Finding an egg in a haystack: variation in chemical cue use by egg parasitoids of herbivorous insects

2023

Egg parasitoids of herbivorous insects use an interplay of short- and long-range chemical cues emitted by hosts and host plants to find eggs to parasitize. Volatile compounds that attract egg parasitoids can be identified via behavioral assays and used to manipulate parasitoid behavior in the field for biological control of herbivorous pests. However, how and when a particular cue will be used varies over the life of an individual, as well as at and below species level. Future research should expand taxonomic coverage to explore variation in chemical cue use in more natural, dynamic settings. More nuanced understanding of the variability of egg parasitoid host-finding strategies will aid in…

Application of Chemical Cues in Arthropod Pest Management for Orchards and Vineyards

2013

This chapter reviews the literature on semiochemical-parasitoid systems in perennial crops. The first part of the chapter analyses the possible effects of pheromone-based tactics on parasitoid efficacy. In both orchards and vineyards, the most successful application of synthetic sex pheromones has been their use as mating disruptants. It also discusses the possibility of using parasitoid pheromones to directly affect parasitoid behaviour. The second part of the chapter summarizes research in orchards and vineyards that has tested whether synthetic chemical cues such as herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) and host-associated volatiles (HAVs) can be used to manipulate parasitoid behavio…

Orientation of newborn mice to lactating females: Identifying biological substrates of semiochemical interest

2013

International audience; Among mammals, odor-based communication between females and infants is decisive for neonatal survival. So far, the nature of odor substrates involved in the localization of the mother and their nipples is unknown in mice. The present study aims: (1) to evaluate the specific attractive value of lactating females to newborn mice, (2) to localize the abdominal region that is most attractive to pups, and (3) to identify odor substrates that support such attraction. Results showed that 5-6-day-old mice roam preferentially over the abdomen of lactating females than the abdomen of non-lactating females. In lactating females, pups are more attracted to abdominal areas compri…

Fine Structure of Antennal Sensilla of Paysandisia archon and Electrophysiological Responses to Volatile Compounds Associated with Host Palms

2014

Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) is a serious pest of palm trees. A comprehensive knowledge of the insect olfactory system is essential for the development of efficient semiochemical-based control methods. The olfactory sensilla are located particularly on the antennae, and these can detect plant volatiles that provide important cues for the insects in the search for their host plants. To date, the fine structure of P. archon antennal sensilla studies and their role in host-plant perception have not been investigated in great detail. Using light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the antennae of both sexes of P. archon are described here in detail, acc…

Chemical ecology of Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae): intraspecific and interspecific chemical cues

2020

The chemical ecology of Heteroptera insects is determined by a wide array of chemical signals (semiochemicals) that drive their behavior at intra- and inter-specific level. Intraspecific semiochemicals are called pheromones, interspecific chemicals are named allelochemicals. In the case of stink bugs, sex-pheromones and aggregation pheromone are produced by adult males. Furthermore, phytophagous stink bugs exploit chemical cues emitted from plants to find a suitable food and oviposition source. The semiochemicals involved in this process are named kairomones and are generally formed by specific blend or key odorants emitted from host plant. The chemical ecology of the phytophagous Pentatomi…

Assessment of synthetic chemicals for disruption of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus attraction

2012

The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, Olivier (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is currently one of the most severe pests of Canary palms in urban areas of Mediterranean countries and Date palms in cultivated areas of the Middle East. RPW aggregation pheromone can be implemented for both monitoring and mass trapping, however risks of RPW "spillover" onto palms is of great concern. Aiming to discover repellent semiochemicals for safer RPW population management, we conducted electroantennographic (EAG) screenings of 17 commercially available synthetic compounds. These compounds represent three groups of plant volatiles (isoprenoids, phenyl propanoid derivatives and fatty acid deriv…

Effect of dual biotic stress on plant volatile synomones used by egg parasitoids

2014

Studies on semiochemical communication have demonstrated that broad bean plant, Vicia faba, emits volatile synomones induced by feeding and oviposition activities of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula, which recruit the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis. However plants growing in agro-ecosystems can be attacked by several herbivore species that could affect both above and belowground plant tissues with possible consequences for parasitoid recruitment. For example, broad bean plants can also be attacked by the leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus, and simultaneous attacks by the southern green stink bug and the leaf weevil can occur in agro- ecosystems. The purpose of this work was to inv…

Essential oils composition of Periploca laevigata Aiton subsp. angustifolia (Labill.) Markgraf (Apocynaceae – Periplocoideae)

2012

The essential oil of roots, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits of Periploca laevigata Aiton subsp. angustifolia (Apocynaceae) from Lampedusa Island has been obtained by hydrodistillation and its composition analysed. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 86 volatile compounds. Branches showed the higher diversity with 57 compounds followed by fruits with 33, roots with 23, flowers with 16 and leaves with six compounds, respectively. In the matrices examined three constituents, heneicosane, docosane and tricosane are in common, although with different percentages. At least the most abundant compounds found in the matrices have been reported to have several biologica…
