the Perte-du-Rhône Formation and record stepwise environmental change on the innermost platform, which was strongly influenced by the nea…
