Teaching in the age of accountability: restrained by school culture?
2015
AbstractIn this paper, we explore how ‘teaching communication’ in the classroom is connected to school culture. In the age of accountability, the outcome focus force to the forefront, a ‘blame game’ which either blames students’ achievements on the teachers and teacher education, or the students and their socio-economic background. We argue that to succeed with teaching and learning is dependent on the school culture more than the single teacher or the students’ backgrounds. School culture is understood as attitudes, communication, student focus and engagement. Teaching communication in this paper is studied as teachers’ and students’ talk about subject matter in whole-class teaching. We ex…
Researching pronunciation learning strategies: An overview and a critical look
2018
Disparate goals that learners might have in learning second or foreign language pronunciation and the scant classroom time that can be dedicated to teaching this target language subsystem dictate that learner autonomy is of vital importance in this case and adept use of pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) can be viewed as key to the development of this attribute. Surprisingly, research on these strategies is scarce, mainly focusing on the identification and classification of PLS, diverse instruments are used for data collection and the findings are inconclusive. The paper provides an overview of the available research on PLS with respect to their identification, learners’ preferences co…
Lotman’s semiotic theory of culture or Laclau’s political ontology?
2018
AbstractThe present article concentrates on the main discrepancies that should arise in the discussion between Lotman’s semiotics of culture and Laclau’s discursive theory of hegemony. Some significant – but still abstract – commonalities conceal fundamental disagreements which I would group around four topics. Firstly, Lotman’s semiotic method is at odds with Laclau’s ontological way of thinking. Secondly, although both Lotman and Laclau subscribe to the openness of signification, it is impossible to incorporate their accounts of this openness without loose ends. In order to substantiate this claim, I examine Lotman’s concept of “boundary” and Laclau’s concept of the “limit.” Thirdly, we s…
“Sealfie”, “Phoque you” and “Animism”: The Canadian Inuit Answer to the United-States Anti-sealing Activism
2018
A corpus made by online Canadian newspaper articles, coming from the archives of CBC News, Vice Canada and Huffington Post Canada, and related multimedia contents such us audio interviews, videos and especially links to images and comments shared on Twitter, allows us to reconstruct the debate on the seal hunt that involved Canadian media in 2014. In specific, we propose an interpretation of the pro-sealing discourse by Canadian Inuit and Newfoundlanders as an ironic and incisive answer to the serious United States animal rights activists discourse, explaining how these two different points of view on animals come from a different experience of the environment and a different conception of …
Does the source matter?
2018
Abstract This article provides an insight into the expression of reportative evidentiality in Spanish scientific articles published between 1799 and 1920. Central to the discussion is the presence and specificity of sources in reportative constructions. While contemporary scientific discourse prioritizes the use of specific, reportative-quotative evidentials, this is not a constant feature of articles analyzed in this study. In order to trace this historical variation, we established a classification of reportative constructions according to the specificity of the evidence they convey and we conducted both qualitative and quantitative analyses. According to our results, different specificit…
The concept of genus within the family Phytoseiidae (Acari: Parasitiformes): historical review and phylogenetic analyses of the genus Neoseiulus Hugh…
2012
Systematic studies on the family Phytoseiidae were first conducted at the beginning of the 20th century but increased greatly after the Second World War. Various classifications have been proposed based on different characters such as: dorsal, ventral, and leg chaetotaxy; the shape of ventrianal and sternal shields; the shape of the insemination apparatus (spermatheca) and spermatodactylus; the number of teeth on the movable digit of chelicera; and dorsal and ventral adenotaxy. The genus concepts developed over the last five decades can be divided into two main categories or hypotheses. The first, supported mainly by Chant and McMurtry, focuses on dorsal and ventral chaetotaxy, and the gene…
Study of J/ψ Production in Jets
2017
The production of $J/\psi$ mesons in jets is studied in the forward region of proton-proton collisions using data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The fraction of the jet transverse momentum carried by the $J/\psi$ meson, $z \equiv p_{\rm T}(J/\psi)/p_{\rm T}({\rm jet})$, is measured using jets with $p_{\rm T}({\rm jet}) > 20$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.5 < \eta({\rm jet}) < 4.0$. The observed $z$ distribution for $J/\psi$ mesons produced in $b$-hadron decays is consistent with expectations. However, the results for prompt $J/\psi$ production do not agree with predictions based on fixed-order non-relativistic QCD. This is the first measurement o…

Ajan suunnan juutalaiskuva 1932-1944
2014
Tutkimuksen tavoite on avata Isänmaallisen kansanliikkeen pää-äänenkannattajan, Ajan Suunnan, lukijoilleen välittämää juutalaiskuvaa selvittämällä minkä verran ja millaisia juutalaisia käsitteleviä kirjoituksia lehdessä ilmestyi. Ajan Suunta aloitti ilmestymisensä neljällä näytenumerolla vuoden 1932 joulukuun alusta. Se jatkoi ilmestymistä kuusi kertaa viikossa ilmestyvänä iltapäivälehtenä vuoden 1937 joulukuuhun saakka, jolloin siitä tuli päivittäin ilmestyvä aamulehti. Lehti lopetti toimintansa vuoden 1939 lopussa, jatkaen ilmestymistään heinäkuun puolenvälin jälkeen vuonna 1940. Vuoden loppuun saakka lehti ilmestyi kaksi kertaa viikossa. Seuraavan vuoden alusta Ajan Suunta ilmestyi kuute…
"Keskiluokkaistuva kansakoulunopettajisto" : Jyväskylän opettajaseminaarin opiskelijoiden kulttuurisosiaaliset taustat seminaariyhteisössä vuosina 19…
2016
Sosiaalisella taustalla tarkoitetaan tutkimuksessa opiskelijan perhetaustaan pohjautuvaa yhteiskunnallista sosiaalista statusta. Tutkimuksessa sukupuolella on tärkeä osa tarkastelunäkökulmassa, sillä seminaari oli jaettu nais- ja miesosastoon koko seminaarin toiminnan aja…
