Does Childhood Reading Disability or Its Continuance Into Adulthood Underlie Problems in Adult-Age Psychosocial Well-Being? A Follow-Up Study

2019

This follow-up study aimed at a better understanding of the associations of reading disability (RD) with adult-age psychosocial well-being. We compared adult-age psychosocial well-being in 48 individuals (20–39 years) with documented childhood RD but without comorbid disabilities to 37 matched controls. The associations of psychosocial well-being with childhood and adult-age reading fluency were studied in the RD group, controlling for IQ, gender and unemployment. Psychosocial well-being was assessed with commonly used self-report questionnaires. No group differences were found in psychosocial well-being. In the RD group, lower adult-age reading fluency was associated with symptoms of depre…

Bayesian subcohort selection for longitudinal covariate measurements in follow‐up studies

2022

We propose an approach for the planning of longitudinal covariate measurements in follow-up studies where covariates are time-varying. We assume that the entire cohort cannot be selected for longitudinal measurements due to financial limitations, and study how a subset of the cohort should be selected optimally, in order to obtain precise estimates of covariate effects in a survival model. In our approach, the study will be designed sequentially utilizing the data collected in previous measurements of the individuals as prior information. We propose using a Bayesian optimality criterion in the subcohort selections, which is compared with simple random sampling using simulated and real follo…

Nurse-led counseling for coronary artery disease patients : A 1-year follow-up study

2021

Nurse‐led counseling and systematic follow‐up has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk factor levels. The study aim was to investigate if cardiovascular risk factor levels could be reduced in patients with coronary artery disease with a nurse‐led intervention and to report patients’ evaluations of nurse‐led counseling. The study design was a real‐life longitudinal follow‐up counseling intervention. Data were collected from November 2017 to May 2020. The nurse‐led intervention and patients’ follow‐up time was one year. Of the 78 patients recruited, 74 completed the study. The most significant findings were in the levels of total cholesterol, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol and trigly…

Cognitive and non‐cognitive factors in educational and occupational outcomes : Specific to reading disability?

2021

Low education and unemployment are common adult‐age outcomes associated with childhood RD (c‐RD). However, adult‐age cognitive and non‐cognitive factors associated with different outcomes remain unknown. We studied whether these outcomes are equally common among individuals with c‐RD and controls and whether these outcomes are related to adult‐age literacy skills or cognitive and non‐cognitive factors or their interaction with c‐RD. We examined adult participants with c‐RD (n = 48) and their matched controls (n = 37). Low education was more common among c‐RD than the controls, whereas long‐term unemployment was equally common in both groups. Moreover, adult‐age literacy skills, cognitive sk…

Long-term effects of physical training on cardiac function and structure in adolescent cross-country skiers : a 6.5-year longitudinal echocardiograph…

2004

The purpose of this 6.5-year follow-up study was to investigate the impact of training on the structure and function of the heart of young endurance athletes with the help of echocardiographic variables and maximal oxygen uptake (O2max), which indicates the capacity of maximal cardiovascular function. This study also sought to determine at which age the structural and functional changes in the heart too…

Health-related Quality of Life of Breast Cancer Survivors Attending an Exercise Intervention Study : A Five-year Follow-up

2020

Background/Aim: As the number of breast cancer survivors is increasing, their long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL)has become an important issue. The aim of the study is to follow up the HRQoL of breast cancer survivors (BCS) in a prospectiverandomized exercise intervention study and to compare HRQoL to that of the age-matched general female population. Patients and Methods: Following adjuvant treatment, 537 patients aged 35-68 and capable of exercise training were randomized to a 12-monthexercise trial. In 182 of those patients, HRQoL was measured by the generic 15D at baseline and followed up for five years.Furthermore, the HRQoL of all BCS answering the 15D at five-year follow…
