“Ultra-sensitive” cardiac troponins: Requirements for effective implementation in clinical practice
2018
The measurement of cardiac troponins, either cardiac troponin I or T, has become the culprit of clinical decision making in patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS), especially in those with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The leading analytical mainstays of cardiac troponin immunoassays include the limit of blank (LoB), limit of detection (LoD), functional sensitivity, the 99th percentile of a healthy reference population, along with the percentage of “ostensibly healthy” subjects displaying measurable values 50% in the general healthy population. The very recent commercialization of methods with further improved analytical sensitivity (i.e., “ultra-sensitive”…
Differences in visual information processing style between Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy with and without photosensitivity.
2021
Purpose: Recently, altered visual cortical processes i.e., lack of habituation to visual evoked potentials (VEP), has been highlighted in both photosensitive epilepsy and in a specific i.e., analytic mode of processing visual inputs. In this study we aimed at evaluating the relationship between photosensitivity (PS) and analytic style of processing visual information, in a sample of 30 patients with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy (IGE) and matched healthy controls. Methods: At our Epilepsy unit of the Sapienza University of Rome, we consecutively enrolled 15 patients with IGE with PSand matched them with 15 patients with IGE without PS and 15 Healthy Volunteers. All patients underwent EEG …
Individualized analysis of skin thermosensory thresholds and sensitivity in heat-sensitive people with multiple sclerosis
2020
We investigated whether and how multiple sclerosis (MS) alters thresholds for perceiving increases and decreases in local skin temperature, as well as the sensitivity to progressively greater temperature stimuli, amongst heat-sensitive people with MS. Eleven MS patients (5 M/6 F; 51.1 ± 8.6 y, EDSS 5.7 ± 1.9) and 11 healthy controls (CTR; 7 M/4 F; 50.3 ± 9.0 y) performed warm and cold threshold tests on a hairy skin site, on both sides of the body. They also underwent a thermosensitivity test where they rated (visual analogue scale) perceived magnitude of 4 local skin stimuli (i.e. 22, 26, 34, 38°C). Individual thresholds and slopes of linear regression for thermosensitivity were z-transfor…
The pain threshold of high-threshold mechanosensitive receptors subsequent to maximal eccentric exercise is a potential marker in the prediction of D…
2017
Background Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) refers to dull pain and discomfort in people after participating in exercise, sport or recreational physical activities. The aim of this study was to detect underlying mechanical thresholds in an experimental model of DOMS. Methods Randomised study to detect mechanical pain thresholds in a randomised order following experimentally induced DOMS of the non-dominant arm in healthy participants. Main outcome was the detection of the pressure pain threshold (PPT), secondary thresholds included mechanical detection (MDT) and pain thresholds (MPT), pain intensity, pain perceptions and the maximum isometric voluntary force (MIVF). Results Twenty volun…
Self and others in school bullying and cyberbullying : Fine-tuning a new arts-based method to study sensitive topics
2023
Despite continuous international research and prevention efforts, bullying not only persists globally but also evolves into new forms, such as cyberbullying. In this methodological article, we present a new arts-based research tool, graphic vignettes, that can extend our understanding of peer aggression and other sensitive topics by facilitating participants’ creative reflection over the roles of self and others in different problem-based situations. Each graphic vignette, designed for this study, looks like an incomplete comic strip that participants individually develop further. Flexible and open to interpretation vignettes were used in combination with more restrictive/structured vignett…
PHOTOCROSSLINKING OF DEXTRAN AND POLYASPARTAMIDE DERIVATIVES: A COMBINATION SUITABLE FOR COLON- SPECIFIC DRUG DELIVERY.
2007
The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize novel hydrogels with polysaccharide–polyaminoacid structure, able to undergo an enzymatic hydrolysis in the colon and potentially useful for treating inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Starting materials were methacrylated dextran (DEX-MA) and methacrylated α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHM). These polymers were photocrosslinked by exposure of their aqueous solutions at 313 nm without photoinitiators. Different samples, shaped as microparticles, were obtained as a function of polymer concentration and irradiation time. FT-IR analysis confirmed the occurrence of a co-crosslinking between DEX-MA and PHM in all experimental con…

This article discusses language sensitive teacher education across the curriculum. First, we briefly discuss the importance of language sensitive teaching and take a look at studies on linguistically responsive teaching and teacher education. The results of the empirical part are based on data from a questionnaire and an applied task in which student subject teachers (n=221) assessed second language learners’ writing skills and challenges of studying specific school subjects from learner’s proficiency perspective. We also report tentative results on the negotiation of language in a teaching intervention which integrates language and content. Our findings indicate that the student teachers a…
Current status and development of sanitation and wastewater treatment in the national and international context
2012
Homeostatic control of polyamine levels under long-term salt stress in Arabidopsis
2011
Salt stress has been frequently studied in its first osmotic phase. Very often, data regarding the second ionic phase is missing. It has also been suggested that Putrescine or/and Spermine could be responsible for salt resistance. In order to test this hypothesis under long-term salt stress, we obtained Arabidopsis thaliana transgenic plants harboring pRD29A::oatADC or pRD29A::GUS construction. Although Putrescine was the only polyamine significantly increased after salt acclimation in pRD29A::oatADC transgenic lines, this rendered in no advantage to this kind of stress. The higher Spermine levels found in WT and transgenic lines when compared to control conditions along with no increment o…
