Different methods for soluble salt removal tested on late-Roman cooking ware from a submarine excavation at the island of Pantelleria (Sicily, Italy)

Abstract This paper deals with the comparative evaluation of different procedures of salt extraction designed for archaeological ceramics from submarine burial environments. The experimental work was carried out on a particular type of late-Roman cooking ware finds (Pantellerian ware) found in a shipwreck near the shoreline of the Island of Pantelleria (Sicily). Hydrothermal macroscopic Fe-sepiolite from Oujda Mounts (Middle Atlas, Eastern Morocco)

The Triassic-Jurassic series in the Oujda Mounts (Middle Atlas, NE Morocco) includes two basaltic units. The whole sequence is crosscut by veins filled with Fe-sepiolite + chalcedony + calcite + smectite and mixed layer talc-saponite. Fe-sepiolite occurs as macroscopic fibres and is one of the latest mineral phases in the filling sequence of the veins. The compositional relationships and crystallographic parameters obtained on carefully selected samples of sepiolite are compared with previous data, and support the actual development of Mg-Fe substitution in this clay mineral, given the adequate hydrothermal conditions. Porous materials as delivery and protective agents for Vitamin A

The suitability of porous materials to immobilize and release under control bioactive molecules prompted us to design and study delivery systems of Vitamin A (VitA). This molecule, relevant in several physiological functions, is easily oxidized. Commercial VitA was immobilized in two different clays, montmorillonite K-10 (MMT) and sepiolite (SEP), and in MCM-41, by impregnation. Characterization of the resulting hybrid materials by XRD, FTIR and 13C and 29Si (MAS) NMR spectroscopies revealed its presence. The photo-stability tests showed decreased degradation of VitA in the clays, compared to MCM-41 and the pure VitA, while thermostability is observed until ∼100 °C. The kinetics of the rele…

Crystalline microstructure of sepiolite influenced by grinding

The crystalline microstructure of ground sepiolite has been investigated. A reference sample of sepiolite and products of its comminution by dry grinding were studied through X-ray diffraction pattern analysis, specific surface measurements by nitrogen adsorption and complementary analysis of field emission scanning electron microscope images. X-ray diffraction line broadening on vibrating dry-milled Two Crows sepiolite

A reference sample of sepiolite and products of its comminution by vibrating dry-milling have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) line-broadening analysis, complementary field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and surface area measurements. The apparent crystallite sizes determined via XRD are in agreement with observations on FESEM images. The sepiolite aggregates consist of lath-shaped agglutinations of prisms and pinacoids elongated along [001], each lath including several crystallites in that direction.
