Phenotypic traits of berries and seeds of Sicilian grape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.)

2020

Abstract Grapevine is characterized by high variability in seed and berry morphology and their phenotypic traits are usually used to describe V. vinifera varieties. The goal of this study was to investigate the phenotypic diversity of berry and seed traits and the relationships between berry and seed morphological characteristics of autochthonous accessions of Sicilian germplasm. In two seasons, twenty bunches per cultivar were harvested at technological maturity. Berry weight; berry longitudinal and transversal diameters; seed number/weight per berry; and seed length, thickness, width and beak length were determined, after which the diameter ratio was calculated. Black and white cultivars …

Whole-genome resequencing of Cucurbita pepo morphotypes to discover genomic variants associated with morphology and horticulturally valuable traits

2019

[EN] Cucurbita pepo contains two cultivated subspecies, each of which encompasses four fruit-shape morphotypes (cultivar groups). The Pumpkin, Vegetable Marrow, Cocozelle, and Zucchini Groups are of subsp. pepo and the Acorn, Crookneck, Scallop, and Straightneck Groups are of subsp. ovifera. Recently, a de novo assembly of the C. pepo subsp. pepo Zucchini genome was published, providing insights into its evolution. To expand our knowledge of evolutionary processes within C. pepo and to identify variants associated with particular morphotypes, we performed whole-genome resequencing of seven of these eight C. pepo morphotypes. We report for the first time whole-genome resequencing of the four…

Chlorophyll fluorescence emission spectrum inside a leaf

2008

International audience; Chlorophyll a fluorescence can be used as an early stress indicator. Fluorescence is also connected to photosynthesis so it can be proposed for global monitoring of vegetation status from a satellite platform. Nevertheless, the correct interpretation of fluorescence requires accurate physical models. The spectral shape of the leaf fluorescence free of any re-absorption effect plays a key role in the models and is difficult to measure. We present a vegetation fluorescence emission spectrum free of re-absorption based on a combination of measurements and modelling. The suggested spectrum takes into account the photosystem I and II spectra and their relative contributio…

Modularity as a source of new morphological variation in the mandible of hybrid mice.

2012

Abstract Background Hybridization is often seen as a process dampening phenotypic differences accumulated between diverging evolutionary units. For a complex trait comprising several relatively independent modules, hybridization may however simply generate new phenotypes, by combining into a new mosaic modules inherited from each parental groups and parts intermediate with respect to the parental groups. We tested this hypothesis by studying mandible size and shape in a set of first and second generation hybrids resulting from inbred wild-derived laboratory strains documenting two subspecies of house mice, Musmusculus domesticus and Musmusculus musculus. Phenotypic variation of the mandible…

Relationship between seed morphological traits and ash and mineral distribution along the kernel using debranning in durum wheats from different geog…

2020

Debranning was applied to durum wheat to the study the relationship between kernel shape and size, and ash and mineral distribution having implications for semolina yield. To this aim four durum wheat genotypes carried out over three environments were selected to determine the morphological and yield traits as well as the distribution along the kernel of the ash, macro- (Na, K, P, Ca, and Mg), and micro-elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mo). A descendent ash gradient within the kernel reflects the decreases in the minerals that occurred during debranning. Perciasacchi with high seed weight (TKW) and greater thickness followed by Cappelli showed a more uniform distribution of ash content along t…

The evolution of sperm morphometry in pheasants

2007

7 pages; International audience; Post-copulatory sexual selection is thought to be a potent evolutionary force driving the diversification of sperm shape and function across species. In birds, insemination and fertilization are separated in time and sperm storage increases the duration of sperm-female interaction and hence the opportunity for sperm competition and cryptic female choice. We performed a comparative study of 24 pheasant species (Phasianidae, Galliformes) to establish the relative importance of sperm competition and the duration of sperm storage for the evolution of sperm morphometry (i.e. size of different sperm traits). We found that sperm size traits were negatively associat…

Testing macroecological abundance patterns:the relationship between local abundance and range size, range position and climatic suitability among Eur…

2020

Aim A fundamental question in macroecology centres around understanding the relationship between species' local abundance and their distribution in geographical and climatic space (i.e. the multi-dimensional climatic space or climatic niche). Here, we tested three macroecological hypotheses that link local abundance to the following range properties: (a) the abundance-range size relationship, (b) the abundance-range centre relationship and (c) the abundance-suitability relationship. Location Europe. Taxon Vascular plants. Methods Distribution range maps were extracted from the Chorological Database Halle to derive information on the range and niche sizes of 517 European vascular plant speci…

The Global Naturalized Alien Flora (GloNAF) database.

2019

This dataset provides the Global Naturalized Alien Flora (GloNAF) database, ver-sion 1.2. Glo NAF represents a data compendium on th e occurrence and identit y of naturalizedalien vascular plant taxa across geographic regions (e.g. countries, states, provinces, districts, islands) around the globe. The dataset includes 13,939 taxa and covers 1,029 regions (including381 islands). The dataset is based on 210 data sources. For each ta x on-b y-region combination, wepr ovide information on whether the tax on is consider ed to be naturalized in the specific region(i.e. has established self-sustaining popula tions in the wild). Non-native taxa are marked as“alien”, when it is not clear whether the…

Image Enhancement Algorithm for Optical Microstructural Characterization of Shape Memory TiNi Friction Stir Processed

2017

Abstract A key topic regarding TiNi alloys concerns the possibility to attain junctions that preserve the shape memory properties of material. Experimental tests, previously performed on TiNi sheet friction stir processed, have highlighted the need to develop an appropriate image analysis method to quantify the various phases percentages present in the characteristics zones of Friction Stir Welding process. A proper Image Processing procedure has been performed in order to quantify the amount of the martensitic phase and to detect its morphology modification along to the processed region. Particularly each micrographic image, firstly, has been denoised using the 2D Wavelet transform techniq…

Assessing the influence of fieldshaper material on magnetic pulse welded interface of Al/Cu joints

2019

Abstract Fieldshaper (FS) is a widely used component in magnetic pulse forming and welding to improve the efficiency of the process. It enables to increase the magnetic pressure experienced by the workpieces during forming and welding. Recent developments in this subject focuses to increase the life time of the fieldshaper and to improve the efficiency by introducing shape optimized designs. In this study, we compare the efficiency of four fieldshapers made of Cuprofor, Siclanic, CuBe2 and Steel. The main focus is given to the effect of material properties while the same geometry was considered for those four fieldshapers. The same welding conditions (discharge voltage of 6kV and air gap of…
