Heterogeneous nucleation of colloidal melts under the influence of shearing fields

Large, oriented single crystals may be obtained from shear melts of colloidal particles after nucleation at the container walls. We are here interested in the processes occurring during the initial phase of their formation. Using different microscopic and scattering techniques we here studied highly charged suspensions of spherical particles, dispersed in low salt or deionized water, in single and double wall confinement, during and after cessation of shear. While the equilibrium phase of our colloidal solids is body centred cubic, the shear induced precursors of heterogeneous nuclei consist of wall based, oriented, registered or freely sliding layers with in plane hexagonal symmetry. Assessment of Shear-Induced Structures by Real Space and Fourier Microscopy

We report preliminary measurements of the shear-induced sliding layer structure in an aqueous suspension of highly charged polystyrene spheres. Particle interaction was controlled by advanced conditioning procedures to result in fluid or body-centred cubic equilibrium structures. Shear was applied in an optical plate-plate shear cell of variable slit width. Fourier microscopy yielded complementary information to real space analysis. International audience; The recently proposed spectral shear interferometry and the well-known z-scan techniques were employed for the determination of the nonlinear refractive index n2 of CS2, toluene and fused silica. The determined n2 values by both techniques were found to be in very good agreement. In addition, the role of the repetition rate of the laser is also investigated revealing its importance for the correct determination of both the size and the sign of the nonlinearity.

A cell for measuring coefficients of diffusion and self-diffusion by tracer techniques is described. The cell consists of two Teflon disks and is of the rotational shearing type. The amount of polymer is minimal (about 0.1 ml. for both components). Labeled and unlabeled fractionated polymethacrylate of identical molecular weight distribution was used to determine diffusion coefficients in benzene and toluene. The classical optical measurement is impossible, for these solvents exhibit a refraction index very close to that of polymethacrylate. Abstract We use two-dimensional numerical simulations to study the deformation style and the formation of nappes during the shortening of basement–cover systems with half-grabens. We perform simulations with only linear and power-law viscous rheology, and also thermo-mechanical simulations with viscoelastoplastic rheology and temperature-dependent viscosities. The accumulated, area-averaged strain is calculated for the sediments, es, and for the basement, eb, to quantify the deformation style. Tonalite sill emplacement at an oblique plate boundary: northeastern margin of the Bohemian Massif

Abstract A tonalitic sill has been examined at the Variscan transpressive boundary of the Lugian and Silesian plates at the NE margin of the Bohemian Massif. A structural, petrological and geochronological study reveals that it was emplaced syn-tectonically with major ductile shearing in lower crustal rocks. Magmatic and pre-rheological critical melt percentage (RCMP) fabrics are concordant with the hanging wall structures but discordant with those of the footwall. The AMS study shows the predominance of flattening strain at the margins and plane strain fabrics in the core. A lattice-Boltzmann equation (LBE) is the discrete counterpart of a continuous kinetic model. It can be derived using a Hermite polynomial expansion for the velocity distribution function. Since LBEs are characterized by discrete, finite representations of the microscopic velocity space, the expansion must be truncated and the appropriate order of truncation depends on the hydrodynamic problem under investigation. Integral or light field imaging is an attractive approach in microscopy, as it allows to capture 3D samples in just one shot and explore them later through changing the focus on particular depth planes of interest. However, it requires a compromise between spatial and angular resolution on the 2D sensor recording the microscopic images.
