Effect of solid storage at 15 degrees C on the subsequent motility and fertility of rabbit semen.

2005

We conducted two studies to improve preservation of rabbit semen. The objective of the first study was determine whether a glucose- and fructose-based extender with two different amounts of gelatin would solidify at 15 degrees C, and to evaluate the influence of gelatin supplementation on sperm motility parameters after storing semen up to 10 days at 15 degrees C. The fertility of rabbit semen diluted in the best gelatin-supplemented extender established in Study 1 and stored for up to 5 days was evaluated in the second study. In Study 1, semen was collected with an artificial vagina from 40 bucks. Each ejaculate was diluted to (80-100) x 10(6) spermatozoa/mL (1:3, semen/extender) at 37 deg…

Boy with pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1a caused byGNASgene mutation (deltaN377), Crouzon-like craniosynostosis, and severe trauma-induced bleeding

2009

We report on a 6-month-old boy with craniosynostosis, pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1a (PHP1A), and a GNAS gene mutation. He had synostoses of the coronal, frontal, and sagittal sutures, brachyturricephaly, and hydrocephaly. He also had congenital hypothyroidism, round face, full cheeks, shortness of limbs, mild developmental delay, and muscular hypotonia. Because of progressive hydrocephaly, the synostosis was corrected surgically but circulatory decompensation led to disseminated intravascular coagulation and cerebral infarctions. Our patient died 8 days later. Postmortem molecular studies of GNAS, the gene for guanine nucleotide-binding protein, alpha-stimulating activity polypeptide (ge…

Failures (with some successes) of assisted reproduction and gamete donation programs

2013

Although the possibilities for the treatment of infertility have been improved tremendously, not every couple will be treated successfully.Crude overall pregnancy rates of 50-65% per patient can be achieved nowadays, irrespective of the type of profertility treatment applied first.IVF only accounts for about 20% of the pregnancies achieved. Dropout is an important reason for not reaching the estimated pregnancy rate. Even after failed IVF, spontaneous pregnancies do occur. Sperm and oocyte donation (OD) offer additional chances to subfertile couples. Severity of the male factor (in sperm donation) and young donor age (in OD) are important determinants of success.Analysis of assisted reprodu…

Re-establishment of complement C6-deficient rabbit colony by cryopreserved sperm transported from abroad.

2007

Introducing rabbits as genetic materials into institutes for experimental animals from other colonies is essential for biomedical research. Currently, it is inconvenient to transport live rabbits from abroad, since they suffer from stress, are prone to accidents and must be inspected, as well as endure quarantine during the often long journey. To overcome these limitations of live animals, we transported sperm cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Rabbit sperm was collected from complement C6-deficient rabbits in Germany and then transported to Japan using a dry-shipper containing liquid nitrogen. After thawing the frozen semen and artificial insemination (AI), eleven live pups were born. Subse…

Sperm kinematic characterization of alpaca ( Vicugna pacos L.) during the reproductive season

2018

Semen analysis is a key factor when determining the fertility ability in males. South American camelids, and in particular the alpaca, have been studied very little when compared with other farm animals. The aim of this work was to perform the kinematic characterization of alpaca spermatozoa collected directly from the deferent duct by using CASA-Mot (Computer Assisted Semen Analysis for Motility) technology. Samples were obtained every three days throughout the reproductive season during two periods and with a break of seven days in the middle. During both periods, the quality of the sample's motility and kinematics increased over the first two days and then subsequently decreased. This pa…

Distributed Resource Allocation in Underlay Multicast D2D Communications

2021

Multicast device-to-device communications operating underlay with cellular networks is a spectral efficient technique for disseminating data to nearby receivers. However, due to the critical challenge of having an intelligent interference coordination between multicast groups along with the cellular network, it is necessary to judiciously perform resource allocation for the combined network. In this work, we present a framework for a joint channel and power allocation strategy to maximize the sum rate of the combined network while guaranteeing minimum rate to individual groups and cellular users. The objective function is augmented by an austerity function that penalizes excessive assignmen…

Reliable Multicast D2D Communication Over Multiple Channels in Underlay Cellular Networks

2020

Multicast device-to-device (D2D) communications operating underlay with cellular networks is a spectral efficient technique for disseminating data to the nearby receivers. However, due to critical challenges such as, mitigating mutual interference and unavailability of perfect channel state information (CSI), the resource allocation to multicast groups needs significant attention. In this work, we present a framework for joint channel assignment and power allocation strategy to maximize the sum rate of the combined network. The proposed framework allows access of multiple channels to the multicast groups, thus improving the achievable rate of the individual groups. Furthermore, fairness in …

COVID-19 Vaccine and Death: Causality Algorithm According to the WHO Eligibility Diagnosis

2021

The current challenge worldwide is the administration of anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines. Even if rarely, severe vascular adverse reactions temporally related to vaccine administration have induced diffidence in the population at large. In particular, researchers worldwide are focusing on the so-called “thrombosis and thrombocytopenia after COVID-19 vaccination”. This study aims to establish a practical workflow to define the relationship between adverse events following immunization (AEFI) and COVID-19 vaccination, following the basic framework of the World Health Organization (WHO). Post-mortem investigation plays a pivotal role to support this c…

Sengenyadance of theDigocommunity: Documentation of social context, music transcriptions and acoustic measurements of selected instruments

2015

ABSTRACTThis paper documents social and cultural aspects of Sengenya music which is practiced by Digo community (from the coast region in Kenya). Specifically the paper addresses (a) Background and Regional (Country) Context, (b) Social Context and Description of Sengenya Music, (c) Melodic transcriptions of Chivoti melodies, rhythmic transcriptions of the Six Drum Rhythms, and (d) Acoustic Measurement of selected chivoti Instruments and pitch registers of the drums used to accompany the dance. While there has been some documentation (Zake 1986, Darkwa 1991, Nyakiti 2007) of general social /cultural aspects of the Digo people (including other Coastal communities), scanty information exists …
