Inter-cycle and inter-observer variability of the antral follicle count in routine clinical practice

2017

Antral follicle count (AFC) is a reliable predictor of ovarian response to stimulation and its inter-cycle and inter-observer variability has been extensively studied on in vitro fertilization (IVF), mostly in highly selected populations within studies not originally designed for this purpose. In this retrospective cohort study, we assess the inter-cycle variation of AFC in a setting similar to that of the daily practice. We included only patients undergoing mild stimulation for intrauterine insemination (IUI). One hundred and forty-eight patients had two (62 patients, group A), three (49 patients, group B) or four (37 patients, group C) IUI cycles and AFC was measured on early follicular p…

Focus on clinical practice: angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and corona virus disease 2019: pathophysiology and clinical implications.

2020

: ACE2 receptor has a broad expression pattern in the cellular membrane and provides a protective action against the development of cardiovascular diseases. Recently, this enzyme has become of extreme interest during the pandemic infection of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019). This virus invades alveolar epithelium and cardiomyocytes using ACE2 as a transmembrane receptor. ACE2 is a counter-regulatory peptide that degrades Ang II into Ang 1-7, thereby attenuating the biological effects of the AT1 receptor. The binding between the spike protein of COVID-19 and the enzyme is crucial for the virus to enter the target cells, but whether an increase in ACE2 activity could facilitate the infect…

Inhibition of Filamentation Can Be Used To Treat Disseminated Candidiasis

2006

ABSTRACT Candida albicans remains the leading causative agent of invasive fungal infection. Although the importance of filamentation in C. albicans pathogenesis has been extensively investigated, in vivo studies to date have been unable to dissect the role of this developmental process in the establishment of infection versus the development of active disease as characterized by damage to the host leading to mortality. To address this issue, we genetically engineered a C. albicans tet-NRG1 strain in which filamentation and virulence can be modulated both in vitro and in vivo simply by the presence or absence of doxycycline (DOX): this strain enabled us, in a prior study, to demonstrate that…

Design and implementation of an augmented reality application for rock art visualization in Cova dels Cavalls (Spain)

2019

[EN] Prehistoric rock art paintings, specifically rock-shelters exposed to environmental and anthropogenic factors, are usually faint and severely damaged, being them difficult to identify and understand by visitors. Augmented Reality (AR) supplements reality with virtual information superimposed onto the real world. This sensor-based technology in smartphones/tablets can improve the paintings experience displaying the 2D digital tracings overlapped onto the real scene (rock with faint paintings). This paper presents an AR application (app) developed in Cova dels Cavalls that shows a recreation of a possible original composition full of motifs with descriptive information to improve current…

La città delle terme e il mare. Progetti di bordo per Sciacca

2010

Biologinen sosiaalisen mallina. Valintoja uuden hedelmöityshoitolain kentällä.

2007

Tarkastelen artikkelissa hedelmöityshoitoja koskevan lakiprosessin aikaista kamppailua, joka realisoitui Laiksi hedelmöityshoidoista (1237/2006). Analysoin tarkemmin lain viidettä pykälää (1237/2006, 5§) sekä siitä lakiesityksessä HE 3/2006 esitettyjä perusteluja. Pykälän mukaan lääkärin tulee valita sukusolujen luovuttajista hoitoa saavan parin osapuolia muistuttavat henkilöt, sillä lapsen tulee saada muistuttaa myös sosiaalista vanhempaansa. Analysoin lain viidennen pykälän sisältämiä vanhempien ja lapsen asemaa koskevia lausumia modaalisuusanalyyttisesti käyttäen apuna semioottista neliötä. Neliön kautta ilmennän hoitoihin osallistuvien positioiden modaalista astevaihtelua, joka osoittaa…

Stepping on invisible land: on the importance of communicating the value of soils.

2022

Soils play fundamental roles in the functioning of the Earth's ecosystems. Despite numerous initiatives to protect soils, it continues to be generally perceived as dirt or, at best, the surface we walk on. To better understand soil perception by the public, we conducted a survey with 99 participants from Poland and Brazil. We applied opportunity sampling and conducted semi-structured interviews with 40 respondents from Poland and 30 from Brazil, and 29 unstructured interviews in Brazil. Most of the respondents (53%) of the semi-structured interviews associated soil with the surface where plants grow, while 27% said that it is the ground we step on. When asked about pro-environmental campaig…

Downstream Services for Rice Crop Monitoring in Europe: From Regional to Local Scale

2017

The ERMES agromonitoring system for rice cultivations integrates EO data at different resolutions, crop models, and user-provided in situ data in a unified system, which drives two operational downstream services for rice monitoring. The first is aimed at providing information concerning the behavior of the current season at regional/rice district scale, while the second is dedicated to provide farmers with field-scale data useful to support more efficient and environmentally friendly crop practices. In this contribution, we describe the main characteristics of the system, in terms of overall architecture, technological solutions adopted, characteristics of the developed products, and funct…
