Selective attention in the news feed: An eye-tracking study on the perception and selection of political news posts on Facebook

2018

Social networking sites such as Facebook are becoming increasingly important as a source for news. However, few studies have investigated what drives attention to content within the news feed and what influences the selection of news posts. We hypothesized that attitude consistency, the credibility of a source, and comments of other users raise interest in a news post in the news feed and influence the selection decision. A 2 × 2 × 2 laboratory experiment ( N = 103) using eye-tracking measurement showed that attitude consistency did not influence attention distribution in the news feed, but users preferred to select news posts with content reinforcing their attitudes. Participants spent mor…

Objective and Subjective Party Leadership Selection: Regulations, Activists and Voters in Poland

2015

Over the last two decades, an increasing number of political parties have gradually formalized the influence of members in the process of leadership selection. This evolution has determined two partly contrasting behaviors in the new democracies of Eastern Europe: inclusive decision-making was formally mentioned but empirical evidence indicates implementation problems. Consequently, it remains an empirical question to what extent the East European political parties apply the formal provisions of inclusiveness when selecting their leaders. In order to provide an answer, this article compares the statutes and election regulations of four Polish parties with opinions of party members and voter…

Intrasexual competition at work: Sex differences in the jealousy-evoking effect of rival characteristics in work settings

2010

Sex differences in jealousy-evoking rival characteristics in the relationship with a supervisor at work were examined in a community sample of 188 individuals from Argentina. Among men, the rivals’ social dominance and communal attributes evoked the most jealousy, followed by physical dominance. Among women, the rival’s communal attributes evoked the most jealousy, followed by social dominance and physical attractiveness. For men physical dominance of the rival and for women physical attractiveness of the rival evoked relatively more jealousy, especially among those high in intrasexual competition and confronted with a same-sex supervisor. When confronted with an opposite-sex supervisor, s…

‘I’m still the master of the machine.’ Internet users’ awareness of algorithmic decision-making and their perception of its effect on their autonomy

2020

Algorithms are an integral part of our everyday lives and shape the selection and presentation of information and communication on the internet. At the same time, media users are faced with a lack of control and transparency when interacting with these systems because algorithms largely remain black boxes to end users. Relying on the notion that algorithms are socio-technical systems that comprise both technical and human components, this paper examines internet users’ awareness of algorithms in different areas of internet use and inquires into users’ perceptions of the impact of algorithms on their autonomy when interacting online. Empirically, we rely on qualitative interviews with 30 Ger…

Soft computing-based aggregation methods for human resource management

2008

Abstract We are interested in the personnel selection problem. We have developed a flexible decision support system to help managers in their decision-making functions. This DSS simulates experts’ evaluations using ordered weighted average (OWA) aggregation operators, which assign different weights to different selection criteria. Moreover, we show an aggregation model based on efficiency analysis to put the candidates into an order.

Soft Computing Techniques for Portfolio Selection: Combining SRI with Mean-Variance Goals

2014

A fuzzy portfolio selection model is presented incorporating a socially responsible goal without discarding a priori financially good portfolios or weakening a priori the financial goals. Hence, the optimal portfolios it provides could be either efficient from the strictly financial point of view or non-efficient if leaving the efficient frontier substantially improves the degree of social responsibility. The model can be used to direct heuristic procedures in order to select a reduced number of various alternatives from which the investor can directly make a final decision.

Soft Computing Methods for Personnel Selection Based on the Valuation of Competences

2014

Personnel selection based on candidates' competences is a difficult task due to the imprecise description of the applicants' competences and to the existence of several experts simultaneously evaluating those attributes. In this context, fuzzy sets theory provides suitable tools for the attainment of the maximum possible information from imprecise data. In this work, personnel selection methods are proposed that rely on the definition of an ideal candidate. Aggregated fuzzy valuations of each candidate are obtained taking into account the individual valuations provided by the experts. Then, candidates are ranked based on their similarity with the ideal candidate. Three different scenarios a…

JEM–X science analysis software

2003

The science analysis of the data from JEM-X on INTEGRAL is performed through a number of levels including corrections, good time selection, imaging and source finding, spectrum and light-curve extraction. These levels consist of individual executables and the running of the complete analysis is controlled by a script where parameters for detailed settings are introduced. The end products are FITS files with a format compatible with standard analysis packages such as XSPEC. Martinez Nuñez, Silvia, Silvia.Martinez@uv.es

Case studies and coupling of processes

2007

This chapter with eight authored sections presents a selection of possible application of microdynamic simulation to address geological questions. The various processes that have been introduced in the previous chapter were used, sometimes with minor additions or modifications. Because processes in rocks never operate in isolation, the reader will see that the various authors in this chapter have combined two or more processes to simulate the microstructural development under investigation. As such the authors have fully taken advantage of the possibility of the Elle software to couple processes.
