A Semantic Web Approach for Geodata Discovery

2013

International audience; Currently, vast amounts of geospatial information are o ffered through OGC's services. However this information has limited formal semantics. The most common method to search for a dataset consists in matching keywords to metadata elements. By adding semantics to available descriptions we could use modern inference and reasoning mechanisms currently available in the SemanticWeb. In this paper we present a novel architecture currently in development in which we use state of the art triplestores as the backend of a CSW service. In our approach, each metadata record is considered an instance of a given class in a domain ontology. Our architecture also adds a spatial dat…

Use of Geospatial Analyses for Semantic Reasoning

2010

International audience; This work focuses on the integration of the spatial analyses for semantic reasoning in order to compute new axioms of an existing OWL ontology. To make it concrete, we have defined Spatial Built-ins, an extension of existing Built-ins of the SWRL rule language. It permits to run deductive rules with the help of a translation rule engine. Thus, the Spatial SWRL rules are translated to standard SWRL rules. Once the spatial functions of the Spatial SWRL rules are computed with the help of a spatial database system, the resulting translated rules are computed with a reasoning engine such as Racer, Jess or Pellet.

Graph-grammar semantics of a higher-order programming language for distributed systems

1994

We will consider a new tiny, yet powerful, programming language for distributed systems, called DHOP, which has its operational semantics given as algebraic graph rewrite rules in a certain category of labeled graphs. Our approach allows to separate actions which affect several processes from local changes such as variable bindings. We also sketch how to derive an implementation from this specification.

Hadron therapy information sharing prototype

2013

The European PARTNER project developed a prototypical system for sharing hadron therapy data. This system allows doctors and patients to record and report treatment-related events during and after hadron therapy. It presents doctors and statisticians with an integrated view of adverse events across institutions, using open-source components for data federation, semantics, and analysis. There is a particular emphasis upon semantic consistency, achieved through intelligent, annotated form designs. The system as presented is ready for use in a clinical setting, and amenable to further customization. The essential contribution of the work reported here lies in the novel data integration and rep…

HL7 FHIR with SNOMED-CT to Achieve Semantic and Structural Interoperability in Personal Health Data: A Proof-of-Concept Study

2022

Heterogeneity is a problem in storing and exchanging data in a digital health information system (HIS) following semantic and structural integrity. The existing literature shows different methods to overcome this problem. Fast healthcare interoperable resources (FHIR) as a structural standard may explain other information models, (e.g., personal, physiological, and behavioral data from heterogeneous sources, such as activity sensors, questionnaires, and interviews) with semantic vocabularies, (e.g., Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine—Clinical Terms (SNOMED-CT)) to connect personal health data to an electronic health record (EHR). We design and develop an intuitive health coaching (eCoach…

Al-Ghazāī on the Signification of Names

2010

AbstractAl-Ghazālī’s most detailed explanation of how signification works occurs in his treatise on The Beautiful Names of God. Al-Ghazālī builds squarely on the commentary tradition on Aristotle’s Peri hermeneias: words signify things by means of concepts and correspondingly, existence is laid out on three levels, linguistic, conceptual, and particular (i.e. extramental). This framework allows al-Ghazālī to put forward what is essentially an Aristotelian reading of what happens when a name successfully picks out a being: when a quiddity is named by some kind term, its referent in the mind is formally identical to the quiddity of an individual existent which belongs to that natural kind. Al…

The term “political oeconomy” in Adam Smith

2020

This article analyses the use of the term “‘political oeconomy” in the Wealth of Nations, considered by many the founding text of the discipline of Political Economy. It shows that Adam Smith could not accept the use of the term “political oeconomy” that had been made by other authors to indicate the subject matter of his scientific inquiry, devoted to the nature and causes of the wealth of nations; he used the term “political oeconomy” as a synonym for economic policy, especially in the fourth book of the Wealth of Nations. In order to understand this statement, it is necessary to keep in mind the methodological and epistemological perspective developed by Smith; in his view, the inquiry i…

Models, information and meaning

2018

Abstract There has recently been an explosion of formal models of signaling, which have been developed in order to learn about different aspects of meaning. This paper discusses whether that success can also be used to provide an original naturalistic theory of meaning in terms of information or some related notion. In particular, it argues that, although these models can teach us a lot about different aspects of content, at the moment they fail to support the idea that meaning just is some kind of information. As an alternative, I suggest a more modest approach to the relationship between the informational notions used in models and semantic properties in the natural world.

Els verbs semblar(-se), ressemblar i assemblar(-se) en els diccionaris normatius

2018
