Towards understanding nonmanuality : A semiotic treatment of signers’ head movements

This article discusses a certain type of nonmanual action, signers’ head movements, from a semiotic perspective. It presents a typology of head movements and their iconic, indexical and symbolic features based on Peircean and post-Peircean semiotics. The paper argues for the view that (i) indexical strategies are very prominent in head movements, (ii) iconic features are most evident in enacting, while non-enacting description is less common, (iii) symbolic types for tokens are infrequent, although some movements—such as nodding and shaking the head—may become more conventional or schematized, and (iv) different types of head movements involve different proportions of iconicity, indexicalit…

Lotman’s semiotic theory of culture or Laclau’s political ontology?

AbstractThe present article concentrates on the main discrepancies that should arise in the discussion between Lotman’s semiotics of culture and Laclau’s discursive theory of hegemony. Some significant – but still abstract – commonalities conceal fundamental disagreements which I would group around four topics. Firstly, Lotman’s semiotic method is at odds with Laclau’s ontological way of thinking. Secondly, although both Lotman and Laclau subscribe to the openness of signification, it is impossible to incorporate their accounts of this openness without loose ends. Tutkimus tarkastelee Helsingin yliopiston liikemerkkiä fenomenologisin tavoin ja semioottisia viestejä tulkiten. Siinä käydään läpi liikemerkin synty ja sen välittämän viestin kehitys kahden uudistuksen kautta. Työssä tarkastellaan myös liikemerkin vaikutusta organisaation yrityskuvaan ja visuaaliseen kokonaisilmeeseen. Tutkimuksessa tärkeässä roolissa on toteutetuista julkaisuista koostuva Portfolio -osuus, ja niiden kautta tehty liikemerkin roolin ja graafisen ohjeistamisen analysointi. A cross-linguistic comparison of reference across five signed languages

AbstractDo signers of different signed languages establish and maintain reference the same way? Here we compare how signers of five Western deaf signed languages coordinate fully conventionalized forms with more richly improvised semiotics to identify and talk about referents of varying agency. The five languages (based on a convenience sample) are Auslan, Irish Sign Language, Finnish Sign Language, Norwegian Sign Language, and Swedish Sign Language.
