Universal Design of Information Sharing Tools for Disaster Risk Reduction

2019

International audience; Disaster information sharing tools are an important aspect of disaster resilience, and it is of utmost importance that these tools are accessible and usable for as many potential users as possible. In this paper, we evaluate the accessibility of a selection of tools for crowdsourcing disaster situation information. As our evaluation shows that the selected tools are not fully accessible, we provide recommendations for mitigation, as well as highlight the importance of further research in this area.

Metric regularity and subdifferential calculus in Banach spaces

1995

In this paper we give verifiable conditions in terms of limiting Frechet subdifferentials ensuring the metric regularity of a multivalued functionF(x)=−g(x)+D. We apply our results to the study of the limiting Frechet subdifferential of a composite function defined on a Banach space.

HybridS: A Scheme for Secure Distributed Data Storage in WSNs

2008

In unattended wireless sensor networks (WSNs), data is stored locally or at designated nodes upon sensing, and users can access it on demand. This paradigm can improve energy efficiency by making use of the upcoming cheap and large flash memory, as well as system robustness. Nevertheless, the security and dependability of distributed storage are critical for the applicability of such WSNs. In this paper, we propose a secure and dependable data storage scheme by taking advantages of secret sharing and Reed-Solomon code, which has computational security and yet maintains optimal data size. The extensive analysis verifies our scheme can provide secure and dependable data storage in WSNs in the…

The differences between distributed shared memory caching and proxy caching

2000

The authors discuss the similarities in caching between the extensively studied distributed shared memory systems and the emerging proxy systems. They believe that several of the techniques used in distributed shared memory systems can be adapted and applied to proxy systems.

A framework for data integration of offshore wind farms

2013

Abstract Operation and maintenance play an important role in maximizing the yield and minimizing the downtime of wind turbines, especially offshore wind farms where access can be difficult due to harsh weather conditions for long periods. It contributes up to 25–30% to the cost of energy generation. Improved operation and maintenance (O&M) practices are likely to reduce the cost of wind energy and increase safety. In order to optimize the O&M, the importance of data exchange and knowledge sharing within the offshore wind industry must be realized. With more data available, it is possible to make better decisions, and thereby improve the recovery rates and reduce the operational costs. This …

Weight Adaptation Stability of Linear and Higher-Order Neural Units for Prediction Applications

2018

This paper is focused on weight adaptation stability analysis of static and dynamic neural units for prediction applications. The aim of this paper is to provide verifiable conditions in which the weight system is stable during sample-by-sample adaptation. The paper presents a novel approach toward stability of linear and higher-order neural units. A study of utilization of linear and higher-order neural units with the foundations on stability of the gradient descent algorithm for static and dynamic models is addressed.

Diversity of human capital attributes and diversity of remunerating systems

2008

08004 - 17 p.; Document de travail de l'IREDU 2008-02; This paper aims at comparing the respective impact of the traditional Human Capital Variables (HCV) and of competences explicitly assessed on employees' remuneration. The data are derived from an original survey conducted in five large banking companies in Portugal. Six hundred clerks were interviewed regarding their individual characteristics (age, gender, education, experience in the labour market, experience in the company). Their respective supervisors were asked to assess their competences using a list of thirty skills. Complementary models are used in this research, relating to earnings and the distribution of profit shares to emp…

The advantage of alternative tactics of prey and predators depends on the spatial pattern of prey and social interactions among predators

2011

Individual variation in behavioral strategies is ubiquitous in nature. Yet, explaining how this variation is being maintained remains a challenging task. We use a spatially-explicit individual-based simulation model to evaluate the extent to which the efficiency of an alternative spacing tactic of prey and an alternative search tactic of predators are influenced by the spatial pattern of prey, social interactions among predators (i.e., interference and information sharing) and predator density. In response to predation risk, prey individuals can either spread out or aggregate. We demonstrate that if prey is extremely clumped, spreading out may help when predators share information regarding…

Managing the flow of private information on children and parents in poverty situations : Creating a panoptic eye in interorganizational networks?

2018

In this article, we discuss how the flow of private information about children and families in poverty situations is managed in interorganizational networks that aim to combat child poverty. Although practices for sharing information and documentation between child and family social work services are highly encouraged and recommended to create supportive features for parents and children, this development often results in undesirable forms of governmentality. Interorganizational networking also creates controlling side effects because the exchange of information in networks of child and family services may wield a holistic power over families. We theorize this issue by using the Foucauldian…

Cooperation among competitors: A comparison of cost-sharing mechanisms

2016

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the consequences of using outcome-based versus ex ante-based cost-sharing mechanisms in terms of competing firms' profitability and total welfare. We consider two firms making a joint expenditure, which can positively affect firms' demand and/or unit operating costs, while competing in the final market by setting either price or quantity. We compare two outcome-based cost-sharing mechanisms, i.e., Quantity Proportional (QP) and Total Margin proportional (TM), with the more competitive Fixed Share (FS) mechanism where cost-sharing is set up on an ex ante basis. We show that outcome-based mechanisms, and even a fully collusive behavior induced by the opt…
