Effects of musicianship and experimental task on perceptual segmentation
2015
The perceptual structure of music is a fundamental issue in music psychology that can be systematically addressed via computational models. This study estimated the contribution of spectral, rhythmic and tonal descriptors for prediction of perceptual segmentation across stimuli. In a real-time task, 18 musicians and 18 non-musicians indicated perceived instants of significant change for six ongoing musical stimuli. In a second task, 18 musicians parsed the same stimuli using audio editing software to provide non-real-time segmentation annotations. We built computational models based on a non-linear fuzzy integration of basic and interaction descriptors of local musical novelty. We found tha…
Neuvolan liikuntaneuvontapalvelun kehittäminen tehokkaamman kohdentamisen avulla
2018
Fyysisessä aktiivisuudessa tapahtuu luonnollista vaihtelua elämän aikana muun muassa perheen ja lasten vuoksi. Tänä päivänä liian vähäinen fyysinen aktiivisuus on kuitenkin maailmanlaajuisesti merkittävä, kasvava ongelma. Jotta epäaktiivisuuteen voitaisiin puuttua ja pyrkiä estämään liikkumattomuuden lisääntymistä tulevilla sukupolvilla, tulee kiinnittää huomiota erityisesti kahteen tekijään: äitien merkittävään rooliin ja odotus- ja pikkulapsiajassa olennaisesti vaikuttavaan neuvolaan. Neuvoloissa tapahtuva liikuntaneuvonta on yksi keino, jolla voidaan pyrkiä vaikuttamaan positiivisesti yksilöiden terveyskäyttäytymiseen. Äitiys- ja lastenneuvolapalveluita koskevaa asiakaslähtöistä palvelut…

Analysis of microtomographic images of porous heterogeneous materials
2015
In this work, we study the phases of image processing chain of microtomographic imag- ing in order to obtain reliable results while optimizing the time spent on denoising and segmentation. We consider that the decisions made at the early phases of the processing chain are most important and the selection made there essentially determine the overall quality of imaging process. We also compare here various denoising method qualita- tively, however, we think that the pure noise removal ability is not the only requirement for noise removal in microtomographic images. By proper denoising we can affect selec- tion of segmentation methods and, thus, also the quality of the analysis. Additionally, …

Self-report measurement of segmentation, mimesis and perceived emotions in acousmatic electroacoustic music
2014
Acousmatic Electroacoustic Music is a form of art in which any sound is regarded to have the potential to be used as a basic unit to build a musical discourse. This study addresses the measurement of three important aspects of perception of Acousmatic Electroacoustic Music: Segmentation, which is the separation of the audio stream into units that could have meaning by themselves or that could be part of larger meaningful structures; Mimesis, which in this context is defined as the perceptual ability of identifying a possible and meaningful source that produced a sound and the action that produced it; Perception of Emotions, which shapes the meaning of perceived events. This document reports…
Words, clauses, sentences, and T-units in learner language: Precise and objective units of measure?
2020
In research on learner language complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF), syntactic complexity is often studied with quantitative measures based on words, clauses, sentences, and T-units. The findings have been mixed, but segmenting learner language into these units of measure has seldom been problematised, even if the need for accurate coding is well known. The present study explores words, clauses, sentences, and T-units as production units in written learner language using a corpus of 352 L2 Finnish texts (28,813 words). The results illustrate how written learner language can be hard to fit into the production unit categories, which are essential for the most frequently used quantitative m…
Identifying the Sales Patterns of Online Stores with Time Series Clustering
2018
Electronic commerce, especially in the business-to-consumer (B2C) context, has for years been a popular research topic in information systems (IS). However, the prior research on the topic has traditionally been dominated by the consumer focus instead of the business focus of online stores. For example, whereas various segmentations exist for online consumers based on their purchase behaviour, no such segmentations have been developed for online stores based on their sales patterns. In this study, our objective is to address this gap in prior research by identifying the most typical sales patterns of online stores operating in the B2C context. By using self-organising maps (SOM) to analyse …
