Flow-induced structures in magnetorheological suspensions

We have measured the yield stress of a magnetic suspension as a function of the external field. To explain the existence of this yield stress, we report a comparison between two models, one based on isolated chains of particles and the other taking into account that the structure is formed by aggregates of particles.

We have measured RBC velocity profiles for mammalian arterioles and venules from high-speed cinematographic motion pictures. Measurements were made at 320× and 400× optical magnification over an averaging time period of 10 ms. In vivo profiles are uniformly nonsymmetrical, the RBCs exhibit rotation, and they frequently deviate sidewise from the overall axial direction of motion. In general, this is more pronounced on the venous side. Since all of the profiles are time variant and the average values are synchronous with the midstream velocity, individual RBC velocities will vary about the average. Flexible magnetic filaments in a shear flow

By flexible magnetic filament model its behavior under the simultaneous action of the shear flow and the magnetic field is investigated. It is found that for magnetoelastic numbers larger as the critical value, which depends on the shear rate, the periodic regime is established. For the values of the magnetoelastic number close to the critical the periodical regime is characterized by a rather slow development of the buckling instability due to the action of magnetic torques with the subsequent stage of the fast straightening of the filament. Shear behaviour of undiluted polyisobutylenes

Some new data in shear flow are presented for two commercial polyisobutylene samples, namely Vistanex LMMH and L 100. In particular beyond a few steady state results, the tangential stress build-up after a sudden imposition of a shear rate and the decay after cessation of steady shear flow have been collected. The data are used to further test a constitutive equation already advanced by some of the authors. The comparison seems to confirm the validity of the proposed model, whose single adjustable parameter is shown to be independent of molecular weight.

The viscosity of solutions of poly(decyl methacrylate)s, PDMA, in 1-pentanol (thermodynamically poor solvent) and in toluence or isooctane (good solvents) was measured up to shear rates of 3 · 104s−1 by means of rotational viscosimeters. The observed pronounced shear thinning is for all solutions well described by the theory of Graessley, with the extension, introduced by Ito. Two parameters, resulting from the evaluation of the flow curves on the basis of the above theory, are discussed: τ0, a characteristic relaxation time of the polymer chain, is found to be in the range of ms. ηfric, a frictional parameter, independent of shear rate, amounts upto 50% of the zero-shear viscosity for the …
Rheological studies of moderately concentrated polystyrene solutions. I. A new method for the extrapolation of the zero-shear viscosity

Measurements of the viscosity coefficient η of solutions of polystyrene (Mw = 6.0 × 105 and 1.77 × 106) in trans-decalin (TD, θ solvent) and toluene (TL, good solvent) as function of shear rate (11−104 s−1), concentration (4.24−11.21 wt %), and temperature (10–50°C) are reported. As a new theoretically grounded method for the determination of the zero-shear viscosity η0 it is proposed to plot η as a function of . The intercepts of the straight lines obtained by this procedure give η0 in good agreement with directly measured values.

Abstract Concentrated dispersions of soy lecithin (60 g/L) prepared by sonication-freezing–unfreezing method show a non-newtonian behaviour and a significant rheopexy. Shear stress versus shear rate plots shows a loop hysteresis area, which have been studied in soy lecithin dispersions prepared with aqueous solutions of various electrolytes (NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and AlCl3) with concentrations in the range 10−5 to 10−2 mol/L. Also we have studied the effect of different pH on soy lecithin dispersions. A study is made of the polymerization process of polyacrylic acid, commercially known as Carbopol® 971 NF, assessing its consistency as a function of the degree of neutralization at pH values from 3 to 12, approximately. Percentage concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.4% (w/w) were studied. The gels obtained were non-Newtonian, and pseudoplastic. As concentration and pH rise, the consistency of the gels increase to a maximum, which appears between pH 6 and 8, allowing their use as vehicles in bioadhesive formulations for mucosal application.
