Fat-storing cells of the rat liver synthesize and secrete C1-esterase inhibitor; modulation by cytokines.

1992

During liver fibrogenesis, fat-storing cells transform into myofibroblast-like cells and produce increasing amounts of extracellular matrix proteins. Because fat-storing cells produce α2-macroglobulin, an important serine protease inhibitor (serpin), we investigated whether fat-storing cells also synthesize C1-esterase inhibitor, another important serpin. C1-esterase inhibitor synthesis was studied in rat fatstoring cells at day 0, 3 and 7 after isolation by biosynthetic labeling, immunoprecipitation and sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Messenger RNA was examined by Northern-blot analysis. C1-esterase inhibitor gene expression and synthesis were detectable in fresh…

Setting the basis for the study of intermediate conformers of human neuroserpin by Double Electron Electron Resonance

2012

The Double Electron Electron Resonance (DEER) is an innovative technique that allows to measure the distance distribution between two spin labels within a range of 2-8 nm. This technique does not require crystalline samples, thus it is possible to determine the position of two different spin labelled domains of intrinsically flexible macromolecular systems. Our idea is to determinate the structural details of the intermediate conformers of human neuroserpin (hNS) by DEER. hNS is a protein that in the native state is folded in a metastable conformation. In particular conditions, hNS can either adopt a more stable conformation with the reactive centre loop (RCL) inserted into a β-sheet (laten…

THE SCENOGRAPHY OF SERPOTTA STUCCOES REVISITED - MATERIAL AND FORM

2015

The material that lies beneath the smooth shining surface of the stuccoes of the Serpotta family who used to work in Sicily from 1670 to 1730, has been thoroughly studied in previous papers, disclosing the deep, albeit empirical, knowledge of materials science that guided the artists in creating their masterpieces. In this work, attention is focused on the solid perspective and on the scenographic sculpture by Giacomo Serpotta, who is acknowledged as the leading exponent of the School. The study deals with some particular works of the artist, the “small-scaled plastic theatres”, so-called “teatrini”, which he made for the San Lorenzo Oratory in Palermo. On the basis of archival documents an…

Study and restoration of a stucco decorative cycle with figures, attributable to the Serpotta family

2014

The article describes the innovative restoration of a decorative figured stucco, attributed to Giacomo Serpotta or to his family, with winged putti and a female figure sitting on a triumphal chariot. The work, in the past at the former Museo Nazionale and today at the Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Abatellis, can be dated between the late seventeenth century and the beginning of eighteenth century and is a testimony of the Baroque in Palermo.

Frammento di scultura marmorea : serpente

2018

Un frammento marmoreo raffigurante un serpente viene descritto e commentato per stabilirne il possibile significato nello specifico contesto dei bagni medievali, ma anche tenendo conto della varietà di rimandi che l'iimmagine del serpente ha assunto in età classica. A marble fragment of a snake is described and briefly discussed in order to establish its significance in the specific context of the medieval baths but also considering the polysemy of the iconography in the classical period.

Giacomo Serpotta. Gli oratori di Palermo. Guida storico-artistica

2016

Ancient architecture in Provence between the Iron Age and the Imperial era: the pillars of the Château-Bas site in Vernègues

2013

The site of Château-Bas (Vernègues, Bouches-du-Rhône), famous above all for its Augustan Roman temple, has yielded a set of pillars decorated either with writhing snakes or with straight rods. As yet there are no known parallels to such pillars. The discovery of a fragment of a pillar reused in a 1st c. AD structure demonstrates that these carvings are ancient. The architectural study of the fragments and comparison with other sculptural elements from southern Gaul suggest they date approximately to the turn of the millenium. The originality of these pieces should perhaps be sought in the copying and adaptation of Italic architectural features (Attic base, Tuscan capital) to a particular fo…

Imposta di pilastro

2012
