Truncated thermalization of incoherent optical waves through supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers

2013

We revisit the process of optical wave thermalization through supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers. We report theoretically and numerically a phenomenon of `truncated thermalization': The incoherent optical wave exhibits an irreversible evolution toward a Rayleigh-Jeans thermodynamic equilibrium state characterized by a compactly supported spectral shape. The theory then reveals the existence of a frequency cut-off which regularizes the ultraviolet catastrophe inherent to ensembles of classical nonlinear waves. This phenomenon sheds new light on the mechanisms underlying the formation of bounded supercontinuum spectra in photonic crystal fibers.

SDSS DR7 superclusters. Principal component analysis

We apply the principal component analysis and Spearman's correlation test to study the properties of superclusters drawn from the SDSS DR7. We analyse possible selection effects in the supercluster catalogue, study the physical and morphological properties of superclusters, find their possible subsets, and determine scaling relations for superclusters. We show that the parameters of superclusters do not correlate with their distance. The correlations between the physical and morphological properties of superclusters are strong. Absence of hyperscaling violations for phase transitions with positive specific heat exponent

Finite size scaling theory and hyperscaling are analyzed in the ensemble limit which differs from the finite size scaling limit. Different scaling limits are discussed. Hyperscaling relations are related to the identification of thermodynamics as the infinite volume limit of statistical mechanics. This identification combined with finite ensemble scaling leads to the conclusion that hyperscaling relations cannot be violated for phase transitions with strictly positive specific heat exponent. VLBI Observations of a Complete Sample of Radio Galaxies. VII. Study of the FR I Sources 3C 31, 4C 35.03, and 3C 264

We present results from global VLBI and VLA observations of three FanaroU-Riley type I radio gal- axies, 3C 31, 4C 35.03, and 3C 264, at a frequency of 5 GHz. In all three cases, we observe asymmetric parsec-scale structures consisting of a compact core and a single jet pointing in the direction of the more prominent kiloparsec jet. We interpret such alignment as evidence for the relativistic nature of FR I radio jets at parsec scales. Comparing the VLBI and VLA images of these sources, we —nd a progressive deceleration of the plasma —ow from parsec to kiloparsec scales. Optical bullets and double bullet complexes in dissipative systems

We show that optical light bullets can coexist with double bullet complexes in nonlinear dissipative systems. Coexistence occurs for a relatively large range of the system parameters, and is associated with either marginal stability or bistable existence of the two dissipative soliton species. In the case of marginal stability, spontaneous transformations of single bullets into double bullet complexes are observed. Among the bistable cases, we show how both clockwise and anticlockwise rotating double bullet complexes can be formed out of the phase-controlled interaction of two single bullets. Real-time optical spectrum analyzers operating with spectrally incoherent broadband continuous-wave light source

On the framework of coherence theory we discuss the averaged temporal intensity output provided by real-time optical Fourier transformers when the spectral line shape of the stationary source is considered. Some numerical examples are given and the deviations from perfectly monochromatic sources are pointed out.

Level structure of ^100Nb

Levels in the odd-odd nucleus ${}^{100}\mathrm{Nb}$ situated at the edge of a region of especially fast shape transitions have been calculated in the framework of the interacting boson fermion fermion model. Levels observed in decay studies can be interpreted in a spherical basis. Low-lying ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{+}$ and ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states are predicted. Their relationship with the unplaced levels populated with a $12 \ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ delay after fission is discussed.

Shape from polarization: a method for solving zenithal angle ambiguity

International audience; We report a multispectral based method that permits the evolution of shape from polarization setup applied to 3D shape estimation of transparent objects. The setup is based on a polarization imaging technique which is a recent imaging method based on the analysis of the polarization state of the light in the observed scene. Variable-radius offset surfaces find applications in various fields, such as variable brush strokes in 2D and 3D sketching and geometric modeling tools. In forensic facial reconstruction the skin surface can be inferred from a given skull by computing a variable-radius offset surface of the skull surface. Thereby, the skull is represented as a two-manifold triangle mesh and the facial soft tissue thickness is specified for each vertex of the mesh.
