Schrift – Bild – Zeichen: Zum Titelkopf in der deutschen Minderheitspresse in Polen nach 1989

2012

Teaching and Learning of Geometry as a process of Objectification: conditions and obstacles to argumentation and proof. The role of natural language,…

2021

This paper examines some examples (taken from research conducted over the years) that show students’ linguistic attitudes in geometry tasks. The examples are framed within the Theory of Objectification with reference to the notion of sensuous cognition, semiotic means of objectification and levels of generality. We show the struggle students live, at higher levels of generality, in intertwining natural language, specific language and the spontaneous use of geometrical figures, bound to perception and kinaesthetic activity. Within the networking paradigm, we coordinate the Theory of Objectification and Duval’s semio-cognitive approach to frame the interplay between the ideal and the material…

Affordances and signifiers in virtual learning environment design

2016

Hungarian private linguistic landscape in South-West Slovakia

2014

In the field of Linguistic Landscape research little attention has been paid to the situations where a minoritized group gives the regional majority, such as South-‐West Slovakia where Hungarians form the majority. A clear majority of public signs, also in the region with a Hungarian majority, are only in Slovak, especially in the ‘official’, public sphere. In rural communities, signs posted by private citizens can be relatively frequent, too. In the truly non-‐ commercial private sphere, minorities have autonomy in public language choice. I present the local practices and interpretations of the private linguistic landscape in two ‘Hungarian’ villages in South-‐West Slovakia in the light…

From ‘no dogs here!’ to ‘beware of the dog!’ : restricting dog signs as a reflection of social norms

2019

Signs in public space reflect ‘normalcy’ in a community. The authors ask what restricting signs tell us about a society? In order to explore the system and variation in the ways dog signs manifest different norms and control, they compare two different data sets: dog signs in a Northern European town, Jyväskylä in Finland, and two Eastern European villages in Romania. They apply a qualitative methodology based on visual communication, geosemiotics and linguistic landscape studies. The focus of the article is on the resources of addressing and the visual semiotics of the image. The investigated communities seem to create a complementary distribution of what they regulate that is also displa…

Discorso turistico-enologico sull’aura in ‘Un’ottima annata’ di Ridley Scott

2023

This essay follows fits into an ongoing project dedicated to highlighting the rhetorical and ideological representations of food and wine in cinema It carries out a semiotic analysis of the film A good year (by Ridley Scott, with the aim of identifying the role that wine plays in it and in the touristic imaginary about it. The essay pursues this goal by facing the issue of authenticity in tour ism as posed by Culler and by reconstructing the implicit aesthetic and touristic theory on which the film may be positioned. Then, it proceeds by getting into a reconstruction of the ideologic role played by the settings and the spaces represented in it. A spatial dialectic among city and country get…

Special Issue: Animals in Law

2018

Living together with animals is silently but progressively coming to a new meaning. Humanity has been always defining itself in comparison with the animal world, looking for any difference useful at the purpose of recognizing a dominion over the world meant as a natural kingdom populated by animals. In the naturalist ontology (Descola), animals are considered as a mere mean, at disposal of mankind for the most various purposes: food, work (workhorses), entertainment (circuses, zoos), scientific experimentation, fashion (leathers and furs), public security (police and sniffer dogs), company (pets) and so on. In the present times, this state of things is undergoing a severe criticism. Risen a…
