Effects of musical valence on the cognitive processing of lyrics
2014
The effects of music on the brain have been extensively researched, and numerous connections have been found between music and language, music and emotion, and music and cognitive processing. Despite this work, these three research areas have never before been drawn together in a single research paradigm. This is significant as their combination could lead to valuable insights into the effects of musical valence on the cognitive processing of lyrics. Based on the feelings-as-information theory, which states that negative moods lead to analytic, systematic and fine-grained processing, while positive moods encourage holistic and heuristic-based processing, the current study (n = 64) used an e…
”Juhannuksena sää saattaa olla lämmin” : Mitä sanomalehtien sääkirjoitukset kertovat suomalaisten suhteesta säähän ja ilmastoon?
2020
Tämän vuoksi kiinnostus arkisten sääkokemusten tutkimukseen on kasvanut viime vuosina. Artikkeli tarjoaa katsauksen tähän kansainvälisesti kehittyvään kulttuurisen ilmastotutkimuksen kenttään, sekä tarkastelee empiirisesti sään kulttuurisia merkityksiä Suomessa sanomalehtiaineiston avulla. Empiirine…

Decoding brain activities of literary metaphor comprehension: An event-related potential and EEG spectral analysis
2022
Novel metaphors in literary texts (hereinafter referred to as literary metaphors) seem to be more creative and open-ended in meaning than metaphors in non-literary texts (non-literary metaphors). However, some disagreement still exists on how literary metaphors differ from non-literary metaphors. Therefore, this study explored the neural mechanisms of literary metaphors extracted from modern Chinese poetry by using the methods of Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) and Event-Related Spectral Perturbations (ERSPs), as compared with non-literary conventional metaphors and literal expressions outside literary texts. Forty-eight subjects were recruited to make the semantic relatedness judgment afte…
Lukiolaisten yleisönosastotekstien rakenne ja argumentointi
2010
This thesis examines the structure and argumentation of letters to the editor written by Finnish upper secondary school students. The research material includes 89 texts and the objective of the study is to determine the structure and argumentation of these texts. The rationale for the study of these argumentative texts is: (i) Lack of structure and argumentation skills by upper secondary school students. This fact has previously been established by several studies. (ii) General concern about the lack of teaching of argumentative skills. (iii) Social pressure that requires one to possess the ability to express an opinion, justify it (orally or in writing) and to criticise the views of other…
Adding ‘Sense’ to Conceptual Modeling : An Interdisciplinary Approach
2019
In this paper, our aim is to widen the prevailing foundations of conceptual modeling theories and practices, particularly in the context of information systems development. The approach shifts the focus from the link between a model and the modelled reality to the link between human cognition and the model. Our approach combines theoretical issues of different disciplines relevant to conceptual modeling. We shall make an explicit distinction between individual conceptions and interpersonal concepts and show how this distinction could be utilized to have conceptual models of a better consistency. We wish that this article could also serve as a starting point for a profound scientific discuss…
