Uses of places and setting preferences in a French Antarctic station

2007

The various uses of space as well as the environmental preferences of wintering people were investigated during 1 year in a French Antarctic station using daily participant observation (for uses of places) and a repeated measure of the perception and evaluation of the settings. The uses of places varied according to occupational and age subgroups: The young scientists expressed a higher need for privacy and a strong investment in their working areas, whereas the technicians preferred the social leisure area (main hall). These places were used as different behavior settings and thus corresponded to flexible environments. Flexibility was a characteristic of all the preferred places. A change…

Interfacial shear strength of flax fibers in thermoset resins evaluated via tensile tests of UD composites

2012

Abstract A method of interfacial shear strength evaluation, based on the length distribution of fibers pulled out from the tensile fracture surface of an oriented flax-reinforced composite, is applied to composites with vinyl ester and acrylated epoxidized soy oil resin matrices. Two approaches for characterizing the strength of fibers with modified Weibull distribution, fiber fragmentation tests and fiber tension tests, are compared in the analysis of pull-out data. Interfacial shear strength is found to increase by a few percent when loading rate is increased from 1.33% to 8%/min.

Design and synthesis of biobased epoxy thermosets from biorenewable resources

2017

International audience; Biobased diepoxy synthons derived from isoeugenol, eugenol or resorcinol (DGE-isoEu, DGE-Eu and DGER, respectively) have been used as epoxy monomers in replacement of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Their curing with six different biobased anhydride hardeners leads to fully biobased epoxy thermosets. These materials exhibit interesting thermal and mechanical properties comparable to those obtained with conventional petrosourced DGEBA-based epoxy resins cured in similar conditions. In particular, a high Tg in the range of 90–130 °C and instantaneous moduli higher than 4.3 GPa have been recorded. These good performances are very encouraging, making these n…

Dielectric spectroscopy of novel thiol-ene/epoxy thermosets obtained from allyl-modified hyperbranched poly (ethyleneimine) and diglycidylether of bi…

2019

[EN] Dielectric Thermal Analysis (DETA) of a series of new thermoset obtained by click chemistry was performed. The new thermosets were obtained by a dual-curing process consisting in a first photochemical thiol-ene, followed by a thermal thiol-epoxy starting from an allyl-terminated hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) (HBPEI) and different proportions of diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and the corresponding stoichiometric proportions of pentaerythritol tetrakis (3-mercaptopropionate, PETMP). The dielectric behaviour was obtained experimentally supressing the conductive effects. Two sub-Tg intramolecular non-cooperative gamma and beta relaxations and an intermolecular cooperative alpha…

Cemiplimab for locally advanced and metastatic cutaneous squamous-cell carcinomas: Real-life experience from the French CAREPI study group

2021

Although cemiplimab has been approved for locally advanced (la) and metastatic (m) cutaneous squamous-cell carcinomas (CSCCs), its real-life value has not yet been demonstrated. An early-access program enrolled patients with la/mCSCCs to receive cemiplimab. Endpoints were best overall response rate (BOR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), duration of response (DOR) and safety. The 245 patients (mean age 77 years, 73% male, 49% prior systemic treatment, 24% immunocompromised, 27% Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (PS) ≥ 2) had laCSCCs (35%) or mCSCCs (65%). For the 240 recipients of ≥1 infusion(s), the BOR was 50.4% (complete, 21%

Caribbean Plate margin evolution: constraints and current problems

2021

Oceanic crust was generated at multiple spreading centres during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, forming a "proto-Caribbean" oceanic domain. During the Cretaceous, part of that crustal domain thickened into an oceanic plateau, of petrologic Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR) to Ocean Island Basalt (OIB) affinity. Simultaneously, the South and North American continental plates developed rifting and tholeiitic magmatism in the Middle America region (Venezuela and Cuba). The rifting created space for the proto-Caribbean oceanic domain. Petrological and regional correlations suggest that, beginning in the Cretaceous, the proto-Caribbean domain was involved into two main stages of subduction, referred to …

Goal-setting strategy and psychological differences in marathon runners compared by gender

2019

Prior to a marathon race, we conducted a cross sectional study with 122 male and 18 female recreational runners at the Expo. Demographic information, running experience, competition level, training details, goal and finishing times, and PODIUM questionnaire on psychological state variables were collected. Motivation, training volume, experience, and relative performance were comparable between male and female marathon runners. However, men were more ambitious and perceived higher self-confidence and fitness, although overestimated their goals ( M dif = -10.4, SD = 16.7] minutes, p < .001). Women perceived higher social support, reported higher anxiety levels, were more accurate in their est…

Goal Setting and Monetary Incentives: When Large Stakes Are Not Enough

2012

The aim of this paper is to test the effectiveness of wage-irrelevant goal setting policies in a laboratory environment. In our design, managers can assign a goal to their workers by setting a certain level of performance on the work task. We establish our theoretical conjectures by developing a model in which assigned goals act as reference points to workers’ intrinsic motivation. Consistent with our model, we find that managers set goals which are challenging but attainable for an average-ability worker. Workers respond to these goals by increasing effort, performance and by decreasing on-the-job leisure activities with respect to the no-goal setting baseline. Finally, we study the intera…
