Externalism, inclusion, and knowledge of content

2003

First-Person Authority and Self-Knowledge as an Achievement

2010

There is much that I admire in Richard Moran’s account of how firstperson authority may be consistent with self-knowledge as an achievement. In this paper, I examine his attempt to characterize the goal of psychoanalytic treatment, which is surely that the patient should go beyond the mere theoretical acceptance of the analyst’s interpretation, and requires instead a more intimate, first-personal, awareness by the patient of their psychological condition. I object, however, that the way in which Moran distinguishes between the deliberative and the theoretical attitudes is ultimately inconsistent with a satisfactory account of psychoanalytic practice; mainly because, despite Moran’s claims t…

Moran on Self-Knowledge, Agency and Responsibility

2006

SUMMARY : In this paper I deal with Richard Moran’s account of self-knowledgein his book Authority and Estrangement . After presenting the main lines of hisaccount, I contend that, in spite of its novelty and interest, it may have someshortcomings. Concerning beliefs formed through deliberation, the account wouldseem to face problems of circularity or regress. And it looks also wanting concerningbeliefs not formed in this way. I go on to suggest a diagnosis of these problems, according to which they would arise out of a view of agents too strongly dependenton the will.

Morality, Self-Knowledge and Human Suffering [introduction]

2012

This essay is in search of some light as to how one should respond to a certain kind of human suffering. The word 'should' undoubtedly raises a normative issue, and also the use of 'one' to refer to whoever may be subject to the corresponding normative demand. Choice of such words is hardly neutral and betrays a certain philosophical stance that, I hope, further considerations in this book will reasonably ground.

Self-knowledge and content externalism

1999

Why Is Mind-Wandering Interesting for Philosophers?

2018

This chapter explores points of contact between philosophy of mind and scientific approaches to spontaneous thought. While offering a series of conceptual instruments that might prove helpful for researchers on the empirical research frontier, it begins by asking what the explanandum for theories of mind-wandering is, how one can conceptually individuate single occurrences of this specific target phenomenon, and how one might arrive at a more fine-grained taxonomy. The second half of this contribution sketches some positive proposals as to how one might understand mind-wandering on a conceptual level, namely, as a loss of mental autonomy resulting in involuntary mental behavior, as a highly…

Review of Abnormal Self-Knowledge in Major Depressive Disorder

2019

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an affective disorder that is harmful to both physical and mental health. Abnormal self-knowledge, which refers to abnormal judgments about oneself, is a core symptom of depression. However, little research has summarized how and why patients with MDD differ from healthy individuals in terms of self-knowledge. Objective: To gain a better understanding of MDD, we reviewed previous studies that focused on the behavioral and neurological changes of self-knowledge in this illness. Main Findings: On the behavioral level, depressed individuals exhibited negative self-knowledge in an explicit way, while more heterogeneous patterns were reported in imp…
