Femtosecond laser for residual refractive error correction after refractive lens exchange with multifocal intraocular lens implantation.

2008

Purpose To assess visual and refractive outcomes of femtosecond laser for residual refractive error correction after refractive lens exchange (RLE) with multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Design Prospective, nonrandomized, masked observational case series (self-controlled). Methods Fifty-three eyes of 31 consecutive patients were submitted to femtosecond laser surgery after RLE with multifocal IOL implantation. Patients showed an average manifest refractive error (D) of M , 0.200 ± 0.490; J 0 , −0.051 ± 0.532; and J 45 , −0.007 ± 0.371. Visual acuity (VA) was measured at distance and near vision before and six months after the surgery. Results At six months after surgery, mean …

Comparison of diode laser – Oral tissue interaction to different wavelengths. In vitro study of porcine periodontal pockets and oral mucosa

2020

[Background] The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of diode lasers at different wavelengths and power settings in handmade incisions in periodontal pockets and in oral mucosa of porcine tissue considering thermal damage, necrosis and the affected area of the soft tissue.

High Reliability Laser Tracking System

2004

A simple and long-life laser beam steering device has been developed. Continuous operation for low angle steering is achieved through the use of a damped resonant scanner. The system exhibits a flat bandwidth up to 100 Hz and is suited for tracking vibrating objects or in random motion around a fixed point. Applications in the field of laser tracking and beam stabilization are proposed and discussed.

Optogenetically blocking sharp wave ripple events in sleep does not interfere with the formation of stable spatial representation in the CA1 area of …

2016

During hippocampal sharp wave/ripple (SWR) events, previously occurring, sensory inputdriven neuronal firing patterns are replayed. Such replay is thought to be important for plasticity-related processes and consolidation of memory traces. It has previously been shown that the electrical stimulation-induced disruption of SWR events interferes with learning in rodents in different experimental paradigms. On the other hand, the cognitive map theory posits that the plastic changes of the firing of hippocampal place cells constitute the electrophysiological counterpart of the spatial learning, observable at the behavioral level. Therefore, we tested whether intact SWR events occurring during th…

Light-Induced Protein-Matrix Uncoupling and Protein Relaxation in Dry Samples of Trehalose-Coated MbCO at Room Temperature

2005

In humid samples of trehalose-coated carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO), thermally driven conformational relaxation takes place after photodissociation of the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule at room temperature. In such samples, because of the extreme viscosity of the external matrix, photodissociated CO cannot diffuse out of the protein and explores the whole (proximal and distal side) heme pocket, experiencing averaged protein heme pocket structures, as a result of the presence of Brownian motions. At variance, in very dry samples, a lower portion of the photodissociated CO diffuses from the distal to the proximal heme pocket side probing in nonaveraged structures. We revisit here the flash photolysi…

Dynamic laser speckle analyzed considering inhomogeneities in the biological sample

2017

Dynamic laser speckle phenomenon allows a contactless and nondestructive way to monitor biological changes that are quantified by second-order statistics applied in the images in time using a secondary matrix known as time history of the speckle pattern (THSP). To avoid being time consuming, the traditional way to build the THSP restricts the data to a line or column. Our hypothesis is that the spatial restriction of the information could compromise the results, particularly when undesirable and unexpected optical inhomogeneities occur, such as in cell culture media. It tested a spatial random approach to collect the points to form a THSP. Cells in a culture medium and in drying paint, repr…

Emotional Content in Wikipedia Articles on Negative Man-Made and Nature-Made Events

2017

Wikipedia emphasizes the objectivity of content. Yet, Wikipedia articles also deal with negative events that potentially elicit intense emotions. Undesirable outcomes (e.g., earthquakes) are known to elicit sadness, while undesirable outcomes caused by others’ actions (e.g., terrorist attacks) are known to elicit anger. Internet users’ emotional responses are likely to end up in Wikipedia articles on those events as characteristics of Internet users spill over to Wikipedia articles. Therefore, we expected that Wikipedia articles on terrorist attacks contain more anger-related and less sadness-related content than articles on earthquakes. We analyzed newly created Wikipedia articles about t…
