Serratia symbiotica from the aphid Cinara cedri: a missing link from facultative to obligate insect endosymbiont.

2011

The genome sequencing of Buchnera aphidicola BCc from the aphid Cinara cedri, which is the smallest known Buchnera genome, revealed that this bacterium had lost its symbiotic role, as it was not able to synthesize tryptophan and riboflavin. Moreover, the biosynthesis of tryptophan is shared with the endosymbiont Serratia symbiotica SCc, which coexists with B. aphidicola in this aphid. The whole-genome sequencing of S. symbiotica SCc reveals an endosymbiont in a stage of genome reduction that is closer to an obligate endosymbiont, such as B. aphidicola from Acyrthosiphon pisum, than to another S. symbiotica, which is a facultative endosymbiont in this aphid, and presents much less gene decay…

Shape indices to identify regional differences in otolith morphology of comber, Serranus cabrilla (L., 1758)

2003

Summary Sagittal otoliths from the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions of Serranus cabrilla L. were compared using shape indices (form-factor, roundness, circularity, rectangularity, ellipticity and eccentricity). Regional differences were best described by form-factor, circularity and eccentricity variables. The canonical discriminant functions were built with form-factor or rectangularity indices. The results indicated slight regional variations. The G-test was the criterion more useful to identify the otolith origin in the discriminant analysis.

Pulsed-Resource Dynamics Constrain the Evolution of Predator-Prey Interactions

2011

Although temporal variability in the physical environment plays a major role in population fluctuations, little is known about how it drives the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of species interactions. We studied experimentally how extrinsic resource pulses affect evolutionary and ecological dynamics between the prey bacterium Serratia marcescens and the predatory protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. Predation increased the frequency of defensive, nonpigmented prey types, which bore competitive costs in terms of reduced maximum growth rate, most in a constant-resource environment. Furthermore, the predator densities of the pulsed-resource environment regularly fluctuated above and below …

Continuity correction of pearson’s chi-square test in 2x2 contingency tables: A mini-review on recent development

2022

The Pearson’s chi-square test represents a nonparametric test more used in Biomedicine and Social Sciences, but it introduces an error for 2 x 2 contingency tables, when a discrete probability distribution is approximated with a continuous distribution. The first author to introduce the continuity correction of Pearson’s chi-square test has been Yates F. (1934). Unfortunately, Yates’s correction may tend to overcorrect of p-value, this can implicate an overly conservative result. Therefore many authors have introduced variants Pearson’s chi-square statistic, as alternative continuity correction to Yates’s correction. The goal of this paper is to describe the most recent continuity correctio…

Midgut microbiota and host immunocompetence underlie Bacillus thuringiensis killing mechanism

2016

Bacillus thuringiensis is a widely used bacterial entomopathogen producing insecticidal toxins, some of which are expressed in insect-resistant transgenic crops. Surprisingly, the killing mechanism of B. thuringiensis remains controversial. In particular, the importance of the septicemia induced by the host midgut microbiota is still debated as a result of the lack of experimental evidence obtained without drastic manipulation of the midgut and its content. Here this key issue is addressed by RNAi-mediated silencing of an immune gene in a lepidopteran host Spodoptera littoralis, leaving the midgut microbiota unaltered. The resulting cellular immunosuppression was characterized by a reduced …

Insular stock identification of Serranus atricauda (Pisces: Serranidae) through the presence of Ceratothoa steindachne…

2004

Ceratothoa steindachneri (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) and Pentacapsula cutanea (Myxozoa: Pentacapsulidae) parasites infecting the blacktail-comber ( Serranus atricauda ) were considered suitable as biological tags for stock identification around the islands of La Palma and Gran Canaria, in the Western and Eastern areas of the Canarian archipelago, respectively. The ecological parameters of both species differed significantly between the islands. While individuals caught off La Palma showed a high degree of infection by the isopod, a single infected fish was found off Gran Canaria. Also, the myxozoans showed a high level of infection on fish from Gran Canaria but it was reported on only a single s…
