Discovery-learning in grammar education:a study on anaphoric pronouns

2022

Is recursion language-specific? Evidence of recursive mechanisms in the structure of intentional action

2014

In their 2002 seminal paper Hauser, Chomsky and Fitch hypothesize that recursion is the only human-specific and language-specific mechanism of the faculty of language. While debate focused primarily on the meaning of recursion in the hypothesis and on the human-specific and syntax-specific character of recursion, the present work focuses on the claim that recursion is language-specific. We argue that there are recursive structures in the domain of motor intentionality by way of extending John R. Searle's analysis of intentional action. We then discuss evidence from cognitive science and neuroscience supporting the claim that motor-intentional recursion is language-independent and suggest so…

Semantically Closed Languages Reconsidered. Re-Reading Alfred Tarski

2019

The text shows that Alfred Tarski studied semantics to define a true sentence in a m a t e r i a l l y a d e q u a t e and f o r m a l l y c o r r e c t way, and in effect he defined the co-called semantically closed languages as a subset of formalized ones, in which the occurrence of the Liar paradox is imminent because of the features of the language used. This is one of the points of Tarski’s heritage where misunderstandings constantly occur among the readers of Tarski‘s work, and that is why the present paper may prove to be useful by presenting suitable excerpts from the original Tarski’s text. Tarski found additional limiting criteria applicable to formalised languages, which may prev…

Autobiographical texts written by learners of Catalan as an Additional Language: From formative needs to reflection in the teaching of narrative genr…

2022

In this article we analyse autobiographical narrative texts written by university students studying Catalan as an Additional Language at a CEFR (2020) B1 level. The goal is to analyse the formative needs related to the writing of this genre in order to foster metadiscursive reflection in the classroom that will allow students to improve their written output. To this end, we analyzed a corpus of 39 autobiographies at both the macrotextual level (i.e., rhetorical moves) and the microtextual level (i.e., deictic elements which channel the narrative’s organization). Our results show that the problems that these texts present for students are related to awareness of the elements that define the …
