Human settlements in the Mediterranean and the sea level changes from 12 ka to the present

2012

Understanding past sea-level change plays an important role in determining the underlying causes, and also allows the extrapolation of past sea levels to locations and epochs for which there are no instrumental data. A compilation of global sea-level estimates based on deep-sea oxygen isotope ratios at millennial-scale resolution or higher was published since ‘70. These global sea level curves do not take in account isostasy and tectonics. Observed sea level change can be reconstructed from dated fossils, coral reef terraces, speleothems, emerged and forming terraces on coastal areas, archaeological and other markers well connected with sea level. Because of the lack of coral reefs in the M…

A Multi-scalar Approach to Long-Term Dynamics, Spatial Relations and Economic Networks of Roman Secondary Settlements in Italy and the Ombrone Valley…

2019

AbstractIn Roman landscapes, the particular sites defined as secondary settlements (also known as vici/villages, minor centres, agglomérations secondaires and/or stationes/mansiones) have played an ‘intermediary’ role between the cities and other rural structures (villae/farms), linked to medium- and long-distance economic and commercial trajectories. The aim of this paper is to apply a multi-scalar approach to model their long-term spatial relationships and connectivity with the Mediterranean exchange network. On the macro-scale, we have analysed a sample of 219 reviewed sites to understand the diachronic trends and spatial dynamics of attraction/proximity to significant elements of the la…

Sanctuaries and rural settlements along the Roman road Lyon-Trier on the civitates of the Lingoni

2015

From a memory of a master on the study of the material from the sanctuary of Beire-le-Châtel "The Pâtis the Letto" as well as new studies such as material from the fanum Lux "Le Bois Giraud", the objective of this thesis is to understand the people who live along the Roman road Lyon - Trier on the civitates of the Lingoni et go on these places of worship. The material found in these sanctuaries was confronted with one of the rural settlements to distinguish local attendance and passing travelers. Finally, the study allows to emphasize the role of settlements - administrative center of the city and secondary towns - and communication routes in the genesis of Lingones’ places of worship but a…

Gentrifizierung in periurbanen Räumen Frankreichs: Am Beispiel des Umlandes von Nancy

2019

Diachronic variation in the Middle Paleolithic settlement of Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Spain)

2017

Abstract This paper compares levels IV and VIII of Abrigo de la Quebrada. The study includes knapping technique, raw material, fauna, and the spatial distribution of lithic and bone remains. Although both levels correspond to cumulative palimpsests, patterns of resource management and use of space that suggest changes in the rhythm of occupation and the functionality of the settlements can be discerned. A change in mobility patterns probably underpins the differences between these two levels of Quebrada, but assessing this hypothesis is made difficult by the lack of comparable documentation for other sites in the region.

Biogas from municipal solid waste landfills: A simplified mathematical model

2018

AbstractMunicipal solid waste (MSW) landfills now represent one of the most important issues related to the waste management cycle. Knowledge of biogas production is a key aspect for the proper exploitation of this energy source, even in the post-closure period. In the present study, a simple mathematical model was proposed for the simulation of biogas production. The model is based on first-order biodegradation kinetics and also takes into account the temperature variation in time and depth as well as landfill settlement. The model was applied to an operating landfill located in Sicily, in Italy, and the first results obtained are promising. Indeed, the results showed a good fit between me…

2500 avant notre ère : l’implantation campaniforme en France méditerranéenne

2013

Around 2 500 BC, drinking beakers with a characteristic pattern appeared in diverse areas of Europe. They are frequently associated with other kinds of materials, like specific ornaments and weapons. This set defines what is called the Bell Beaker phenomenon. In Southern France, more than 600 sites are known. In this very rich European study area, it is possible to study the nature and origin of this phenomenon, and question its poten-tial exogenous components, its modes of establishment and development, and its rela-tionship with local groups that had already settled in the South of France. Consequently, a layout similar to the Greek colonization model of the Mediterranean coast is proposed

Osservazioni sulla viabilità antica nel comprensorio di Trapani

2020

This paper is aimed to analyze, in a preliminar way, the ancient road system in a selected area of the Northern Sicily, between Segesta and Trapani. The focus are the connections between main roads (the so-called via Valeria and the hypothetical pathways) and settlements, the morphological context and the most significant toponyms from the archaeological point of view. The research is carried out by the archaeological data, contemporary and historical cartography, and it is also focused on the secondary roads.

Le site néolithique final de la Bastide Blanche (Peyrolles-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône) : Premiers résultats 2003-2004

2006

The Bastide Blanche (Peyrolles-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône) is a small settlement perched in edge of the Durance where the principal occupation is ascribable to the extreme end of the Neolithic era. Recognized in the past, it was the subject of multiple excavations but of any study nor of any specific publication. A survey campaign and a first excavation campaign programmed in 2003 and 2004 make it possible today to specify the homogeneity of the assemblies often mentioned in the scientific literature. Beyond the first description of the structures and archaeological furniture put at the day, this short note makes it possible to announce the existence of a sequence for the Rhone-Ouvèze gr…
