Object-Guided Spatial Selection in Touch Without Concurrent Changes in the Perceived Location of the Hands

2012

In an endogenous cueing paradigm with central visual cues, observers made speeded responses to tactile targets at the hands, which were either close together or far apart, and holding either two separate objects or one common object between them. When the hands were far apart, the response time costs associated with attending to the wrong hand were reduced when attention had to be shifted along one object jointly held by both hands compared to when it was shifted over the same distance but across separate objects. Similar reductions in attentional costs were observed when the hands were placed closer together, suggesting that processing at one hand is less prioritized over that at another …

Differential transcriptomic profile in spermatozoa achieving pregnancy or not via ICSI

2010

Basic sperm analysis is limited as a method of estimating pregnancy. This study’s objective was use of microarray technology to differentiate the gene expressions of spermatozoa that achieved pregnancy in an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)cycle in an oocyte donation programme with those that did not achieve pregnancy. A study of nested cases and controls was designed to evaluate fresh and frozen spermatozoa from infertile males undergoing ICSI with donor oocytes. The global genome expression of pooled samples from each group (achieving pregnancy versus those that didn’t, from fresh or frozen spermatozoa)was compared using microarray analysis. The level of expression of some of the t…

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy: preoperative data, surgical technique and clinical outcomes

2019

Background: laparoscopic adrenalectomy has become the standard treatment for adrenal lesions. The better clinical outcoms of laparoscopic technique are valid for treatment of small benign masses (< 5-6 cm), instead there are still open questions in literature regarding the correct management of larger lesions (> 6 cm) or in case of potentially malignant adrenal tumors. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in a referral surgical department for endocrine surgery. Methods: at the University Hospital Policlinico "P. Giaccone" of Palermo between January 2010 and December 2017 we performed a total of 81 laparoscopic adrenalectomy. We created a retr…

Employability and personal initiative as antecedents of job satisfaction.

2009

In a changing and flexible labour market it is important to clarify the role of environmental and personal variables that contribute to obtaining adequate levels of job satisfaction. The aim of the present study is to analyze the direct effects of employability and personal initiative on intrinsic, extrinsic and social job satisfaction, clarifying their cumulative and interactive effects. The study has been carried out in a sample of 1319 young Spanish workers. Hypotheses were tested by means of the moderated hierarchical regression analysis. Results show that employability and personal initiative predict in a cumulative way the intrinsic, extrinsic and social job satisfaction. Moreover, th…

High-resolution HLA matching in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a retrospective collaborative analysis.

2013

To validate current donor selection strategies based on previous international studies, we retrospectively analyzed 2646 transplantations performed for hematologic malignancies in 28 German transplant centers. Donors and recipients were high resolution typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1. The highest mortality in overall survival analysis was seen for HLA-A, -B, and DRB1 mismatches. HLA-DQB1 mismatched cases showed a trend toward higher mortality, mostly due to HLA-DQB1 antigen disparities. HLA incompatibilities at >1 locus showed additive detrimental effects. HLA mismatching had no significant effect on relapse incidence and primary graft failure. Graft source had no impact on surviv…

Endonasal Approach for Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Tumor Removal

2001

Patients with benign (53) and malignant (22) tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses were treated for tumor removal via an endonasal approach. Patient selection was based on tumor location (centrally) rather than histology. Tumors attainable by the endonasal approach were located in the nasal cavity, the ethmoid sinus, the sphenoid sinus and the medial wall of the maxillary sinus. Endonasal microscopic techniques including endonasal orbital decompression and endonasal closure of CSF-leaks were combined with surgical navigation tools in selected cases. Surgical trauma and morbidity could be minimized without compromising radicality of tumor removal. Postoperative hospitalization was compara…

Short-Term Functional and Oncologic Outcomes of Nephron-Sparing Surgery for Renal Tumours ≥7cm

2011

Abstract Background Nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) for renal tumours preserves renal function and has become the standard approach for small renal tumours. Little is known about perioperative and oncologic outcomes of patients following NSS in renal tumours ≥7cm in the presence of a healthy contralateral kidney. Objective To analyse oncologic outcomes and perioperative morbidity in patients treated by NSS for renal tumours ≥7cm. Design, setting, and participants In total, 5767 patients were treated for renal tumours at two institutions from 1984 to 2009. In 91 patients, elective NSS was performed for renal tumours ≥7cm. Measurements Complication rates were assessed in detail and stratified u…

Treatment of Metachronous and Simultaneous Liver Metastases of Pancreatic Cancer

2009

Aim: Patients were analyzed who underwent treatment of liver metastases from pancreatic cancer. Methods: Selection criteria were the possibility of R0 resection of the primary and/or the liver metastases, no other sites of metastases, and the presentation of liver metastases. A comparison of treatment by surgery versus chemotherapy regarding overall survival and disease-free interval was performed. Results: Between 1996 and 2008, a total number of 23 patients were retrospectively identified from a prospective database of 193 cases of pancreatic cancer. In 14 cases, liver metastases were found simultaneously, and in 9 cases metachronou…

Evaluation of labial microvessels in Sjogren syndrome: A videocapillaroscopic study

2008

Summary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophtalmia. SS may occur alone (primary) or in association with almost any of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases (secondary), the most frequent being rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the labial mucosa in patients with SS. Methods A total of 20 patients affected by SS and 20 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertens…

A new method to investigate brain stem structural-functional correlations using digital post-processing MRI - reliability in ischemic internuclear op…

2001

We investigated the reliability of a new digital post-processing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique in ischemic brain stem lesions to identify relations of the lesion to anatomical brain stem structures. The target was a medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesion, which was evident from ipsilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). Sixteen patients with acute unilateral INO and an isolated acute brain stem lesion in T2- and EPI-diffusion weighted MRI within 2 days after the onset of symptoms were studied. The MRI slice direction was parallel and perpendicular to a slice selection of a stereotactic anatomical atlas. The individual slices were normalized and projected in the digita…
