Abstract Objective To assess the sensitivity and specificity of two self-report instruments for detection of bipolarity in a sample of Argentinean patients. Method Spanish versions of the MDQ and the BSDS were administered over four months at 11 sites in Argentina. Diagnoses were made using DSM-IV criteria and the MINI. The study sample consisted of patients diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BD) Types I, II, or NOS. BDNOS diagnoses were made using extended guidelines for bipolar spectrum symptoms. Unipolar patients were used as a control group. Of 493 patients screened, 354 completed evaluation by MDQ and MINI, and 363 by BSDS and MINI. Results Specificity of MDQ was 0.97 and BSDS was 0.81. …

Patients with chronic cryptogenic hypertransaminasemia are at high risk of developing celiac disease (CD). In fact, among the various serological disorders, CD patients at onset frequently present hypertransaminasemia. In this study, we evaluated usefulness and reliability of the new test for antitissue transglutaminase (tTG) in screening for CD as well as in estimating the prevalence of CD in a population of blood donors presenting unexplained hypertransaminasemia at donation. Objectives To explore the performance of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Distress Thermometer (DT) as a distress screening tool in cancer survivors. Sample & setting 236 Spanish adult-onset cancer survivors who visited the Fundacion Instituto Valenciano de Oncologia in Valencia, Spain, for follow-up appointments. Methods & variables Survivors completed the DT and the Brief Symptom Inventory 18 (BSI-18), which has established a cutoff score for identifying clinically significant distress. Abstract Background Polymorphisms of cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) have a significant effect on the pharmacokinetics of most tricyclic antidepressants. More than 150 alleles lead to four distinct phenotypes of drug metabolism. The phenotypes are described as ultrarapid, extensive, intermediate, and poor metabolizers. Clinical evaluation of pancreatitis-associated protein as a serum marker of hepatocellular carcinoma: Comparison with α-fetoprotein

This study evaluated the significance of serum pancreatitis-associated protein (PAP) assay, as a marker of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in comparison and combined with α-fetoprotein (AFP) assay. Sixty-five patients with HCC, 59 with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 68 asymptomatic controls (C) were studied. PAP and AFP values significantly increased from C to LC and HCC group (p < 0.0001). The area under receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the two markers was not statistically different. AbstractWe performed a pooled analysis of data on atopic disease and risk of non–Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) from 13 case-control studies, including 13,535 NHL cases and 16,388 controls. Self-reported atopic diseases diagnosed 2 years or more before NHL diagnosis (cases) or interview (controls) were analyzed. Pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were computed in two-stage random-effects or joint fixed-effects models, and adjusted for age, sex, and study center. Interleukin 3 in the treatment of chemotherapy induced thrombocytopenia.

We enrolled 19 cancer patients (11 females, 8 males) with thrombocytopenia after standard dose of chemotherapy to receive IL3 10 mg/kg/day s.c. until hematologic recovery. Therapeutic success was obtained in 69.6% of cycles; a major response in 39.3% and a minor response in 30.3% of cycles. We obtained the best results in case of platelet count <49,000/mm3. The main toxicity was a flu-like syndrome. In two cycles (6%) we registered allergic episodes with flushing and lipothymia. In the 47% of cycles evaluable for toxicity no side effect was registered.
