A Statistical Model of Spine Shape and Material for Population-Oriented Biomechanical Simulation

2021

In population-oriented ergonomics product design and musculoskeletal kinetics analysis, digital spine models of different shape, pose and material property are in great demand. The purpose of this study was to construct a parameterized finite element spine model with adjustable spine shape and material property. We used statistical shape model approach to learn inter-subject shape variations from 65 CT images of training subjects. Second order polynomial regression was used to model the age-dependent changes in vertebral material property derived from spatially aligned CT images. Finally, a parametric spine generator was developed to create finite element instances of different shapes and m…

Correlation of quenched structural disorder and magnetism inTiFe2Laves-phase thin films

2002

In recent bandstructure calculations for the $C14$ Laves-phase intermetallic compound ${\mathrm{TiFe}}_{2}$ two energetically nearly degenerate magnetic ground states (antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) were predicted. As a consequence of this near-degeneracy in the $C14$ stability range of ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ $(x\ensuremath{\approx}1/3)$ the magnetic properties are strongly correlated with the sublattices' occupation by Ti and Fe. We analyzed the magnetic properties of a series of thin epitaxial films with varying composition in the $C14$ stability range. The temperature- and field-dependent magnetic properties of these samples were determined by dc superc…

Multiobjective shape design in a ventilation system with a preference-driven surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm

2019

We formulate and solve a real-world shape design optimization problem of an air intake ventilation system in a tractor cabin by using a preference-based surrogate-assisted evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm. We are motivated by practical applicability and focus on two main challenges faced by practitioners in industry: 1) meaningful formulation of the optimization problem reflecting the needs of a decision maker and 2) finding a desirable solution based on a decision maker’s preferences when solving a problem with computationally expensive function evaluations. For the first challenge, we describe the procedure of modelling a component in the air intake ventilation system wi…

Transconjunctival sutureless 25-Gauge versus 20-Gauge standard vitrectomy: correlation between corneal topography and ultrasound biomicroscopy measur…

2009

Purpose: To determine the correlation between corneal shape changes and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) findings at the sclerotomy sites in conventional 20-gauge (G) pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and 25-G transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) and to compare the effectiveness of the two surgical methods. Design: Prospective, comparative, observational case series. Methods: Sixty consecutive eyes (60 patients) undergoing primary 3-port PPV. Thirty eyes (30 patients, group 20-G) were treated with 20-G standard PPV and 30 eyes (30 patients, group 25-G) with 25-G TSV. We compared healing of the sclerotomy sites in the two groups. We determined the correlation between corneal shape changes (…

Anomalous Evolution of the Near-Side Jet Peak Shape in Pb-Pb Collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

2017

The measurement of two-particle angular correlations is a powerful tool to study jet quenching in a pT region inaccessible by direct jet identification. In these measurements pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal (Δφ) differences are used to extract the shape of the near-side peak formed by particles associated with a higher pT trigger particle (1<pT,trig<8  GeV/c). A combined fit of the near-side peak and long-range correlations is applied to the data allowing the extraction of the centrality evolution of the peak shape in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76  TeV. A significant broadening of the peak in the Δη direction at low pT is found from peripheral to central collisions, which vanishes above 4…

Half-width plots, a simple tool to predict peak shape, reveal column kinetics and characterise chromatographic columns in liquid chromatography: Stat…

2013

Peak profiles in chromatography are characterised by their height, position, width and asymmetry; the two latter depend on the values of the left and right peak half-widths. Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution, the plots are parabolic, although often, the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics, eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mas…

The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mass transfer the plots will be solute dependent and should be obtained with the data for each solute eluted with mobile phases at varying composition. The half-width plots approach is a simple tool that facilitates the prediction of peak shape (width and asymmetry) with optimisation purposes reveal the interaction kinetics of solutes in different columns and characterise chromatographic columns. This work shows half-width plots for different situations in isocratic elution including the use of different flows the effect of temperature the modification of the stationary phase surface by an additive the existence of specific interactions within the column and the comparison of columns. The adaptation to gradient elution is also described. Previous knowledge on half-width plots is structured and analysed to which new results are added.Work (thermodynamics)Column characterisationmedia_common.quotation_subjectKineticsLiquid chromatographyAnalytical chemistryHalf-widthsInteraction kineticsBiochemistryAsymmetryAnalytical ChemistryPeak shapeColumn (typography)Position (vector)Mass transferPhase (matter)media_commonChromatographyElutionChemistryOrganic ChemistryGeneral MedicineModels TheoreticalKineticsPredictionChromatography LiquidJournal of Chromatography A

Electronic structure of the austenitic and martensitic state of magnetocaloric Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloy films

2013

Changes of the electronic and magnetic structure near the martensitic phase transition of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys doped with Co are investigated by experiment and theory. The nonstoichiometric Ni${}_{48}$Co${}_{5}$Mn${}_{35}$In${}_{12}$ epitaxial film undergoes a transition from a weakly magnetic martensitic phase below ${T}_{m}=350$ K to a ferromagnetic austenitic phase above ${T}_{m}$. Element-specific magnetic moments and the unoccupied density of states function is investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We find an antiparallel alignment of Mn and Ni/Co magnetic moments in both phases. The electronic structure is calculated using the SPR-KKR Green's function approach consi…

Control of the Magnetic Configuration of Ferromagnetic Nanostructures Across the Structural Phase Transition of Vanadium Dioxide

2016

We investigate the effect of the structural phase transition in VO 2 in magnetoelastically coupled heterostructures of VO 2 and Ni. Continuous and nano-patterned Ni layers were used, and we found reversible and reproducible magnetic domain switching induced by the VO 2 structural phase transition. The magnetic states of the nano-patterned ferromagnetic elements were dominated by topographic features which generated strong pinning but still allowed for a reversible switching between the states. Our measurements constitute a key step for the use of the VO 2 phase transition for ultrafast dynamical studies of the inverse mangetostrictive effect, and eventually employing the effect for ultrafas…

Life in suspension and its impact on phytoplankton morphology: an homage to Colin S. Reynolds

2020

The amazing morphological diversity of phytoplankton has to be considered an evolutionarily driven compendium of strategies to cope with the strong variability and unpredictability of the pelagic environment. Phytoplankton collects unicellular and colonial photosynthetic organisms adapted to live in apparent suspension in turbulent water masses. Turbulence represents a key driver of phytoplankton dynamics in all aquatic ecosystems and phytoplankton morphological variability is the evolutionary response of this group of photosynthetic organisms to the temporal and spatial scales of variability of turbulence. This paper reviews the existing literature on the effects exerted by turbulence on p…

Gravitational waves from galaxy clusters: a new observable effect

1998

A rich galaxy cluster showing strong resemblance with the observed ones is simulated. Cold dark matter spectrum, Gaussian statistics, flat universe, and two components -- baryonic gas plus dark matter particles -- are considered. We have calculated the gravitational-wave output during the epoch of the fully nonlinear and nonsymmetric cluster evolution. The amplitudes and frequencies of the resulting gravitational waves are estimated. Since frequencies are very small --of the order of $10^{-17} Hz$ -- a complete pulse cannot be observed during an admissible integration time; nevertheless, it is proved that these waves can produce an interesting secular effect which appears to be observable w…
