Diversity in search strategies for ensemble feature selection

2005

Ensembles of learnt models constitute one of the main current directions in machine learning and data mining. Ensembles allow us to achieve higher accuracy, which is often not achievable with single models. It was shown theoretically and experimentally that in order for an ensemble to be effective, it should consist of base classifiers that have diversity in their predictions. One technique, which proved to be effective for constructing an ensemble of diverse base classifiers, is the use of different feature subsets, or so-called ensemble feature selection. Many ensemble feature selection strategies incorporate diversity as an objective in the search for the best collection of feature subse…

<title>Distance functions in dynamic integration of data mining techniques</title>

2000

One of the most important directions in the improvement of data mining and knowledge discovery is the integration of multiple data mining techniques. An integration method needs to be able either to evaluate and select the most appropriate data mining technique or to combine two or more techniques efficiently. A recent integration method for the dynamic integration of multiple data mining techniques is based on the assumption that each of the data mining techniques is the best one inside a certain subarea of the whole domain area. This method uses an instance-based learning approach to collect information about the competence areas of the mining techniques and applies a distance function to…

The University of Valencia’s computerized word pool

1988

This paper presents the University of Valencia’s computerized word pool. This is a database that includes 16,109 Spanish words, together with 11 psychological variables for limited groups of items. The purpose behind the creation of this database was to have available a large quantity of verbal stimuli in a well-controlled system, ready for automatic selection. The description includes a summary of statistics on each of the 11 psychological variables, together with a correlational and factor analysis of them. This statistical analysis produces results close to those obtained for equivalent English material.

Quality based classification of gasoline samples by ATR-FTIR spectrometry using spectral feature selection with quadratic discriminant analysis

2013

Abstract A chemometric approach has been developed for characterization of gasoline samples regarding their quality. Attenuated total reflectance – infrared spectrometric data were processed by genetic algorithm (GA) and successive projection algorithm (SPA) feature selection techniques, being employed as an initial step prior to apply a discriminative tool. It was aimed to classify the fuel samples according to their quality passed/failed data. Chemometric predictive procedures were developed using quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) combined with GA and SPA as a feature subset and feature selection strategy. Results showed 93.3% and 95.6% accuracy for SPA-QDA and GA-QDA models respectiv…

Diagnosis and Planning in Immediate Loading: Implant Selection

2019

Despite the increasing patients’ desire for immediate prosthetic loading of implants, several factors must be taken into account before pursuing the immediate loading (IL) protocol. In general, the number, size, characterization, and distribution of implants should be based on the implant-prosthodontic plan, arch form, and available bone quality and quantity, regardless of the loading protocol. However, implant selection in IL represents one of the most important clinical challenges due to the primary stability requirement.

Selection of printed curriculum materials in physical education: Recontextualizing pedagogical knowledge

2011

This paper examines how teachers select printed curriculum materials in PE in Spanish secondary schools through Bernstein’s theory of the pedagogic device. The sample recruited were 310 secondary school PE teachers (210 male and 100 female) belonging to the Valencian community in Spain. The mean age of participants was 37.7 (SD 8.7) and the average of PE teaching years was 11.8 (SD 8.87). Teachers responded individually to an interview-administered questionnaire. Results showed teachers were highly involved in choosing the curriculum materials they use, and a slight predominance for teachers to prepare the PE lesson first and then to choose appropriate materials to develop it. Main selecti…

The socio-economic and communication challenges of spent nuclear fuel management in Finland

2010

Abstract One of the key factors behind the expansion of nuclear energy policy in Finland is nuclear waste management. As in many countries, nuclear waste management agencies are still struggling with the siting of intermediate and low level nuclear waste management facilities, in Finland Posiva, the nuclear waste company owned by the two nuclear power utilities Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) and Fortum Power and Heat (FPH), has been excavating a underground characterization facility since 2004 in the Olkiluoto site in the municipality of Eurajoki. The facility under construction is meant to be for a part of the final repository for disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The site selection process …

Presence of think tanks in the Spanish digital press

2020

The study of think tanks in Spain has been growing in the last few years with an equally increasing number of social and grassroots movements. This article offers content analysis results from a selection of eight Spanish think tanks in the digital press during a seven-year period, adding new conclusions to previous literature for the same period. Not only does this research explore the appearance on the media, but also the type of mentions and authorship of the articles and blogs included in the digital press, contributing to a deeper study of think tanks. The objective of this study is to analyse the limited presence of Spanish think tanks in media outlets and whether their appearance is …

For Whom is MAI? A Theoretical Perspective on Multilateral Agreements on Investments

2001

Why do we observe some LDCs objecting the prospect of a Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI), although they have been keen to liberalize investment in preferential agreements in recent years? In this paper, we analyse the issue of MAI implementation and assess the welfare consequences of such kind of agreements. In our model, participation to MAI involves a trade-off between less rent extraction from multinational firms (MNEs) and more abundant FDI inflows. At equilibrium, either all countries enter MAI, or all countries stay out, or only some of them enter. Coordination problems may induce multiple equilibria: the three typesof equilibria may coexist. So, the implementation of MAI ma…

The character and origin of the manuscripts in the present edition

1995

In the following I try to provide the reader with all the details needed to insert the Godel essays appearing here in the broader context of the rest of his unpublished work, as well as everything about my personal work on them. I start with a short description of what can be found in the Godel Nachlass in Princeton, USA, by referring to the catalogue prepared by John Dawson. Then I attempt to justify the particular selection I made of the manuscripts which I finally decided to study, reconstruct and publish. Such an explanation seems to be advisable given the great amount of Godel’s material unpublished but still extant. Also, I describe some of the historical details relevant to understan…
